Video Transmitters might be the most boring tools we have in our kit, but essential when handling clients and directors on set.
Featuring the Hollyland Mars 400S Pro, I'll show you the best practices when using transmitters, as well share the 2 COMMON MISTAKES you might have fallen into when testing your transmitter.

9:36 Cable quality does not affect latency! Signals travel through the cable at 60-85% light-speed, the difference in speeds the signal travels for a crappy cable and a high quality cable are negligible. I did the math, and for a 1 meter cable, the difference in speed between 0.6C and 0.85C is 1.64 nanoseconds, that's 0.000001635 ms. Immeasurable for this purpose. Also, both HDMI and SDI are simple serials streams, they don't retransmit lost packets like Ethernet, which is the only way a bad cable could actually affect the latency.

Keep in mind that the only cables that have an impact on latency are HDMI cables with active converters - like those that convert the data stream to fibre for a longer distance, then back to HDMI. Ordinary cables exhibit NO latency. Any processing that needs buffers, creates latency. Don;t forget that plenty of cameras and monitors are quite happy with SDI being split with a passive T-BNC. It messes up the impedance, but my monitors are very happy with the mismatch and there is no added latency as no electronics!

A couple of weeks ago we live streamed a concert on KZbin using three wireless devices from holly land on two camera’s. While setting up we tested the transmitters on set, walking as far as 20 meters from the recoveries and everything was working just fine. 5 minutes in to the show two transmitors started glitching and the video output was not useful! Fortunately we had more cameras set up so this only was a minor issue as we could keep the live stream with 4 more cameras but this was very unfortunate that it happened after running all test. We concluded that in a fully crowded venue with people standing this device might cut off. One transmitor that was on stage keept working the whole show as it was above crowd.

At 10:31, I wonder if you introduced a little bit of apparent latency, lets call it, by filming at 1/50, the iphones have a refresh rate of 60hz, so maybe try again at 1/60? Plus, I see the atomos is at 23.98, is the camera filming at 25? Just some thoughts...

I love my 400S but you are so right, the upgrade in signal strength from 400s to 400s pro isn't that big and overall its not that much different other then the horizontal design. But honestly this could have been a huge upgrade if they included loop through on this device to really make it a step up from the 400s. Which is funny because in my setups I personally prefer the vertical setup vs the horizontal. Also not a huge fan of the new C1 but hopefully they include loop through in their next unit! Love your videos, I learned a lot from this one. Thank you.

Great comprehensive review. Thank you! Question/thought. I'm currently using a $14 5V powered, OREI HDMI splitter to send my camera signal to both an Atomos recorder, and a large TV in video village. I power the splitter via a 5V USB out from the V-mount on my rig. The splitter introduces very low latency, and the signal gets to both the Atomos and the TV at the same time. So my question is, if I swapped out the TV for a MARS 400S Pro system, would the 1st AC have low enough latency to pull focus effectively?
@toddpeterson5904
@toddpeterson5904 2 жыл бұрын
Mistake: the camera's LCD is not zero latency. It still must transform the camera's sensor output (via the camera's processor) into a video signal to send to the LCD. Thus, your "camera latency" probably does not exist. Think about it this way: the rolling shutter on the A7S III takes 9ms to scan the sensor at 25fps. That leaves 71ms before being output to the camera's LCD. The image needs to be processed (debayered and apply any adjustments). This is difficult to measure, but we can be sure that it is very fast. Next in the chain is the transform, likely to an HDMI signal, which is then sent by the LCD and displayed, probably similar to the SmallHD external display , around 40 ms. Thus the camera latency is overstated

Very cool review, subbed on all my channels. Two little things tho: Speaking about common mistakes, it seems that you were testing latency in 60fps mode, altho some Sony cameras seem to be able to output 60fps hdmi in 24fps mode, most shooting scenarios will leave you with a 1080p24/30 feed over hdmi. From what I've seen, this adds a considerable amount of latency to those hollyland transmitters and it would be worth comparing. The other one is the video quality in different modes, any codec no matter how crappy it is will end up looking pretty decent in a matter of seconds on a perfectly still shot without that many details, it's be good to benchmark it with a scene with movement or a tree and its leaves in the wind for example.

