Beginner here I like how my songs are coming out using Luna and UAD’s plug-ins… Would I hear a big difference if I purchased either of theses ? Does this color sound just like a plug-in would or is it something totally different that I don’t understand yet ?

LUNA is genuinely a GOOD sounding DAW. The Neve summing is emulating analog summing (sending Buss stems of a master stereo feed through preamps to soften/colour the sound) provides a warmth to the sound, and fullness in the low end. The API provides a tight punch to the audio.

OK, I am new to mixing. So IF I understand this video correctly. You should use a summing plugin to mix down to a stereo two track. But you also said you can use it on indivisual tracks before you final output. IS that correct?

If you’re very new to mixing, I wouldn’t worry about sum mixing and prioritise learning about gain staging, buss processing groups of instruments and top down mixing. Sum mixing is effectively what your master buss does in your DAW anyway, this plugin is emulating an analog method of mixing buss sends with hardware.

Do you find more use for this in mastering stems or do you still find yourself using this in the actual mix process before mastering ? Just wanna get your prof. input on whether u think going through the process of stemming out my tracks from logic just to work with this in luna is worth it sonically if they're going to be mastered by someone other then myself w/ all the candy analog gear. Hey, thanks. The summing desks can only be applied to busses in Luna so for me it makes sense to just use them for instrument bus mix downs from Logic (otherwise you’d need one bus per track in Kuna which could get heavy going on your CPU - Summing is CPU not DSP powered). I think using this in addition to analogue mastering has a charm.

I have dangerous summing...why would i need LUNA'? Serious...and do those summing plugins only work with luna? Can they work like regular uad plugins? Trying to understand

If you have analog obviously you won’t need a plugin emulation. Yes, the Summing is Native to Luna only.

Thanks. I do the same: produce in Logic and miz in LUNA with the neve and additional D Bus+ But....how do you get your audio levels/panning/ mono/stereo the same in LUNA as the rough mix in Logic?

Export all the bounced stereo buss files with panning and automation and effects etc (bass buss as mono). The Neve Summing can influence buss track compression/openness depending on how hard you push it so it may require a little further automation once in Luna. The more complex way of doing it would be to import ALL the stems, and buss mix them with the Neve Summing applied to the instrument busses. But then you may as well mix the whole track in Luna once the tracks are edited.

Ok this adds some enhancements to the mix but nothing to do with analogue summing. It sounds just like some EQ and saturation presets applied, that you can achieve with any other plugin. But in all cases it’s totally different than the effect that real analogue summing adds.

I've a question. Is Luna Summing replicable in other DAWs simply putting a UAD Neve Preamp or UAD API Preamp as a first insert on all my final buses? One for the Drum bus, on for the Bass bus, etc. The more a think about this the more I think this could be a way of emulate this summing method in other DAWs. I really hope to hear the opinion of all of you

Yes, this is common. It won’t be the same Neve summing amps that’s been modelled for this plugin but a similar effect can probably be achieved.

I'm just not hearing much of a difference, other than the 3 dB jump at the low impedance setting. Tonally, I hear almost no difference. Monitoring through Dynaudio LYD 8's.

I think I needed to drive the Neves harder to pull out more difference. It is there, it’s a slightly fuller thicker sound. 🙂
