I do like a nice side stand. One of my earliest memories as a kid is in the back of my dads MK1 Ford escort on a warm summers day travelling along the A64 in Leeds past the city centre on the underpasses when a pre-unit T Bird came thundering past, atypical 60's biker with his hippy girlfriend on the back complete with sheepskin cut off and scarf in her hair, neither wearing helmets. I would have been five or six at the time so the helmet law had been in a couple of years by then. It wasn't the noise throaty noise of the parallel twin or smell of petrol and oil that sticks in my mind, it's the side stand with a broken spring clanging off the road. Happy days indeed.

I was just thinking, at one time girder forks were the bee's-knees, if they worked then (and with the rough roads they had back then! Mind you we've got some now haven't we?) they should still work now. Not up to GP racing standard nowadays sure but that ain't what it's for is it? 😁

Great video Craig, that stand looks the Mutt`s Nuts, i`m curious how do you plan to tidy up the pitted surface on the girder forks, i was wondering would lead loading be a more `vintage` kind of repair ? When i restored my 1966 MGB Roadster 20 years ago i only used lead on the bodywork and not body filler as i wanted a more traditional repair as it would have been done `back in the day`, you rekon lead loading would work on these forks and give them a more durable long term repair ? Cheers mate, keep warm.
@digschopper93213 жыл бұрын
J B WELD fills pits well and sands smooth.
@REKLESSWOLVES13 жыл бұрын
@@digschopper9321 still a filler of sorts though isn`t it mate, lead loading is a way more permanent solid way of bringing the forks back to looking original, once that leads on there it`ll never crack, chip or flake off, never had an experience with JB weld so i wouldn`t know how well it would hold up long term, whereas i know lead loading done on cars back in the day, 40`s, 50s, 60`s etc is as good today as it was then.
@digschopper93213 жыл бұрын
@@REKLESSWOLVES1 , ive never used lead. I dont think itll hold up if powdercoating, not sure. But on those girders, if youll be painting them, JBWeld is a good filler for small pitting, or the odd grinding mark. I only use it on hard parts, not sheet metal.

It's really looking fine down there on the floor, and the riding position seems ideal. Hell, I'd take it as-is with maybe just a bit of that "wax heating" metal treatment you'd shown earlier. Speaking of "down there on the floor", when you said "Going down..." when lowering the lift, I kind of flashed on the theme music for that old '70s BBC TV series, "Are You Being Served" (see: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYLSaKhsmayHm7M).

I am sorry Craig, but I am not happy, and will have to postpone dinner. I don't like the fact you have to get off the bike to engage the side stand. I think you need to make a bracket that allows engagement while still sitting on the bike. Also, not too happy with the angle. I think it needs to come a degree or two to the front of the bike, otherwise I have visions of the bike rolling forward a tad, and the side stand disengaging. Sorry, but just my OCD kicking in !

Any motorcycle used only on the street is really only good for trundling along. If you want to go racing sure they are more than capable of just that but get caught doing that on the street and you will ruin your finacial and legal position in life. These vintage machines are cool, and thats a big part of being a motorbike rider isnt it? Tracks are there for aggressive riding but beware...your first time at the track you are going to learn just how pathetic your racing skills really are. So how stupid is it for you to ride like that on the street?
