Turns Out The Dwemer Are Still Alive

Skyrim and indeed the entire Elder Scrolls universe have long harbored many mysteries, however perhaps the greatest mystery in Elder Scrolls history is whatever happened to the Dwemer. The Dwemer, were of course a society of increadibly gifted elve native to modern day Skyrim and Morrowind who mysteriously vanished in the 700s of the First Era. In today's video we'll explore the theory that they very likely survived their disappearances and that the Dwemer are still out there somewhere in The Elder Scrolls universe.

First thing we have that actually quallifies was made by Louis Beauchamp, a breton in Morrowind the Blood Moon Expansion... but canonically I can't find any evidence or even references to the Dwemmer building or using Air Ships.

i think the plane of oblivion transporter makes the most sense. especially since deadra give out dwemer tech to the player. but i don't think the dwemer made it as gods per-say, although they may live forever within the plane of oblivion that they occupy. but the plane of oblivion they are in, their artifacts are freely taken by the deadra and reused and repurposed by those who serve the deadric princes in some way within tamreal. although i have an theory of my own, and it's based off of how a part of your soul is traped in the soul carne, and the method used by serana to get you into the realm. basically she kind of soul trapped you partially which made it so the player could enter the plane of oblivion without you being dead and resistance into the portal, this was a method she learned from her mother who must have learned it from somewhere else, perhaps from another deadric prince. hermaous mora comes to mind because he's the deadric prince of knowledge and fate. which also might explain the advanced portal and how that works.

My theory is that the Dwemer spent generations relying on tones, and to get their new slaves to embrace tones they took their eye sight, so the snow elves had to rely on hearing. But who knows. I've spent years being excited to find out more about the deep folk. Thanks so much for this video.

In Morrowind they say that the Dwemer used the Hammer of Lorken if you ever beat the game saying you could dissappear like the Dwemer if you use it too much. Not to get into a lengthy debate the Dwemer belived in logic and intelligence. Lorken I believe was that representation. In Elder Scrolls IV they explain the Dwemer. Especially in Red Mountain.

Maybe it's outside the scope of this video but I swear I read or heard in game that the Nords came to settle in the land the Falmer were in, something sparked a battle between the two (like the Falmer just didn't like the Nords, or thought they were inferior or ugly) so the Flamer decided to try to wipe out the Nords and once backed into a corner like a wild animal, the Nords struck back with genocidal rage and tried to completely eradicate the Falmer from existence? That's when the Falmer sought out aid from the Dwemer and the rest of what is said about them in this video? It's been a long time since I played Skyrim but I think that's where I got it from. It could also have been a case of the victors writing history and the Nords changed some aspects to lighten their own dark past. I should scour this channel for a video about the Falmer...

It's in the book of the "prince snow elf", in the begin the elfs look at the nords like animals when arrive from Athmora, not a menace, but when the nords began to expand, the war betwen them start. The elfs lose the battle, the prince and their people escape with the dwarves, but the dwarves enslave them, in the books of the DLC DOWNGUARD, you read stories about them, and how they, the dwarves, treat them like servants, and with the time, like slaves...

