I’ve had 2 unmedicated births and and I loved it. The last 30 mins of labor was rough, I won’t lie. Especially since I had solo back labor with both of my babies. But as soon as the baby was out, I literally felt incredible. The pain was instantly gone. I can attest to having pressure on the hips and back helping a lot with the pain of contractions and also laboring on my hands and knees, and being in water were wonderfully helpful. If you want pain medication, that is TOTALLY FINE. But if you want to do it natural, you CAN DO IT. It’s 75% mental. You need to believe you can. You need to prepare. Eat well. Move lots, Rest well at night. Stretch often…walk walk walk! Labor and delivery is intense. But that sweet baby at the end is 100% worth it. And no matter what method you choose, you birthed a baby. You are a freaking warrior, no matter what. ❤️

Love that we have doctors on KZbin and not just midwives/doulas who are very biased towards natural births. I suffered from HG, and I’m finally starting to feel a bit better at 27 weeks. If it weren’t for medical intervention so far in my pregnancy, I’m certain I would have died. Ive lost over 25 pounds even with medications, and I don’t want to think about what would have happened if meds/IV’s didn’t exist. Thankfully my baby is doing well, just measuring a bit small. The past 6 months have been the most miserable of my life, and I look forward to using medical technology to make me more comfortable during my labor. More power to those who can do a natural labor, but I’m done suffering.

This! I also have HG and was on IVs till about the 6 month mark. I’m 8 months now and still vomiting a bunch. Baby us measuring small as well but I’m doing everything I can to be a good home for her. It’s been extraordinarily difficult and I’m sure I’ll have another child because I too lost so much weight and almost died as well. I’m absolutely going to get an epidural because I have suffered so much already and I’m glad these doctors (and my own doctor) don’t demonize epidurals. Some of us are just hoping to survive this.

Just to clarify something about epidurals slowing down labor - the meta-analyses mentioned often include older studies where 0.25% bupivacaine was infused into the epidural (a much stronger anesthesia solution than what is commonly used now, which is 0.0625-0.1%) which resulted in women getting motor blocks (unable to move legs or push effectively) which could slow down the 2nd stage. Many RCTs looking at duration of labor after the switch to dilute epidural solutions show much faster labor progress, probably because the epidural relaxes the muscles of the pelvis and perineum so the baby's head can descend more easily. Pain also slows down contractions (tocolysis) and pain relief can actually facilitate more frequent or effective contractions. Thanks for an excellent and informative video! :)

First baby: we had a scheduled induction but baby came early and we weren't quite prepared. I wanted an epidural, but was only 1 cm dilated. I was having terrible bone/joint pain in my hips and pelvis during contractions. Counterpressure with every contraction was a life saver. The midwife offered therapeutic rest: a shot of morphine in my thigh and atarax for sleep. I slept between contractions for several hours. I dilated much quicker than expected and it was too late for an epidural. I used nitrous oxide and it was wonderful. It relieved anxiety and I rested well between pushes. I appreciated being able to feel my contractions and where baby was without too much pain. I delivered lying on my side. I did have pain with crowning and a 1st and 2nd degree tear, but by that point the excitement of having the baby was more important. I had local anesthetic for repairs. I didn't know therapeutic rest and nitrous oxide would work so well. Sharing for anyone who's afraid of an epidural or wants pain control but it's too late for an epidural.

I was undecided right up until I was in labor. I took the pain as long as I could and then I asked for an epidural. I'm actually glad it worked out that way, as I got a good taste of contractions, but then once the epidural set in I was instantly in a better mood. Relaxed and excited instead of stressed and screaming. Plus no needles needed to numb me for the many many stitches I needed afterwards😅 thank you for explaining all the options in an unbiased way!😊

I felt weird pressure to go all natural with my first birth- which might have been self-inflicted but I was also around a lot of people who were in that mind set. And I remember my mom saying “look. If you want to go all natural, you go for it. But women, for all of time, would have been so happy to have relief in child birth. So if you want the epidural, get the epidural.” It was what I needed to hear to feel ok with my decision either way. I have had an epidural for 3 of my 3 births and loved it every time! I felt so mentally present for each birth and have felt so great physically during recovery. And I plan to go the same route with this pregnancy!

I didn't do hypnobirthing. But had 2 natural births with midwives at a birthing center. Birthed in the water both times and did different positions. 2nd baby was so painful, beyond what I experienced with my first, I couldn't help but scream through the entire birth. Both births, I hemorrhaged both times, as well as tore 3rd degree both times. Had blood clots sitting in my uterus with the 2nd birth, and midwives reached in with their bare hands to pull them out. 3rd degree tear, no meds, and had to experience that. It was excruciating, after already giving birth. Natural birth isn't the dream experience it is for everyone unfortunately and that's just the reality. Pregnant with my 3rd and last baby due to uterine and bladder prolapse. Going hospital route with epidural for this last baby, as my doctor thinks it will help me relax. Hoping so badly to have a good experience for this one.

