Good points, Mattheww. I would like to add one more caution, having lost a Mini 2 over a fast-moving river recently. We had just had heavy rains, and a river in our local nature preserve was running very high. I wanted to capture this dynamic event from the Mini 2. I launched the aircraft, and immediately found it difficult to control. The water was streaked with a naturally-occurring foam, and I think the moving pattern of the foam confused the downward sensors. No matter what I tried with the sticks, the Mini 2 kept driftng downriver and away from me. It was between 2 and 3 m above the river throughout. I tried rotating the aircraft to come home, or at least to get over the bank of the river, but it would not respond. Continuing to drift backwards, it struck an overhanging branch and fell into the river which is too deep to wade in at that point. So I would recommend to my fellow pilots to avoid flying over fast-moving rivers, especially if there is a pattern on the surface. Thankfully I was able to use my DJI Care flyaway coverage and was able to replace the aircraft for much less than buying a new one!

Matthew, thanks for these helpfull (and money saving!) tips. When I fly my Dji mini 3 over the water with the gimbal (a little) down , I always zoom in a little bit. That gives the impression of flying very close to the water, without the risk of a wet Dji drone. Again thanks for all your videos!

Hello Mathew, I really appreciate your videos. Full of information, quick and to the point. So thank you. I am in Canada so we have lots of water. I had a mini two for 18 months. I flew about 80% of the time over the lake. The longest distance I did was 3.3 km. All over water and quite high up as I was travelling to a destination to take pictures. It still had almost 20% battery upon return. One item I would suggest to be concerned about when flying over water, is human error. A few weeks ago I was trying to track a boat flying sideways. That of course takes a little more concentration and there was lots going on the screen. I guess I was pulling my left toggle backwards a little more than I should have because the drone went down, down, and disappeared into the water. I have ordered a M3P and expect to pick it up tomorrow.

Thank you for creating this highly informative video on flying over water. I recently acquired a DJI Mini 3 (not the Pro version yet, although I’m contemplating upgrading to the DJI Mini 4 Pro in the future). I plan to fly my drone from the end of a pier at a local beach and experiment with flying over water for the first time. Your video has been incredibly helpful in preparing me for this experience, providing valuable insights on what to do and what to avoid. Once again, thank you!

Hey Mattheww - been shooting over water a lot. But I shoot very close to surfers and standup paddlers. I'm usually only about 20-30 meters away on shore. Interestingly so far I'd been doing all my shooting on a Mini (original) and Mini 2 - got the Mini 3 a few months back and finally took it to Hawaii last week. First day with it today and was amused to discover that flying 1-2 feet above the water was confusing the shit out of it and it kept stopping. Didn't take long to figure out that I could turn off obstacle avoidance - however one very common shot I do is a low level quickshot circle of a person stand-up-paddling. I Can of course manually fly the orbit but sometimes in the interests of speed I just bang out a quickshot. This worked fine on the Mini/Mini 2 - (if the person was paddling too quickly it might get confused but in that case I'll just fly it manualy) But on the Mini 3 it doesn't work AT ALL. Low level quickshots are damn near impossible - presumably because collision detection cannot be turned off during a quickshot. Is there any way to do this? For example could I use SPORT mode in a quickshot to "disable" collision detection? (I shoot everything in CINE mode normally) - I figured you might know. (the shot I'm talking about is a very low orbit - about 3-4 feet off the water's surface) maybe about 5-10 feet from the subject (person standing on a standup board paddling slowly)

Thanks for the tips. I've been working on getting some cool shots of the cruise ship which stops by every Tuesday here in Hawaii on its way out of the harbor in the evening, which involves flying over the ocean from up on a cliff overlooking the bay due to the local airport (and I have to stay pretty low, as airplanes on approach pass nearly eye-level from the take-off point over the area). It's a bit nerve-wracking, but I'm slowly building up my confidence flying out a little further (while always keeping an eye on that battery!).

@@TheDroneCreative Agreed Mattheww I rely on it when picking a time to moor when out in the barge, trying to moor in heavy winds is a bit of a nightmare when your trying to haul in a 25t boat on your tod. Can try and time the mooring to coincide with the least amount of wind to make my life a bit easier. It’s a shame you cant get the drone to home in on the remote control when out on the boat, cant really hover the boat to designate and update the landing spot, all tricky when you cant let go let go of the tiller when steering and all the other little things that need to be done.

Check your specs as to when the down facing sensors kicks in. That is the point when your drone is looking for patterns of the surface below and it uses that to detect the height rather than using GPS. Over water then this pattern recognition is difficult to detect as the surface is constantly changing and thus there is often a difficulty to get an accurate height measurement. That is why you see the drone bobbing about as you get lower as the drone is trying to detect patterns in the ground (the sea) and keep itself level. My dji mini SE specs indicate that the sensors kick in at around 10m. Above that height you are using GPS so its a flat movement, below that, then you are starting to use the downfacing sensors to get the height and you can then get bobbing going over water (you can get the same over snow as well). ps if you fly too low and it bobs about at the wrong point then you can turn your drone into a submarine . . .

