I agree. Even though this is only the seagames where phils is dominant, they should've included a couple of young amateur players to let them prepare for future international competitions. But anyways, tim cone is a great coach and knows what he's doing. And with coach tab as the program director, I believe we will be heading on a right direction in the future.

I wanted to reply to the video about improving your national team but I can leave this here. I'm from Serbia and I don't want to offend anyone but as far as I can tell, you guys watch too much NBA. You're trying to copy their system and you don't have the resources, coaches or the talent pool for that. See what's happening with China, they invest a lot of money but their national team is not doing any better internationally. They are copying top tier only, and not youth training and that's why they have no good young players on an international level. I watched few of your games on YT and as far as I can tell you are very static, one player has the ball and the others are just waiting for him to do something, if he fails he drops the ball of to someone else and you start over. You need to create a culture of playing and not just run'n gun, and1 mixtape type of basketball. Send your young coaches to study here in Serbia and then bring the culture over, cos I don't thing that you can change your current players and the way they play. You have to start from very young kids and teach them the basics of the game and then maybe in 15-20 years do something internationally. The hardest thing (I don't know is this possible or not) you need to do is get taller, your doctors need to find out why aren't you growing enough, change something in your diet cause players are getting taller and craftier and you can't beat both height and talent. We have 7 million people at the moment and we are losing people daily, either from migration or from higher mortality but we still produce a lot of good players. And we have a few tall young players, look them up: Aleksej Pokusevski, 18, he's a 7ft point forward, Filip Petrusev, 19, 7ft crafty center, Dalibor Ilic, 19, 6ft9 athletic small forward, Borisa Simanic, 21, 6ft10 stretch PF. Those are the kind of players that you need to prepare for just from Serbia and the rest of Europe is no joke also. You have 12 teams playing conferences, you need to change that system. You need a geographically based multi level type of league, something like we have in Europe. Distribute those 12 teams to your biggest cities and allow those teams to go down a league if they are at the bottom of the standings at the end of the season, that way you create competition and create several hubs around the country where you can get your talent from and follow more players from a young age. Cult of your team is very important, you cheer for your team and not individual players and that way you create the sense of belonging to a team, this then translates to a more team game and that's way better for your national team. And leave the draft and all that stuff to the NBA, you need to have teams coach kids from a young age all over the country, not just in Manilla (I'm guessing) and maybe have a national academy like INSEP in France for your best prospects. This is basically what I think you should do, maybe I said a bunch of stupid stuff but that's what I think you should do. Greetings from Serbia and hope to see your team improve so that you can beat USA also ;)

I totally agree with you sir, one of our greatest problem here in my nation is that our culture in bball is far too much insular leading to internal stagnation. For over many years our local league eg. Pba. has place limits to our players like banning foreign coaches placing height limits to imports and focusing to much in nba kind of play instead broadening their minds and embrace the euroleague or liga de las americas style. I hope that there will be long lasting changes leading to the development of our bball culture.

I agree 100% on your opinion ‘bout not letting younger guys play. This is the SEA Games, not ASIAN games! No China, Iran, S.Korea or Japan. I think this is the main reason why we dont have NBA players. We just let the young ones play with each other. Some NBA players are there because of their “exposure.” International exposure = good marketing.
@jojiezappy25 жыл бұрын
I think the team is composed this way because the primary goal for the moment is just to defend the SEA Games basketball title on home soil at all costs, and not really use it as preparation for the 2023 World Cup, because anything less than gold would be a disaster of epic proportions as far as our people are concerned. The backlash for losing at home would be harsh. This veteran team is stronger than any team that may include talented but young prospects, including those from the amateurs. No doubt this veteran all pro team can achieve that goal with plenty to spare. I don't have a problem with that, because anyway there would still be a lot of international competitions along the way before 2023, which we can more appropriately use as preparation for 2023, wherein we can bring in the younger guys who are part of the pool for 2023. I'm just happy to feel confident that we are going to defend our Asean supremacy. I'll worry about our prospects in Asia and the rest of the FIBA world for another day. Go Gilas!

With the currently pool of the Gilas pilipinas basketball team, it can be assumed that CTC will only be coaching for the SEA games bcoz as he also explained that most of the young players excluded on the pool will have their time in preparation for the FIBA WC in 2023, meaning a new program will be set up for these young players and most probably he will let the new appointed coach to pick his own pool for the WC, but in the meantime he needs a roster that can easily adopt to his system with the limited time for the coming SEA games.

Well the second point mentioned "Why Veteran"? Coach Cone explained to the media sports journalist and bloggers TIME SHORT it easy to comprehend or adapt his system and they were most likely familiar one another. Regard Dela Cruz he is not the caliber like of let says "Pogoy" nor Rosario-Manuel but he is familiar of Cone system give advantage for him. Another reason this present 15 lists of pool players is not consider core group to the FIBA world cup 2023 as coach cone said that after his tour of duty in SEAG he turn over to SBP the decision whom to select regular coach. temporarily because no other choice qualify handling the job if not wrong coach Baldwin withdraw result Cone take the responsibility.