I am always surprised by how many people I labor with that honestly have received false or poor information about their pain control options or have done no research. The lack of birthing class options due to the pandemic does make it challenging for people to prepare for labor. Also, for all the mama’s wanting an unmediated labor you really need to prepare and practice the skills you will need in labor before the time comes to have the best experience.

I gave birth a week and a half ago. No meds, no epidural, on my back and induced in the middle of it all. My water broke at 7PM, Friday, gave birth Saturday 10:50AM. It's the induced part that really rocked me, the pain was intense and long, from 5AM till 10:50 I was holding on to the side of the bed and trying not to shout as those false labor pains tore me apart. Pushing was short, I literally pushed 4 times and baby was out, they did an episiotomy and I did tear in one place. I didn't feel a thing. And - my baby was bigger(4, 4 kilograms, cca 9lbs). What I'm saying is, if you can, have your labor naturally, breathe, breathe and breathe. And don't scream! You'll lose your energy that way. The pain is there but it's not the worst. You can do this, ladies!

With my first I had an unmedicated birth, but it was very quick. It took three hours from start of active labor (which I understand as contractions during which you can't talk or walk and they're regular) to being fully dialated. Honestly even if I wanted an epidural it's likely I wouldn't have had the time to get it. But if this time labor is long (most likely going to be shorter but it never know) I'd probably get it. I can't imagine going through that for 24 hours or more like many women do. Contractions were so intense and close together, maybe that's why I progress quickly, but I can't imagine doing this more than a few hours - it's exhausting. You have to go on with an open mind... Every time.

I am 24 weeks and is worried about my second birth. My first baby was delivered via C section because she was breeched. She is going on 8 yrs now and has been diagnosed with severe autism and I am the only one that she wants taking care of her or doing anything at all for her. Never thought I would have a baby again but life teaches us that its not over after your first life ends. Cant wait for my baby boy but also worried about the situation with my autistic daughter. Fingers crossed everything goes well and quickly too. Baby is due in April 2022.

I started having horrible contractions that were 3-5 minutes apart 8 hrs after getting cytetoc( 41 weeks) I let them kick in from 9pm-3am before heading to the hospital and was barely 1 cm open when I arrived, however my blood pressure was at 160 from the pain I put myself through so I had to stay, I was then there 12 hours pushed for 4 hours until my daughter was finally born, I then lost consciousness for a bit loosing a lot of blood had a severe tear and had to stay another 2 additional days. My baby girl is now almost 2 weeks old and so perfect ❤

I’m due in December with baby 2 and planning to try to go a little longer without the epidural but ultimately will get it again because I actually really enjoyed my labor

I wish the doctors had been more transparent that an epidural is not one intervention it is a bundle of interventions, requiring a urinary catheter and fluid IV which will may mobility and birthing positions. Also, epidurals may cause blood pressure to drop requiring blood pressure meds as well as pitocin. The pediatrician sounded a bit dismissive when he said he couldn't understand why someone would choose to be in pain when an easy solution was available, while eliding all of these other factors that go into pain management decisions; it made me glad he's not my doctor.

@@amorenea5384 it was the most painful thing ever :( Lost mucus plug around 1:30 am, by 8 am I started to feeling some mild cramp like feeling that was on and off, by 10 am it was a little stronger so I decided to head over to the hospital. I arrived at the hospital at 11 AM and they checked me and said I was 7 cm dilated. I thought great three more centimeters to go I got this and I’m going to follow through it with no epidural because it shouldn’t be long now. Well I didn’t give birth until 7:57 PM I was in so much pain for so long I had no energy to push when they asked me to push and my water didn’t break so they broke it pretty close towards the end. I also got 1 tear. Once the baby was out I was happy but still in pain and I thought good I’m finally out of the woods and I’m going to feel no more pain. I was wrong. After the numbness went away, I was once again in so much pain for 4 days after birth. I could not sit, I couldn’t stand up straight, i couldn’t lay comfortably, it was very difficult. The first 3 days I got 2 to 3 hours of sleep total. I also kept peeing every five minutes and it was starting to upset me because I spent more time getting up to use the restroom then with my baby. In went in very confident and prayed with every contraction for pain to go away but my experience was not good all. I wanted another baby pretty soon but after this I’m not so sure, it was pretty traumatizing for ME. This was just my experience, other mamas have a much more positive experience. I wish all the mommas who are about to give birth the best on your delivery.