Very interesting advices, but have a question, no other channel seems to be able to reply, not even italian: i have an electric jetboard i usually use it during the early morning with calm water an zero wind (jetsurfing is for relax, totally different from classic surf), i'd need a drone capable of atofollowing me for 15 minutes more or less, maybe leaving the controller at the shore temporarily (at early morning i usually have nobody who can help with this). So do you think this could be possible, i mean autofollow on the water without sinking, and in case which model could i consider? Thank you

Really useful tips. I'd like to know what filters you'd recommend for the dji mini 3 that are currently available?

Currently been testing the Freewell and Skyreat ones. Both are good. Personally I would go with Freewell.

Great video. Yes, no DJI drones are waterproof. I saw a "wetsuit" for the Mini 2 to make it waterproof to fly in snow and rain. I am not sure it is 100% safe, though, because water will still go through the motors, so I am a bit skeptical about it. I had a scary experience with my Mini 2. I tried to fly into a low road underpass where a river flows and the downward sensors would keep pushing it up. If I had gone into the tunel, it would likely have crashed into the ceiling, which was pretty low off the water. Very tricky those sensors! I wish you could turn them off.

Yeah. I have noticed even with the obstacle avoidance off on the Mini 3, it still will rise up if the downward sensors detect something. Would be great to be able to turn them off.

@@TheDroneCreative The only way I have found to do that is actually disconnect them from the board inside the drone, but I feel like the software would think it was faulty and maybe not even let the drone fly. Maybe this is something we can send to DJI for a wish list item? Over Water Mode? :)

When flying a drone over water, be extremely cognizant of resting your thumb on the left control stick. I saw another content creator recently crashed his Air 2S into the water on a family fun day on the water and he thought he was flying fine, and then out of nowhere the drone hit the water and promptly sank to nearly 100 feet deep. He looked at the flight logs later and it showed he had slight downward pressure making the drone descend, and with the downward facing sensors having issues over water, the drone didn't protect itself. The best he could come up with was he may hve been unconsciously resting his thumb on the stick and slowly forcing it down. My degree is in computer electronics and making components waterproof isn't difficult, especially if you only get a small splash and quick submersion. If you do hit the water or get the drone wet, IMMEDIATELY remove the battery. The water isn't what kills the components, it is the power shorting between components that causes the damage. For any electronic device that gets wet, immediately unplug the power or remove the battery. I think once a single drone manufacturer comes out with a semi-waterproof drone, it will force other manufacturers to do the same to check off competitive boxes, and the waterproof ratings will quickly reach acceptable standards. When flying over water, even if the RTH kicks in, if you're flying into the wind while RTH, the battery may die before you get back safely to land. On a positive note, I was recently flying my Mini 3 Pro and the battery was forcing a landing because it was almost dead. I work in IT and as a technical person, I know there are safety measures built in, and I wanted to test this battery. I hovered over my deck and the drone tried to land, and I'd force it back up. I did this until the battery hit zero charge, and I kept doing this for about 5 minutes more just to see what would happen. The drone still had power to fly if I forced it to, and I'm guessing you could push the issue several minutes past the reported zero charge. So that critical battery warning is a good guide, but you do have some additional buffer charge if you get into a pinch. My normal preflight also includes taking off to just over the height of my head. I listen to the motors and rotors for any abnormal noise, and also yaw in a complete circle listening for anything I don't expect. I do not check every single time I fly, but I also check the batteries as I put them on a charger or pull them off to make sure they are not warm when they shouldn't be, or that they are not swelling. Tip for high winds...I was flying my Mavic Pro about 175 feet and I was getting wind warnings, and it was never enough to make much of a difference. Then I sent the drone higher and I was flying around videoing for the fun of it and not paying close attention to my range because I wasn't intentionally flying away. I was trying to fly back and I noticed the distance meter on the remote showed the drone was still going away from me, even after I switched to sport mode. I immediately started descending and looking for a safe place to land if it all went sideways, but knowing the wind is not as bad at lower altitudes, I dropped to about 150 feet to avoid trees, and the wind was slow enough to easily get back quickly in sport mode. One app I really like is ALOFT. It shows the airspace rating, temperature, wind speed, wind gust speed, visibility distance, humidity, cloud cover (such as currently 56% cloud cover and clouds starting at 2,919 ft. AGL. It also lists the next sundown or sunrise time, the kp index and impact, GPS signal. It also shows your lat/long/altitude, if the airspace is clear, tells the weather forecast, and some other features.

You forgot to mention tides, if you begin your flight at a position below high tide and don't update your RTH as the tide comes in, your drone could go swimming.