If we're going by the "relocation" theory, I feel like the return of the Dwemer to Tamriel could make for an interesting setting and conflict for a future Elder Scrolls installment. I would say 6, but I don't know how far along with development Bethesda is to know for sure if it could still be implemented at this point. Picture this: in their thousands of years of absence from the mortal realm, the Dwemer have been able to continue their tonal research unabated, and while they didn't manage to achieve godly status, have at the very least achieved immortality. A pair of tonal architects have figured out a way to return to Tamriel with the use of portals, enabling them to move entire airships (and their crews along with them) between planes in the blink of an eye. Problem is, one of the architects, the more belligerent one who would be the main villain of the story (we're going to call him the "Warmonger"), sees it as a means to invade Tamriel and establish the Dwemer as the ruling race on Nirn. Why would they want to return to Tamriel at all if they possessed the means of exploring even further, you ask? Well, our villain still remembers the Battle of Red Mountain (since he became immortal) and has held a grudge against the other races for the next thousands of years as a result. The other architect, the wiser and more benevolent one who later becomes your main ally in the story (we'll call him the "Benefactor"), firmly opposes the idea, and tries to convince his life-long friend that the people of Tamriel of the "modern" day are not responsible for the actions of their ancestors and don't deserve to suffer. Because of their importance in Dwemer society, their difference of opinion causes a divide within Dwemer society between the people who support the Warmonger and the Benefactor. Unfortunately, the Warmonger's supporters overwhelm those of the Benefactor and thus, the Dwemer start preparing to go to war against Tamriel. And this is where you come in. When the game starts, you find yourself in the holding cells of a Dwemer airship (as has become tradition in Elder Scrolls games, you start as a prisoner), captured by scouts of the Warmonger who have been sent into Nirn in secret. Character creation, name, race, all the usual jazz. Once you're done creating your character, you are contacted by the shade of the Benefactor (you don't know his name yet and he wears a mask) telling you that he's going to help you escape, but can't stay in contact for too long or the others will detect his interference. During a gap in the soldiers' and automatons' patrol, he remotely opens the door to your cell. The Benefactor continues to assist you remotely as you make your way through the airship, finding early-game gear, spells, etc. and gaining your first few levels (the airship is pretty much the Helgen keep of this hypothetical game). When you make it to the bridge and manage to defeat the captain, the Benefactor comes out of the shadows and reveals himself as your helper. He also shamefully admits that he was the one who was leading the crew of the airship that had captured you and the other prisoners. He explains that he actually fooled the Warmonger into letting him go to Nirn to "acquire specimens" for research into race-targeted biological warfare that the Dwemer would then use in their invasion of Nirn. His true purpose was to warn the people of Tamriel of the imminent invasion and, hopefully, convince them to build a massive device he personally designed without the Warmonger's knowledge that would permanently stop any Dwemer portal from appearing on Nirn. You are then teleported back to Tamriel (Hammerfell could serve as the game's province) and start on your quest to rally the people against the imminent threat of the Dwemer invasion. I... don't really know where to go from there, but I think it's a pretty solid basis. If you have any ideas, don't hesitate to share. :)

Sounds interesting, only thing it’ll come pretty close to another Fallout game story line with airplanes, guns and warships. I think anything futuristic will eventually lead up to science fiction stories like Star Wars or even Star Trek with space ships and laser weapons to say the least lol. But I would rather place the Dwemer in a far more worse situation than what anyone could have imagined... The Dwemer race are trapped in an alternate reality, stuck in between two parallels of the universe called the VOID. They did in fact achieved immortality but for a price because of their ambition, prejudice and greed they are stuck in between reality and a non reality. The Dwemer are somewhat frozen in time, not allowing them to advance any further. That concept would explain the reason for time travel and people bumping into Dwemers in what some call “Oblivion” when they make a time jump. However, someone in a long future (a Tamriel scientist) perfected time travel through Dwemer research and technology and is now able to make time travel possible without any flaw. After traveling to the past, this scientist watches the pain and suffering of these ancient people and admiring their achievements, he is trying to help them escape, this time limbo they are stuck in. The scientist apparently finds the mathematical formula he’s worked on most of his life and prings into action believing in his theory. (That explains why there’s a big rift in time space continuum all over the Universe, causing creatures to appear in Dwemer caves. It’s kinda like if space and time is desperately trying to get rid of something that’s not suppose to be there). This Tamriel scientist is now able to unlock the mystery of the Dwemer disappearance legend through time travel. As he unlocks this mystery he releases the Dwemer back into Tamriel but to no availability or hospitality of the other races who sees the newly arriving Dwemer as an invasion, sort of like earth invading aliens. That’s when all hell breaks lose in Tamriel as the Dwemer fight to take back what they’ve lost. So, at the start of the game the main quest would be to pick a side. Will you help the scientist find the necessary puzzle pieces to get the Dwemers back into Tamriel. Or will you conspire to sabotage his work with other races to keep the invading Dwemers away from Tamriel. If you choose to help the scientist you’ll become an enemy of some in Tamriel and the Dwemers will eventually invade entirely. But If you choose to help the Tamriel forces against the mad scientist, by destroying his work, the scientist will be very elusive and evade your movements. The title should be called Elder Scrolls, The Return of the Dwemer. Nonetheless, I enjoyed reading your story. Thanks for sharing it.

