@ThePorpoisepower7 жыл бұрын
Actually she date raped him (if you pay attention, he's trying to get away "what's in this drink").
@kungfusansu7 жыл бұрын
Wrong. Thats a stock joke from the time and the song is about consent and exercising sexual agency. Source:It’s time to bring an end to the Rape Anthem Masquerading As Christmas Carol Hi there! Former English nerd/teacher here. Also a big fan of jazz of the 30s and 40s. So. Here’s the thing. Given a cursory glance and applying today’s worldview to the song, yes, you’re right, it absolutely *sounds* like a rape anthem. BUT! Let’s look closer! “Hey what’s in this drink” was a stock joke at the time, and the punchline was invariably that there’s actually pretty much nothing in the drink, not even a significant amount of alcohol. See, this woman is staying late, unchaperoned, at a dude’s house. In the 1940’s, that’s the kind of thing Good Girls aren’t supposed to do - and she wants people to think she’s a good girl. The woman in the song says outright, multiple times, that what other people will think of her staying is what she’s really concerned about: “the neighbors might think,” “my maiden aunt’s mind is vicious,” “there’s bound to be talk tomorrow.” But she’s having a really good time, and she wants to stay, and so she is excusing her uncharacteristically bold behavior (either to the guy or to herself) by blaming it on the drink - unaware that the drink is actually really weak, maybe not even alcoholic at all. That’s the joke. That is the standard joke that’s going on when a woman in media from the early-to-mid 20th century says “hey, what’s in this drink?” It is not a joke about how she’s drunk and about to be raped. It’s a joke about how she’s perfectly sober and about to have awesome consensual sex and use the drink for plausible deniability because she’s living in a society where women aren’t supposed to have sexual agency. Basically, the song only makes sense in the context of a society in which women are expected to reject men’s advances whether they actually want to or not, and therefore it’s normal and expected for a lady’s gentleman companion to pressure her despite her protests, because he knows she would have to say that whether or not she meant it, and if she really wants to stay she won’t be able to justify doing so unless he offers her an excuse other than “I’m staying because I want to.” (That’s the main theme of the man’s lines in the song, suggesting excuses she can use when people ask later why she spent the night at his house: it was so cold out, there were no cabs available, he simply insisted because he was concerned about my safety in such awful weather, it was perfectly innocent and definitely not about sex at all!) In this particular case, he’s pretty clearly right, because the woman has a voice, and she’s using it to give all the culturally-understood signals that she actually does want to stay but can’t say so. She states explicitly that she’s resisting because she’s supposed to, not because she wants to: “I ought to say no no no…” She states explicitly that she’s just putting up a token resistance so she’ll be able to claim later that she did what’s expected of a decent woman in this situation: “at least I’m gonna say that I tried.” And at the end of the song they’re singing together, in harmony, because they’re both on the same page and they have been all along. So it’s not actually a song about rape - in fact it’s a song about a woman finding a way to exercise sexual agency in a patriarchal society designed to stop her from doing so. But it’s also, at the same time, one of the best illustrations of rape culture that pop culture has ever produced. It’s a song about a society where women aren’t allowed to say yes…which happens to mean it’s also a society where women don’t have a clear and unambiguous way to say no.

As noted in the article below: Taken in context it's more about allowing the woman plausible deniability because the social mores of the time didn't allow women to take ownership of their sexuality. Notice, in eve ry version the woman isn't really trying hard to leave.

@FerretJohn9 жыл бұрын
+iviDivi North Absolutely I judge people by their odd fashion choices, every time I see a wannabe gangsta wearing his pants around around his hips, I have to resist the urge to tall him to pull up his damn pants. If you claim to have never judged people by their clothing choices then I will tell you that you are lying. Art, like Beauty, is in the eye of the Beholder, one mans trash is anothers treasure. The late great Andy Kaufman has been described as the Father of Modern Performance Art, a visionary ahead of his time, others have described him as an obnoxious jerk. The debate still goes on. Besides being a lover of quality music I am also an avid long-time fan of professional wrestling, and yes I am quite aware of how many people refuse to see the art in it and just see it as childish trash (but that's a different conversation). Modern wrestlers, especially in the WWE, require gimmicks, an individual over-the-top style, a hook to draw the fans in. I've seen a lot of great gimmicks over the years and I've seen a lot of bad ones, and I've seen a lot of very talented wrestlers ruined because their gimmick overwhelmed their talent. The fans couldn't see the acrobats, just the clowns. Gaga is the same way, phenomenally talented singer, but that talent can be so overshadowed by stage production, by the foot-high shoes and the bubble-dresses and the huge stage productions that many fans only see the side-show and not the main event.
@GoxBoy9 жыл бұрын

Okay so they DID make this song more acceptable by genderswapping the lyrics. Cool. I just wanted to make sure I was hearing this right. I Love it and it's adorable this way!
@Sam-vy8ye3 жыл бұрын
People seem to forget (or ignore) that the original song was 'genderswapped' in Neptune's Daughter, the 1940s movie it debuted in. It is first sung with the 'traditional' roles with Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban, and later with the roles reversed with Red Skelton and Betty Garrett. You can find the clip on youtube from the movie with all four singing it. So to say the least it wasn't as problematic as people claimed. From it's inception there wasn't necessarily a "male" and "female" part.

And she's wearing two different (but identical looking) shoes. If you look closely at the beginning or 0:41, one shoe has a leather sole and rubber tip on the end, but at 1:41 the other has a leather sole and rubber insert across the front part, plus a shape that isn't on the sole at 0:41.

The original 1940s movie also had a horny woman trying to stop the guy from leaving. That was its original context
@slvrangel22 Жыл бұрын
Or it shows that our generation is so distorted and screwed up, we have to twist everything into something it isn't. It's not actually about anyone manipulating anyone. If it is, then how screwed up is this comment? Fixes the problem of the woman being manipulated by having the man be manipulated? The warped interpretation of this song makes me shake my head at how so many people are sheep and unable to think for themselves. Listen to the lyrics... she wants to stay! He's not manipulating her. He's trying to persuade her sure.. but she not to do anything she doesn't already want to do. She's concerned about what others will think and about worrying others if she doesn't get home soon. But she wants to stay!!! This is written at a time where that would have been frowned on.

@hotwax93765 жыл бұрын
"Baby It's Cold Outside" first appeared in the 1949 film Neptune's Daughter, were it was performed twice: once with the traditional roles, and later with the roles reversed (the guy leaving and the girl trying to make him stay.) That alone should prove that the song was simply intended to be about flirting and not rape.

If you look at the original, in "Neptune's Daughter," the woman is much more physically aggressive when she sings it!

This proves that it’s all about body language and subtext. If Gaga had a menacing look and Joseph had a concerned look people would be analyzing the words as horrific and SA. But this version is almost universally loved… because CONTEXT MATTERS
