These hermit crabs in Okinawa, Japan are living in plastic they find on the beaches because of shell over-collection. This man has started a hermit crab conservation project to help remove trash and offer them new shell homes. He even carves sweet messages on the shells for whoever may find them!

It's so sad they don't have enough variety of shells that they have to use plastic. What an act of kindness to seek them out and offer them high quality real shell homes. You're a thoughtful soul.

Sounds like a technological upgrade. Plastic will last hundreds if not thousands of years. That crab can pass on the home to many decendants as a family heirloom shell xD

@@DefinitelyWaveThat plastic cup will not offer the same protection as a shell. I can crush a cup in one hand, but I couldn't with a seashell of the same size. Also, as the cup breaks down, it introduces microplastics into the environment. Those don't break down easily or the same as organic materials.

What a great guy, and everyone who helps him. Poor hermies. I have a pet snail that came in on farmer's market greens. He was as small as a shelled pistachio nut. But now, Squirt is a big boy. I care about him, and his habitat, and he brings me joy and calm. He's so lucky his camper shell grows with him. All the best to the hermies.

This is great!! I absolutely love what he’s doing for the hermit crabs! I do, however, have some concerns, 1. Putting carvings in the shells might make some people more inclined to take them home 2. The plastic bottle caps are obviously not ideal, but it still makes a satisfactory shelter for them, so maybe it’s not super harmful to leave them on the beach for them? Either way I’m sure the crabs are much happier with their new shells and most people will know to leave the shells alone.

I love the stories like this, about people helping our smallest animals, because they know that every life is important...to the Earth, and to the animal living it. I love how quickly the crabs left their plastic homes behind for the chance to live in a beautiful shell. That made it so clear that the plastic caps really are a last resort for them, and definitely not a preferred choice.