@@ricoyola The comparison is even more on point than you realize, considering I'm a Star Wars fan. I therefore can't 100% deny the possibility that I was influenced, lol. But joking aside, it's not impossible to involve more "modern" technology in the universe without sacrificing the medieval fantasy atmosphere. The Dwemer's tech would still have that steampunk aesthetic without necessarily falling into Star Wars planetary invasion territory. Maybe explain through some sort of magico-babble that the portals require tremendous amounts of magical energy to keep open, so they can't instantaneously teleport hundreds of starships all across the realm at once?

I dont think the Dwemer were transported to Oblivion. I think they were actually trading their inventions with the Daedric Princes for magical knowledge of some kind be it traversing realms or general knowledge. Due to their attitude of not really respecting the Daedric Princes or seeing themselves as equals however the Daedric Princes got kinda mad at them and perhaps gave the Dwemer intentionally wrong information which caused the spell they were creating to go awry. edit: Oh and the Dwemer intentionally blinded the Snow Elves/Falmer because being blind forces you to develop heightened senses like hearing which might have allowed the Falmer to hear tones the Dwemer werent capable of hearing.

....youre half right... The dwemer were indeed absorbed into their god, but they became its brass skin. Numidium. In the quest with arniel gane you give him Keening, one of the tools Kagrenac used to mess with the Heart of Lorkhan. Upon striking his little soul gem, a massive blast overtakes him and he dissapears, leaving no remains behind, however, you can summon his shade. This is because he was "bound" to you, the closest divine being (dragon soul and all that), kagrenac did the same thing, except he, and almost every other dwarf became anumidium's skin. Whether or not this experiment failed or was a success is unknown, though I lean towards the former

Arniel's situation provides a possible answer. But raises more questions. Once Arniel disappears, you can summon him back. But he provides no commentary and is a mindless husk. My theory is that, as a shade, you're not seeing the true Arniel. Merely an echo of him. And a temporary one at that since he only sticks around for sixty seconds. You can also summon Dwemer Centurion Sphere but this object is also temporary. When the effect ends, the Sphere returns to Oblivion. The planes of Oblivion are infinite. So, my guess is that the Dwemer are out there somewhere. But no one on Tamriel is powerful enough to conjure more than a shade, aka echo, of the Dwemer and their constructs back from Oblivion. Maybe if one had the Heart of Lorken, they could try. But that's at the center of a volcano right now.

In regards to the snow elves, the Dwemer paragraph refers to “sent our machines against your enemies, to thereby take you under”. There is a clear separation between the Dwarves and the Snow Elves, as they talk about ‘our machines’ and ‘your enemies’. This implies that the Dwarves and the Snow Elves weren’t working together from the Dwarves perspective. Also, the phrase ‘take you under’ implies that the Dwarves were planning on possessing the Snow Elves from the beginning, as they take them, not bring, welcome or invite them. I think that the Dwarves realised that they could use the Snow Elves for their own means, be it experiments or as workers, and saw the humans purge against the Snow elves as an opportunity to pretend to come to the Snow Elves rescue and then exploit them later. The Dwarves were only fighting the humans so that they could have the Snow Elves, not because they felt bad for the Snow Elves, or that they were related species especially given that the Dwarves don’t have or believe in emotions.

I HAVE A THEORY!!! The Dwemer blinded the Snow Elves so that they would become more attuned/sensitive to sound. This heightened sense of hearing, which Flamer DO have, would help them hear sounds that the Dwemer cannot distinguish. So, many Falmer could have ended up as assistants in the tonal processes of the Dwemer.

The snow elves/Falmer were blinded by centuries of abuse at the hands of the dwemer, they tore out their eyes and tortured their senses. The Dwemer wanted a slave race to test their experiments on, but thats what Behtesda wanted to make you think. But I think they may have tried experiments on the Falmer, and then tried them on themselves. And the etherium also makes tones if you read the flavor text on atheric items. Also the daedra and the dwarves share some of the same ideals and looks as the daedric princes. So, it is possible that the dwemer became part of the daedra.