With my first baby, I held off for as long as I can managed sans epidural. Requested mine when I was already 9 cmd, and the first epidural didn’t work on me. I had a minor moment of delusion and of tried to walk out of the room and “leave the pain behind 😂” then I got a second epidural, which didn’t fully take the pain off but took the edge. I don’t know what I would have done without it since I had to push for 5 hours for my 10.5-pound baby to be born. Needless to say, this time around with my second baby, i will be opting to wait less time to get my epidural.

My epidural never worked, anesthesiologist checked it 3 times and had no idea why I was feeling my contractions. To make things worse I had a high fever during labor and a partial third degree tear. Everything was worth it at the end. I love my baby and would go through the pain again if I had to.

Thanks for this video! So helpful. Do you know if epidurals increase chances of having other interventions like forceps or vacuum assisted delivery?
@meippoliti3 жыл бұрын
Yes they do! It can delay labor and one is more likely to have interventions when getting an epidural. From labor slowing down to the doctor wanting to add Pitocin to speed up labor this can cause contractions to become even more intense.
@kimberlysnooks83112 жыл бұрын
Additionally, receiving an epidural makes it 4 times more likely that your baby will end up in a posterior facing position which may end in a C-section or an extremely painful attempt by the doctor to turn the baby internally.

My contractions were very bearable until Pitocin was introduced. My nurses and doctors were amazing and got me through a basically unmedicated birth.

My big question that I haven’t really seen answered or addressed anywhere is how is the risk of tearing affected by having to be on your back vs being able to move into different positions. I don’t want pain but I’m trying to weigh up the long term pain of a bad tear with the pain of the birth itself...
@AmyHoldaway273 жыл бұрын

@elizabethj65342 жыл бұрын
I did mine completely natural and didn’t feel him coming out at all or feel any tearing. Though I only had second degree tears. After you go through the feeling of natural, nothing compares and post partum pain is handled much easier. I got up and walked right away, healed fairly fast but nothing to compare too. I’m doing baby number too natural again in December. Preparation and dedication is key to a natural birth.
@kimberlysnooks83112 жыл бұрын
Something I didn't know about epidurals is that they paralyze some of the muscles responsible for helping turn the baby's head into the right position. If you have an epidural you're four times more likely to have a posterior facing baby. A complication which for me ended in an emergency C-section after 3.5 hours of pushing. C-sections are no joke. I ended up with an internal infection from mine and the recovery was brutal.
@AmyHoldaway272 жыл бұрын
@@kimberlysnooks8311 ooof, I did not know this. One of my legs and the foot and toes I was unable to move after the epidural and I guess I hadn’t researched them much bc I started panicking after that and went down in dilation instead of up. It wasn’t a bad choice for me, but at the same I should have probably known more about it. I had planned the pain meds to be enough, but was convinced otherwise. Things turned out well in the end, just happened in a way I didn’t expect.

I was unmedicated until 6cm but decided to get the epidural which I was fine. But the labor was traumatic and my baby heart kept dropping and they wanted to do an emergency c section but ended up doing vacuum and episiotomy. I pushed for three hours and I was in so much pain. I felt them cut my private area and stitch it up. I also tore on the side and my butt. The first three days were awful I was crying so much. Well other than postpartum has been great for me and my baby is perfect. ! Any woman that goes through birth with meds or not our rockstars. I’ve heard so many stories and before I had my son I never knew birth could be like that for so many.
@cynthx7 күн бұрын
Getting an epidural will not directly affect the chance of getting a c-section. However it leads to a cascade of other interventions that could lead to a csection. It's why c-sections are so common following epidurals. Pitocin is introduced to assist the "slowing" that the epidural causes, which causes more intense contractions, which makes mom need more pain management that can lead to complete numbing and increase the risk of pushing when your body's reflexes aren't activated and leads to a tear, and a catheter is automatically placed. You already mentioned the drop in blood pressure in mom, which leads to baby's drop in blood pressure, which DOES lead to c-section. So there is a lot to consider when it comes to epidurals that just doesn't get discussed enough. Good on you whatever you decide, but i guess i'm too much of a control freak to leave my fate in the hands of hoping the anesthesiologist not messing up or getting drugged up enough to not feel my baby get here.

