Having worked structural repair on military and civilian aircraft for 47 years my last 20 years consisted of bond work. When we laminated multiple layers of fiberglass or carbon fiber, we would "debulk" between several layers to remove any trapped air and remove excess resin. That's something you might try on any future layups. Someone mentioned their concerns about the bond between the chain plate and the hull. Anytime we were attaching two precured parts as important as these chain plates it would be with a structural adhesive to insure a good bond and never a cold bond. Just food for thought.

Or layup the last few layers and instead on vac banging to self, vac bag to hull, that might work ?

This is true but Matt did do the laminate in several groups. Did you mostly work with pre-preg where de-bulking is even more important? Yes we will be using a good structural adhesive to stick to the hull. Not sure what you mean by a "cold bond". Will not use hot melt glue :)

I built carbon masts in NZ in the early 2000's Awesome note about peel ply bonding I've seen so many videos saying no need to sand if it's got peel ply. We tested this for delamination it's very strong in sheer but horrible in tension 100% the delamination point in about 15 tests funny enough were testing chain plates, your plates are overkill but not the strongest way to build them, still you can sleep well. Love the project cheers Glenn ps if your channel blows up maybe consider building a carbon mast have not seen and decent video on that.

That’s a whole lot of layers for those chain plates. It’s amazing how strong they will be (or are) if only one could lift the weight of the boat. I really enjoyed the music you played while you and your mom were laminating the extra layers on the vertical chain-plates. It brought back a lot of old memories and I found myself humming along with the video without realizing it.

Curious how you will attach the chainplates to the hull. With the massive glass base and the 30 layers of carbon fiber, it seems like a "glued" interface between these will be the weakest link. Any other mechanical attachments planned?
@evangatehouse5650
@evangatehouse5650 Жыл бұрын
Nothing mechanical. Epoxy adhesive + more overlaps of e-glass. Also will have huge safety factors. A few linear inches (along the chainplate length) of the glue bond is about equal to the wire breaking strength. We have more than a few inches....

Only thing I would suggest - you see when you pull the vac down and the breather is saturated quite quickly. Once it is saturated it looses it's ability to compress - can't compress a liquid - and air to travel. You could put a length of spiral tube to help maintain the vac across the bag.

Janneke is 110% correct about the weather; I hate it when it's hot and humid while many here complain about the winters (central NY). I say "you can only remove so much clothing during the summer, but you can always wear more during the winter". Funny thing is, the winters here are nothing like they used to be when I was a kid (over 50 years ago), a lot less snow these days.

I don't think, in my humble opinion, that it would affect the strength in any way. The forces are acting along the length of the assembly, and if 6 layers can support the weight of the hull, then (I forget how many layers in total) will definitely have an enormous safety factor. Then, consider how many chain plates there are in total, I think it'll be okay! The sailcloth will fail long before the chainplates fail.

I am curious, with all the fretting about correct wet out on the carbon, why you aren’t using vacuum infusion of the resin. The last time I was in a pro composite shop, they even used it on stacks of carbon to lay up wet. (Custom composites in Portland Maine, builder of hull molds) For those not in the know, with vacuum infusion, you lay up the cloth dry, and add in an extra tube at the end of the bag as far as possible from the vacuum port. Fold it over to close it. Pump the bag down, stick the tube in the cup of mixed resin and open the tube so it sucks the resin in. When the resin gets to the far end, crimp it closed. A bit of a trap in the vacuum line will keep the pump resin free.
@TheDuracellProject

infusion is a little outside of our scope. you have to use a specific kind of resin for infusion which we don't have and can't afford. maybe we'll do it in the future.

@@TheDuracellProject thanks for getting back to me. I didn’t realize it took specific resins. What is different about infusible resins? It really seems a lot easier, I always thought the reason it wasn’t more widespread was that most don’t have the vacuum bagging gear/peel ply.