Since i don't recall any vanilla spell that summon dwemer spheres I will assume you are talking about the Artherial Staff. Did you noticed you can only summon animaculum if you have some dwemer components in your inventory? Not only they are a requirement, they disappear for the duration of the summon and return when it is dismissed. To me that look like the super duper special staff made from the godly substance that caused a secret war doesn't conjure creatures from Oblivion, it construct fully functional machines from their broken components.

I dream of an ES game where the Dwemer begin an invasion of Tamriel. Where they bring back their dormant cities to full power and slowly sneak back home with a goal of total control. I'd imagine the Thalmer would try to make an alliance with them being elves but the Dwemer would ultimately betray them with little empathy. The Dominion would collapse and it'd be like Oblivion in a way I guess, just mass chaos as the dwarves grew stronger. I do agree mysteries are great to keep going. If you reveal it all then there's little wonder left. I also think that you can reveal secrets but create more secrets by doing so. Dwemer living in a future where they're considered backwater elves would be kharmic justice though, a funny end to their superiority complex. Maybe the Psijics would learn of their fate some day or an elder scroll burns the truth into someone's eyes.

I figured that the blindness inflicted by the Dwemer was just a side effect of their true motive: the souls of the Falmer. Dwemer constructs often drop soul gems, and obtaining black soul gems often requires dangerous bargains with the Ideal Masters. I figured the Dwemer wanted to use the Falmer as a fuel source. Alternatively, they wanted to study the gradual decay of their souls from black to white so they could use the data to evolve their own souls.

I feel as though the Falmer most likely are mostly, if not only, found in Dwarven Ruins because they were used as slaves, as is mentioned in the game a few times. They were probably used to help carve out tunnels and rooms for their various purposes. Along with that, it's possible they were used as test subjects for the Dwarven Automata.

I think they blinded snow elves to prove a point that gods can not save them and their "blind" devotion is not going to help them. A middle finger to god they worshiped and also so they can not learn about their secrets, machines, dwemer metal etc... I had a similar thought. Alduin was banished to another time using the Elder Scroll you find in the main story of Skyrim, and the Dwemer had a Lexicon that was capable of reading Elder Scrolls. The Elder Scrolls, from what I understand, are pieces of reality, so I don’t think the Dwemer could have just “made” one. Maybe they work using tonal magic. Maybe the Lexicon was a tonal machine made to read one, which the Dwemer learned from to send themselves to another time.

I always liked to think that the Dwemer were inter-dimensional, utilising the elder scrolls to access knowledge that allowed them to become so technologically advanced. It could also be that due to constant meddling with the scrolls that they were accidentally all transported to another dimension/time period with no way to return. It was a fun theory for me. Haven’t seen anyone mention this, but to further support your “Spectre” theory, in Morrowind you can go into the Dwemer ruins and actually encounter Dwemer Spectres, the ghosts of the dead Dwemer. They even drop ectoplasm when you kill them like the ghosts in Skyrim. It would be interesting to know more about ghosts/spectres and all that, because I think whatever plane these spectres pertain to that’s where the Dwemer are likely to be. Or maybe they met Dr Strange and he taught them how to get to the Astral Plane or something I don’t know. At this point, who knows.

I hate this common misconception (I suppose it could be true in TES, but it's certainly not in our world). Your senses don't get stronger when you lose one; it only seems that way when one of your more prominent senses is taken away and you're forced to rely on the others. It's like if I lose my hearing, my eyes aren't going to suddenly improve, but I would become more visually observant, as I would need to compensate for my lack of hearing (through lip reading and minding my surroundings more, et c.) to continue to live in a similar way as I do now. It's the same thing for losing your sight; your hearing doesn't instantly improve, your hearing improves because now you have no choice but to rely on it for the vast majority of your sensory information (or you just start to rely on another person, or guide dog, instead). All of that being said, I still like your idea and it does still make sense (but the reason for their increased sensitivity to sound would come from necessity, not some biological buff in response to losing their sight, unless it's Dwemer magic, hah) to have blind people work on audio-based technologies; if this was true, I'd be inclined to agree with you, or suggest that the Dwemer may have blinded them to prevent the Snow Elves from easily using the powerful tonal technology of the Dwemer against them. Or maybe, because tonal architecture is based on sound, the Snow Elves would be more susceptible to it when blind? To be controlled or whatnot.