I've gotta add, the mount at the bottom is awful. I've had two, they are never fully snug. There is always play, I even sent one in and they didn't fix it. They also should have added holes for the shoe mount so you can use an allen wrench for more torque because the surface area is so small it makes tightening a pain. Major design flaw for professional environments.

Good video, good explanation of the latency! But, the same problem with every other KZbin review... You only test HDMI output. I cannot find one freaking video who tests the SDI latency....

Your reviews are awesome!! One question though, is it possible to output SDI and HDMI at the same time?? I can't find information about that anywhere, thanks!

great video but i have got question even before the nerd alert part, 7:26 talking about the latency why do I need to connect my camera to a monitor first then to the TX? Am i not supposed to connect my camera to the TX first, and then from RX to any monitor?

Incorrect information abounds..... 1 - Display latency on a monitor is decoupled from the latency it's pass-through introduces. A monitor might have latency due to LUT implementation, the actual switching of LCD crystals, image scaling, and so on. These will not affect how it passes through an In to Out HMDI signal. The pass-through knows nothing of the monitor's display speed struggles. In fact, most pass-throughs have NO latency. They are simply a hard wired split, with no electronics at all to introduce any possible delay. 2 - HDMI ports can be slower or faster than SDI ports. It depends what's behind the port, which is to say it depends what camera model you are using. There is nothing inherently slower about HDMI - which you can prove by hooking up a game console to a fast gaming monitor. The result will be virtually no latency. 3 - "HDMI cable quality" has no effect on latency. This is pure nonsense. A bad cable might introduce snow. Anything better than "bad/failed" will be perfect, and identical in all ways, with no latency at all added by the cable, at any length below 14 feet. I say no latency, but really it's something like 0.00001 milliseconds - but in terms of human perception, that's still zero. I've designed video devices, I really know what I am talking about.

Hey Robert thanks for the info, before I answer, Keep in mind I'm talking about monitors used in film productions, not sure which Video Devices you design as I'm sure they're not all designed the same.... Also note that this episode was not meant to be a scientific class for MIT students, it's meant to meet halfway and try to explain things in the most simplified way possible, which sometimes forces me to use a creative license and slightly distort some facts to keep things simple.. With that said: 1- As you said, "A monitor might have latency due to LUT implementation" and this is one of the scenarios that cause that latency I'm talking about here. All production monitors or monitor recorders will have to do some processing in 99% of the cases. Things like applying luts, displaying timecode, waveform, false colors, etc... All of which will cause this latency. There might be a port that's decoupled from all this and just bridges the signal, but I don't think that's the case, especially in RAW signals like ProRes RAW coming out of mirrorless cameras, they are not even video signals, they're data signals that need to be transformed to video inside the Atomos Recorder. 2- "It depends what's behind the port" and that's exactly what I wanted to say, but had to simplify based on field experience and best practices on set. You said: "There is nothing inherently slower about HDMI", again I go back to what kind of monitor are we talking about, TV's? Phone screens? Or production monitors? So far, and for so many reasons I'm not really interested in, and in most cases, when using HDMI on a shoot, there would be more latency than when using HDMI. So it became a common practice to avoid HDMIs 3- As you said: "with no latency at all added by the cable, at any length below 14 feet.".. length here is the point I didn't mention , again to keep things simple. Length of an HDMI will affect latency, you said it's negligible, but at what length it stays negligible and unpercievable? SDI/BNC can run for miles without the same effect that happens with HDMI. HDMI get thicker and resistance i the cable at those length will come into play. Let me know we agree on the above. Again.. I'm trying to simplify things to everyone, especially that we're not all of us design video devices ;) we just use them

Thanks for your comment... funny enough I realized that right before publishing the video. Totally missed the fact that temporal compression comes in play in transmissions. I ended up just uploading it honestly without reshooting that test. Glad to find someone that notices such very intricate details. Thanks again

Question I have is can the receiver be used on its own going out from an SDI monitor and into the Hollyland receiver and have the signal sent to a iPad via the app? Also do you know can a Quad Splitter be used to connect more than one monitor?

Hi! I have an Atem Production Studio 4k and also 2 MARS 300 and a MARS 400S Pro, but I can't get this last one to transmit at 59.94 fps. Although the camera is 59.94, it reports 60 fps on its screen and that's why my ATem can't synchronize and have the video signal. How do I force the Mars 400 S pro to transmit what it gets: 59.94? Grateful!