My first birth and prenatal care was with a homebirth midwife. She, and the materials she provided, didn't present contractions and labor as "pain" but as a natural function of the body. Helps to de-stigmatize so that when I went into labor, I had no desire for "pain management." 15 years later I'm having my second and I'm fed up to here with the doctors and hospital staff coming at me from all sides about how I will manage. If I could have gone homebirth again, I would have. I've got in my birth plan to not even MENTION pain management to me, but remembering how short of a fuse I have during transition, the first person to say anything might just get a tirade!

It amezes me that in the US paincontrol is in such focus. You can just opt in for epidural - it blows my mind. In Hungary usually no pain medication is used during natural labour (except lidocain for the stiches at the end). I had my first baby 4 weeks ago. I asked for some pain medication and I was told you need to feel the pain to successfully deliver the baby - and that was my pain management. :'D Though I could be in any pose I felt better.

Same in Slovakia, some women get it, some hospitals offer it only on the weekdays. The US women are too sensitive. Can be done without but people don't like discomfort. African women don't have that option at all.

They are the mechanical versions of the traditional method of Opening Doors for Baby, and all use the Plastic Surgeon's technique of gradual, painless, 'skin tissue expansion', which are further explained in my KZbin video 'Avoiding tearing - Opening Doors for Baby to 10cm'. There was so much pressure I couldnt even feel contractions and I just pushed when the nurses told me. But the recovery was so much easier without an epidural though. when exactly is "too late" for epidural? Or when is the perfect timing?
@vla1793 жыл бұрын
Too late is if the baby is already in the channel coming out. Also anesthesiologist might say it's too late if your contractions are very close and you can't sit still. In order to get epidural you have to sit still and don't move. Anesthesiologist needs a time to run at least two tests to make sure the epidural needle is in the right place as well.

Or if you're going through what's called transition. It's the last stretch before you're ready to push, and you're typically in great pain and shaking. That's not a state where you can sit still enough to get the epideral safely.

Excruciating pressure/tugging caused me to scream out in pain! I heard the anes doc mumble something about "parasympathetic reaction". Could you elaborate about this phenomenon?

Does the nitric oxide have any potential effects on the baby like the IV medications? Thanks for all of your informative videos, I’m 27 weeks pregnant with my first baby and this channel makes me feel so much more prepared.

No, it doesn't.

I wish they would discuss the disadvantages of epidurals and the advantages of natural birth, rather than just saying “natural doesn’t make sense, why not be as comfortable as possible”

I agree. I had an epidural i ended up having to have a forceps delivery with my first born son, and he was born not breathing and they had to resuscitate him. I had no pain relief with my other son or daughter and both were born in less than 2 hours and no breathing problems. I was also home the same day with both.

Yeah it seemed biased because they talked about risks for everything except epidurals when there really are some risks. Not to say it’s bad enough people shouldn’t get them if they want to, but they didn’t even talk about them but talked about the risks of using morphine.

Update: baby girl came 12/14/21. We had a unmediated birth. Very fast labor, less than 5 hours! I had my first contraction at 1:52 am. She came at 6:14am. I had a great birth experience and I can’t wait to experience it again! 💕

@@lashandaallenredmon2109 What did you do if anything to prep for an unmedicated birth? I'm 37 weeks and debating on whether to try an unmedicated birth or not.

Can we just get the IV medication ? Without the epidural I’m scared to get paralyzed and also the epidural messes up your back in the long run 😣

Does scoliosis make placing the needle for the epidural more difficult?
@kionnakelly29183 жыл бұрын
Yes and make sure you notify your doctor and/or anesthesiologists before you go into labor. This way, your spine can be examined to see if an epidural is even a possibility prior to delivery so if it's not possible then you have time to choose a different method if pain management. Plus, usually makes it quicker, easier, with less trial/errors. Hope that makes sense and helps a bit

I've read and heard from some moms that epidurals cause more tearing because they are pushing more forcefully from prompting by the nurse/doctor or the body isn't as relaxed and mom isn't able to control the force that's she's using to push. Have you seen this or read about this in your field? I've also heard horror stories that epidurals don't work because they are given too late or wear off, they don't take away the pain completely, or there's a spot where the pain is still prevalent.

In the Netherlands we don't have the option for laughing gass. Why not?

I am having a VBA2C in July and planning to use Nitrous Oxide and IV pain meds if needed since epidurals apparently aren’t effective for me (neither of my 2 epidurals worked very well). Glad to have this info!

How did your birth go? I despised my iv med with my first!

Does the laughing gas cross the blood border and reach the baby like normal pain killer ?

I want a non medicated birth but I’m preparing myself for an epidural. Currently 20 weeks with twins. Not only am I high risk but there’s a good chance I’ll have to deliver via c-section. Also I’ve never had a baby and I’m not sure how I’m going to handle it