I think that Arniel's experiment disproves the Oblivion theory, but not completely. Battlespire was a thing, and it was built by far less advanced Imperials. Yagrum is likely not the only one who was in the realm at the time, so it's a pretty likely possibility that a splinter clan of the Dwarves lives in Oblivion, escaping the fate of their Mundus tied bretheren. Artifacts prove it, and even in Morrowind, lower level Dremora were likely to be equipped with Dwarven weaponry.

Here's an intresting detail Nate forgot to mention. The dwemer, clearly, made experiments on an elder scroll, specifically, the dragon scroll. We know this due to the fact that the dragon scroll is found within the depths of black reach. Interestingly enough, the Dwemer either stole this scroll from the nords, or loaned it to them to defeat Alduin. Considering that the destruction of the world was at stake, the Dwemer might have aided the nords in destroying Alduin. If Alduin is a factor at all in this, and the fact that Alduin technically is a god of destruction, then the Dwemer might not have disappeared unexpectedly, but rather been preparing to flee since Alduin might want to destroy them for aiding in his disappearance.

The Dwemer didn’t disappear until long after alduin was cast to the future. The Dwemer all disappeared when Kagrenak used his tools on the heart of Lorkhan during the battle of red mountain in year 700 of the 1st era. It’s much more likely that this opened them up to Chim and since the Dwemer are a race of scientists and engineers they probably wouldn’t have been able to comprehend that they don’t actually exist and are a part of a dream from the godhead and they zero summed and seized to exist as a result.

Also the reason that they had used the heart at that specific time was because the Chimer were closing in on the area where the Numidium was kept. It’s also likely that the Dwemer were doing other experiments when it comes to dragons if they were even worried at all because in black reach there’s a tonal bell you can hit that summons a dragon for you to fight. Also the elder scrolls contain different knowledge depending on who reads them so the Dwemer owning the dragon scroll is most likely unrelated to alduin.

Alduin was going to re-enslave Skyrim… Parthanax even states that he had gone rouge and instead of doing what he was created for he decided to become a king of sorts over Skyrim. The Dwemer being underground were likely unaffected by Alduin. The goal of the Dragonborn and Akatosh are to set the end of nirn in motion so that the next cycle can begin.

I really like the time travel theory because it's something that is proven to be possible. And not only is it possible, the dwemer had the equipment to do it. The nords used the Dragon Scroll to launch Alduin forward in time by reading it. In Skyrim, it just so happens we find that very same Elder Scroll in a giant machine made for ...reading Elder Scrolls. Is it so crazy to assume the dwemer found some way to manipulate the scroll into affecting a larger group? They achieved a great deal with tonal manipulation, and perhaps that heart of a god may have served some purpose as well. I have a feeling its involved.

For all we know, they pissed of the Divines for striking the heart of one of their fallen fellow deity. So pissed that the Divines punished them by letting the Daedric’s use them as they pleased. That explains the Daedric Artifacts that are Dwemer based, and why we can summon Dwemer Automations from places in Oblivion. Or it could be that they stuck themselves in another plane of existence that not even the Divines can locate, or that the soul gems inside the Dwemer Automations are filled with their souls meaning the Dwemer are dead, but alive as their own creations. The Dwemer living as their own creation is an interesting idea, but I gave it some thoughts and I think its not possible. Because in the video, when he translated the plank about the Dwemer accepting the Elves in exchange of their eye sight, it said they sent their machines to fight off the humans while they sheltered the elves. If their creations needed Dwemer souls to function, then they wouldn't have been able to send them to war; would they? @@egostiic4183 To my knowledge they didn’t really worship gods, they definitely had to of known they existed but really instead focused on their own abilities
