The Ellen Fisher Podcast

Күн бұрын

Welcome to the first episode of The Ellen Fisher Podcast! To kick off the show I thought it fitting to go in depth on one of the topics I’m most passionate about, abundant plant-based nutrition. I’ve learned so much over the last 15 years on my vegan journey both from experts in the field as well as from my own experience, and I am so excited to share this information with you more in depth than I ever have before. Because it can be easy to get confused with so much conflicting information out there. Today we are going to clear the mud and simplify nutrition to make sense of the noise that is diet culture. I like to take a balanced approach that really considers both the large body of scientific evidence as well as a logical and simplified understanding towards what’s natural for us based on our physiology and how we are designed to thrive.
There’s a lot I want to cover so I’ll be breaking this up into two parts.
In part 1 today I’m going to cover:
My healing story
A few of my favorite plant-based books/resources
The break down and simplification of plant-based nutrition from the overwhelming scientific body of evidence. (resources shared below)
The Blue Zones and what it tell us
What our natural diet is as a species based on physiological traits and natural inclination
Food subsidies
What isolated versus whole foods are.
THE DETAILS: what foods are best for our health
Optimizing your nutrient bioavailability in foods
And a little on specific TIPS TO THRIVE… but more on that in part 2
Balance is key
I hope you thoroughly enjoy this episode and feel empowered to take charge of your health and promote longevity through plant-based nutrition which positively impacts not only you, but others and the world around you. And don’t forget to listen to part 2!
As always, consult with your trusted healthcare provider before making any drastic changes in your diet, especially If you are on medication. And hey, don’t take my word for all this, do your research too so you can stand strong in your own conclusions.

11 years ago, I think I had like one KZbinr I followed who was vegetarian. I was irratated by their rants regarding eating meat, but continued to follow them because some of what they said just made sense. After watching him for a bit, I was recommended the same video you mentioned Ellen, "The Best Speech You will Ever Hear". There is a section in that video where Gary says "If you participate, you have to watch what you are doing to the animals" or something similar followed by factory farm videos. I became vegetarian overnight and vegan not long after. It changed my life completely and I don't understand why so many people are against it. It doesn't take a lot of effort, its simple, and it makes sense scientifically. Thank you for sharing!

I hope this doesn’t sound like I’m arguing- I’m only stating my point. I am very into watching omnivore and vegan KZbin channels but the differing information between the two hasn’t lead me to an animal product free diet being optimal. I’ll keep educating myself until I find the answer that I find to be most credible. Plant based is still on the table, just not there yet :)

I'm glad i found your channel. I have done so much research. Now... here I am, I'm vegan. 100%. Not going back. And I know I should be eating wfpb, no oil. Problem? My food is so bland. I don't know how you guys do it. I seasoned my food today... I am clearly not good at it. I ate it. But... let's just say... all i had today was a green smoothie (which is the only think I am good at making), and rice with stir fried veggies. I used very little oil as I'm still learning. Result? Meh. So...I skipped dinner. I'm hoping that maybe if I'm more hungry...food will start tasting better. Anyway...I am hoping that your channel can help. I am NOT going back...not anymore. I know this is the way for me... I just wish I could actually love vegetables as you all seem to. 🙄😒☹

So grateful, you are here :) You know before the Covid I was vegan since 10 years and because of scarcely of fresh food I actually was on a survival mode when we had to strengthen our body and mind . I had other reason that out ne down too well I didn’t have no choice ! :( and little money. Now I am really tired and just don’t know and to go back on track and I actually lost a lot of weight and look ghostly . I wish I can regain myself and health . So thank you for your video . Oh I didn’t know garlic and ginger increased the amount of zinc absorption. Yeah 👍 the blue zones , absolutely! Certainly, will do my best . I ve started back with smoothies a few days ago but even that I kinda forgot. 🤦‍♀️ plus I don’t have a garden and live with people who are mainly eat eaters . For people who can do it and have still energy to implement everything, just do it . I mean do it now. Cause when you are sick and tired and nobody to support you it’s very very hard to get back your held especially when you get older . Love and best of health to all of you . “Ancestral eating” has been a big buzz word lately for eating raw dairy, and why people feel it’s important for health, but people using this reason tend to ignore that many cultures had no access to dairy pre-colonialism. My Native American, Panamanian, and Filipino ancestors did not have access to dairy. I find the point that children are innately kind to animals and how it’s abnormal and concerning when children are not a really good point. Young mammals of species that that hunt/ need meat instinctively act this out when young. Like feline kittens batting, clawing, and biting at mice. I also don’t see people having instinct to attack defenseless animals when out and about, as animals that are opportunistic hunters would. When we look at indigenous cultures hunting, they don’t enjoy taking the animals life and many have ways of thanking the animals and apologizing, mourning for that animal and telling it they did so for their survival. Animals were eating much more sparingly by indigenous cultures who had to hunt them. I have many family members who hunt, because they don’t want to contribute to factory farming and they do not like the killing of the animal either. They may feel pride after l but do not enjoy the taking of life part. Just some thoughts that came up watching the video. I’ve been plant based over 10 years.