By the way CStan already played in 2017 SEAG edituon. With regards to the eligibility of Stanley, CStan and CRoss, SEAG same as Asian games, they are following Olympic Council of Asia or OCA rules. This is unlike Fiba rules that requires acquiring a passport before age of 16. The rules of OCA is ancestal roots of the country representing, 3yrs residency for representing his new country or representing his country for any intl games such as olympics, regional, WC and etc. That explains the eligibility of the three players, same eligibility rules that applies to JC when he was allowed to play in AG last year. With regards to Coach Tim, choosing a veteran players for SEAG. I think the main reason aside from the fact of having a short prep to understand his system is that SEAG will be played here in our country, we have to make sure that we will stay on top, and we still own this tournament especially basketball. Tim Cone always believe that the best players are still from PBA. Other SEA countries are also beefing up there lineups, IND with Bowles, THA with Lamb. Last SEAG we let the younger guys play and we have hard time beating the Thai and Ind. And I think we have to make a statement after our WC debacle, that's why SBP together with PBA and the help of two corporate rivals are footing there best efforts. After this as you've said stakeholders will start to plan for 2023 WC. I still go with PBA players mix with younger guys Fajardo will still be at his prime, more experience and hope utilization in intl games. Maybe combine him with Kai and Edu, but let these two trained and played in EU and US and see there growth. Then you have Rosario and hope we can develop another Marcio who can hit the 3, can penetrate as well as to defend. And another Castro. A naturalized player who can play 3 or 4 positions. Attitude in and out of the ballgame I prefer JB but is no longer young by 2023. Need to choose a better scorer than Blatch who can play 3 or 4 position with the attitude of JB.

For ross, and two stans Sea and asian games are the 2 tournaments that they can proudly represent our country as a local player and not as a naturalized player. Aside from tim cone's explanation that was already released regarding his choice of players I think this will be the last time for veteran players a chance to play for flag and country. Lastly In my opinion its good to start using younger players after we know already the coach and the system he will use.

Eric , the SEA games,the Asian Games and the Olympics (as far as i know) are not FIBA sanctioned tournaments( the U-16 passport rules doesn't apply here), but they use the FIBA rules in officiating the games(officiated by FIBA accredited referees).The eligibility of these games are much more liberal than that of FIBA tournaments (Asian Qualifiers, World Cup, Ironically the Olympic Qualifiers).I hope this is not confusing. It means that the Philippines can form a team of Fil-Ams (even if the whole 12 of them or 11 plus a naturalized player) who is not necessarily FIBA eligible players (but there should only 1 naturalized player per team).Another thing,as far as i know, is that the host country is the one approving the eligibility of the players.I hope this helps.

This team and coaching staff is just a stopgap measure to make sure we don't embarrass ourselves in the SEA Games. The real development starts with the home-and-away FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers next year. We can use guys like Ross, Pringle and Standhardinger for competitions like the SEA Games and Asian Games, especially when they run concurrent with major FIBA competitions, so we can give our FIBA-eligible players a rest. I'd go for Jimmy Alapag as long-term national team coach. He has ties to both the San Mig and First Pacific groups. Plus he's young and open-minded enough to listen to a program director like Tab and to whatever foreign consultants we might hire.
@ramrocker10045 жыл бұрын

Most likely, the SBP is not using the SEA Game as a preparation for the FIBA WC 2023, hence they took CTC as "one and done" coach to handle specifically for the SEA Games only given the limited time after coach Yeng resigned as the coach of NT and they gave CTC a blanket authority to choose his own players...so we should not connect this to WC 2023 and just wait for the SBP come up with a program for the WC preparation considering that they are still looking for a head coach that will handle the national team for future FIBA tournaments.

Our pros are supposed to get experience by competing with STRONGER teams. And no offense to other ASEAN countries but playing ball with them when we're sending PBA players is kind of ... boring. It's not fun to watch a game where the score gap is 40 pts. Lol. I want something that looks like the Meralco-Ginebra finals in 2016. The best way to make the SEAG basketball to watch is to being in amateur Pinoy cagers. I think we should be sending UAAP to SEAG, not even PBA players. (After all, many UAAP players will end up in the PBA)

Yeah, I’m surprised because he just came from injury. And there’s more deserving veteran like Alex Cabagnot

Well the reason why they included the likes of Pringle, Standhardinger and Ross in the lineup for the SEA games is because the other Southeast asian countries will also include half asians that are also ineligible in FIBA. The reason Castro did not play im the world cup because he does not like Yeng Guiao. He knows Yeng is a stupid coach and has favoritism.

Poor assessment of Eric menk.ctc said it just for the sea games why this pool selected.and lack of time..also pringle,Ross and standhardinger..eligible only 4 sea games and Asian games.after this sea games they have new pool to be selected including the college players ang young PBA players.why Eric menk cant understand the reason why these players selected..for once and for all Eric these pool selected only for sea games. As coach Tim said the young ones have their time after this..got it..
