The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

I never realized the luminous beauty of Florence Henderson, and her spectacular voice. We all know her as Mrs. Brady ... Florence was so much more. Rest in peace, Beauty.

I always thought it would be great to have Florence Henderson and Shirley Jones sing a duet.

@Justin Florence and Shirley were friends actually, and just a little over about 10 years ago they joined up together for a concert tour.

Florence's Carol Brady role was only a part of her resume. She originated the lead role in the 1954 Broadway musical "Fanny." Her talents were many!

This song is like it was written JUST FOR HER. The last note is her best and she can hold it forever. It is an operetta send up of the best kind. Her costume and movements make it one of her very best television moments. I saw the movie when it cam out and her part was sad, not getting her lover, but loving back, still, for the sake of music.

I miss the classic Broadway musicals where singers were well trained and used their voices properly. Now all we hear in musicals are belters who go for volume with norregard for proper placement. I have not heard a legitimate well trained voice on Broadway in years. We need more classically trained voices in musical theatre.

I do agree, however todays musicals don't feature trained voices. I find Chenoweth's voice irritating- it has no warmth.@@postgarys

How does a girl from poverty in Kentucky end up singing like that ? Florence was under contract to Rogers and Hammerstein and did all the shows on the road. A true professional and well liked in the business.

Friendly correction: She was born and spent her early years in Dale, Indiana (Spencer County). Her early school experiences were split between St. Meinrad Archabbey school in nearby Ferdinand, Indiana and Rockport (Indiana) High School (my mom's alma mater, btw) before the nuns at the abbey worked to get her accepted into a prestigious drama program for her later high school years at a catholic high school, St. Philips, in Owensboro, Kentucky (which is no longer there, in case it helps to know). So that is maybe where you know the Kentucky reference involving Florence. After graduation, it was off to NYC and the rest is history.

Not to be contrite, but the team of Wright and Forrest took the music of Edvard Grieg and turned many of his art songs and piano pieces into the musical "Song of Norway". "Strange Music" was the title they used in the original score. They also took music of Alexander Borodin and created the musical "Kismet" which gave us "Stranger in Paradise", "Baubles, Bangles, and Beads" and "This is My Beloved".

This was really old hat in 1970. "Song of Norway" was an immense smash on Broadway and the West End, but the producers of the film seemed to forget that the sixties had intervened. The film was a badly-made (although wonderfully photographed) box-office disaster, and Florence Henderson's performance here, though fantastic, was way, way out of date. She seemed to be trying to channel Julie Andrews, but it simply sounds like she's been lifted from an operetta of a hundred years previous.