I also think it's important to note that this is a very privileged (though common), American perspective. I went from eating a raw food diet for 7 years in Canada where we had access to all of the things you mentioned, farmers markets, local produce, amazing frozen fruits & veg, reasonable prices for these foods...etc. I hadn't realized how lucky I was. I received a huge wakeup call when I moved to Scandinavia and found that the majority of the fruits and vegetables I was accustomed to were not available here. Everything is wrapped in plastic, there's no farmers markets, and it's only possible to get about 3 foods grown locally for 2 months of the year (potaotes, strawberries, and cucumbers). More tropical fruits, or really anything that isn't grown in a cold climate simply isn't available or is such a low quality that it isn't worth eating. It's definitely possible to live a vegan lifestyle here, but a raw food diet is near to impossible unless you have low standards, and even a whole foods lifestyle is difficult as the heartier vegetables that you'd expect to find in cold climates don't exist here either (squashes, leafy greens). I say this because a healthy vegan diet definitely isn't accessible to everyone. I was surprised that such a wealthy country like Denmark had such low standards when it came to produce, but it's simply a lack of education here. People don't know that better produce exists in other countries with similar climates, so they assume that plant foods don't taste good. It's quite bizarre.
@Samuel-bu7xr
@Samuel-bu7xr Жыл бұрын
It's not "simply a lack of education" as you state, it's actually quite naive and insulting of you to take this view. Perhaps research the cultural dietary patterns of Scandinavia, and observe the very obvious link between climatic conditions, geography and the favoured foods eaten as part of the native Scandinavian diets as a whole, before projecting your North American perspective and vegan values on our countries.
@Tarahhh
@Tarahhh Жыл бұрын
@@Samuel-bu7xr it has little to do with the dietary patterns in Scandinavia, otherwise you wouldn't see things like lychees in the grocery stores, or people eating fast food. Unless you're suggesting that Scandinavians are eating the same diet as their ancestors did? I've lived here for 6 years, and I've seen a huge lack of education about produce and the quality that people have come to expect here. Even though most food is imported, the grocery stores, who should be experts on produce, often get low quality, out of season items. Even tasty coconut in Copenhagen who claim to be experts in tropical fruits, have very low standards. There's virtually no education about produce here, especially seeing as the food pyramid is a cultural food pyramid as opposed to one based on health. The government even admitted that. When I talk to people about fruit, they have no idea how to choose a ripe fruit. People here buy hard, green mangos and think that's how a Mango should be. It comes down to the fact that they simply aren't educated about food quality, which has a lot to do with the fact that there's no culture around talking to your local farmers and understanding how food is grown. From what I've seen, Scandinavians eat the same shitty diet based on animal products as most north Americans, they just use more common items and brands found here. In a way, though, it's even worse, because there's no wide movement towards healthy eating, as the politicians spurn the advice from the WHO about adjusting food pyramids to remove or lower animal product consumption.

Vegan changed my life, and I want to say how amazing I feel as a healthy whole foods vegan. It took some time for my body to feel the full effects of veganism, post vegetarianism. I tried everything, every "diet," went back and forth on what was best. I read so many books. When I went 100% vegan, making no exceptions, as vegan for life (when traveling, eating out, being at celebrations), I truly felt the change. You can't be vegan sometimes to see any difference, you would have to be a vegan at least six months straight to feel your body change, in your gut, in your skin, in your energy, and of course your mindset. The longer I was vegan, the more fit I became, as I was able to have more energy to work out longer, turning a mile walk, into 15 miles, and not feeling bad. Then I started running, I mean...everything changed in my life as a vegan. I had serious health problems (overweight, psoriasis autoimmune problems,arthritus, gut problems, low energy, eventually a heart problem, and other weird pains). Thats all gone now. I love animals, and the thought of hacking into one of these innocent creatures, versus a delicious bowl of fruit, there are no questions. Thank you Ellen for your great podcast.

It's not only the sight of slaughter but also the smell. I remember driving along the coast of California with my sister when we passed through some cattle-farming town. For miles the air was a thick, giant fart you couldn't escape. I understood completely after that why it's always the poorest and most disenfranchised that end up working in these places. They're not a place for humans.

