The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

@@garyaugustus690 hahaha. I am NOT putting them down for their age at all. Just saying with they have more class then today's dancers. Picked more for their professionalism. Picked because they can show up, be shown a move, learn it in minutes and be expected to carry it out despite any distractions that may happen on live TV. Dancers of today are hired often for looks alone and taught dance steps and learn them over weeks/months and travel with the artist. Doing the same as these ladies did likely would hard for them.

I've watched this video many times because I love it and also to study it. And to see if he lip-synced and I've concluded that he didn't. Performers rarely lip-synced on The Ed Sullivan Show and Johnny Rivers was a performer who wouldn't want to. He moves down those stairs not only slowly but carefully coordinating his whole body and with his singing. I love the subtle feeling of how he's "made it" going with his strong singing of the end of the song. 💕🎵

Johnny Rivers just sang the exact same song and words as the Four Tops classic. He just the song at a lot slower pace and the words were more clearly spoken or enunciated where the audience could understand the words more. And it still turned out to be a huge hit song for Johnny Rivers, still wonderful but just in a different way from the Four Tops version.

levi stubbs is one of my favorite singers of all time. johnny rivers did him proud. he didn't try to out-sing him on this rendition, he just made a unique and incredibly good and worthy version of the original. love johnny rivers, he did a lot of cover songs, yes, but they were never cheap knock offs.

Johnny grew up in my hometown, Baton Rouge and graduated from high school there. My mom brought me up to like his music. In my thirties, I worked with Italian-American sisters who regaled me about life in the 1950s-60s. So exciting to hear their stories. They loved going to see Johnny Ramestella perform at the teeny clubs down by the river. I’d have given a lot to see that, but I’m Black, and they wouldn’t have let me in the door even if I had been old enough or born. (1’m only 54 now).

One of those rare and exceptional songs when both the original (The Four Tops) and remake (J. Rivers) are equally Fantastic! Each version is Superb in its own way and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE both of them. Full disclosure - this is one of my very Favorite songs of all time, FAVORITE 😉! The Four Tops are awesomely remarkable, and I love the Motown soul & rhythm. Johnny Rivers' "wall of sound" quality & crescendo makes his version so, so, so good! ❤️❤️❤️ Such wonderful music - real music.