Hi Ellen! I’m from Portugal and I wanted to say that your podcast helped me to refocus on my Health. I’ve been vegan for almost 3 years and since the begging you became my favorite vegan and health nutrition influencer. I use to be a very healthy vegan but since a month ago I had to make a big decision in my life that made me feel very sad so I started to eat vegan fast food like almost every day😔. I gain weight, I started to feel so bad and started to feel a lack of energy that I’ve never had experienced before. Tank you so much for help me to be back on track and I wish the best for you, your family and your new podcast !! I love you !

I stopped eating meat because of the environmental impacts. Then, I stopped eggs for health. Finally, I gave up dairy after birthing and nursing my own baby. I couldn't stand the idea of taking a baby away from it's mother to steal her milk, esp given that that milk makes us fat and sick, and it's production pollutes our environment and is one of the biggest contributors to climate change.

Well if you mainly heat whole foods like veggies and fruit you're good. If you eat processed sugars and nr 1 in america high fructose corn sirup you won't be feeling good. Processed sugars are the problem not the natural ones.

Hey :) I‘m vegan and love what you’re saying just one quick note: taking children to go fruit picking vs slaughter houses is highly dependent on the culture and where you are in the world. In some parts of the world not much fruit grows and kids don’t go pick any of them for fun, but they have animals at home or near by and definitely see them being slaughtered or even help, especially when it comes to religious slaughtering, seeing an animal being slaughtered can be normal for a child, depending on how they grow up.

Yeah and female circumcision is also culturally a thing. Doesn't make it okay or civilized :/
@whatsonmymind4848
@whatsonmymind4848 3 жыл бұрын
@@lemurianchick I‘m not arguing wether slaughtering an animal is right or wrong, I‘m saying that the first argument of why slaughtering animals is wrong, because we wouldn’t show children the process, is not correct. Because in some societies to slaughter an animal is something completely normal for a child to see and even do. Or in some religious context children learn that a life is given for their own, so they can eat and survive and that is something they know is acceptable and they see it at least and a semi-regular basis. So yeah... the Argument of what children think is normal or not doesn’t really show wether or not animal slaughter is right.

Also, you should ( if you haven’t already) interview someone who grows their own food and going over to start, so much information out there, but it’d be helpful to hear on your podcast. I also saw you are interviewing Fully Raw Kristina! Omg she is one of my favorites!!! Also Sahara Rose if you haven’t already looked into her. ♥️♥️♥️✨✨🌙

How much protien do you eat a day. I felt great eating a plant based diet but then fell protien deficient and anemia frim iron and b12. I'm eating meat again now, 130 grams of protien a day and now my body can't absorb it at all. I went back to meat the last 3 years and still can't absorb it. How much plant protien a day do you need to not fall deficient?

Great info, tips, and video. I have been vegetarian all my life and vegan for the past 3 years. And the thing I struggle with most is feeling satisfied after I eat, fatigue, energy levels, and getting the right amount of nutrients. Especially since I am petite and don't have a big appetite. I am hoping to make a lot of shakes this summer with protein powder and I will see if that helps.

Yeah this all sounds great if it were true that eating meat and drinking dairy is bad for your health....but in fact it's the best for you, low sugar, high protein, fat soluble vitamins, collagen, etc. Yes vegan SOUNDS awesome and wish it were true that it's a healthy diet but it's not. Bad for the planet and our health. Sadly. Veganism destroyed my health and that's when I learned all about how bad it is for the planet, all the chemicals, mono cropping, sheer amount of volume and shipping to sustain a plant based diet etc and then how horrible it is for your health. It's a total lie that our bodies are more like herbivores. Our teeth and intestines are 10000xs closer to a carnivore. Our stomach acid, length of intestines so that our meat can be processed quickly without decay in our bodies, plant food literally rots in our stomachs because we dont have 3 to digest it properly. I could go on and on. A family can live off of ONE cow for an entire year and meet all of the dietary requirements. How much land and crappy undigestable vegan food do you need for a year? Not to mention the deficiencies.

Thank you, Ellen! I loved your emphasis on how nobody wants to work at a slaughter house so why would we even eat meats, and also on chewing your greens. So many people say that it is not great to eat so many greens but they may say this because they are not considering that digestion starts in our mouth, so I am so happy you mentioned this! I will keep eating my greens and chewing more!

I really enjoy the topics you choose to discuss and I'm learning a lot out of it :) I wonder if you could please ellaborate when you can on "eating your breakfast" vs intermittent fasting where one has their breakfast later, lets say close to lunch time. Also you mentioned tofu. Isn't most of the tofu genetically modified? I don't eat it because of GMOs. What is your opinion on that?
