Didn't mention in the review but it has unlocks that are added to the game as you unlock achievements and some of them can be a bit... wiki requiring. Most achievements can be done on any difficulty (it has 5 difficulties) however so it's still pretty accessible.

Do they offer more gameplay content? Or are they like permanent bonuses that give your character a leg up in subsequent runs? One of the things I appreciate in the roguelike games is out of run character and global story progression, because it helps you feel like you achieved something even if you lose most of the normal stuff gained in a run.

@@Kia044 Yes and no, it's more similar to Binding of Isaac where you are adding things to the randomizer pool. Some of these items are really good and worth it but others aren't but I think more RNG means more fun game since that means runs can surprise you more

That art style brings me back to playing adventure and RPG games on school macs. Half of them were student projects. Some great games in there. We used COCOs on iMac G3 and Power Mac G4 computers 🖥

It's worth mentioning that the PC version supports mods. It doesn't support Steam Workshop, at least not yet, but they're out there on other sites. So if you're on the fence about which platform to buy, that's probably the way to go.

I'm glad it finally came out; the early access had a lot of potential but ended up stalled for long enough that people were getting concerned. The final release is missing a bit of polish we were expecting, but because it had the time to build up a fanbase and is quite easy to mod, I expect fan patches for the game to make it much better in the coming year.

Superfun played it to completion in early access already, recommend for ito fans, or those who see that old dejavu/uninvited style. Tutorial was enough to get started, and only was tempted to wiki during a lengthy endgame zone

My first playthrough in release bersion went like this.. School girl covered in ritualistic cursed marks, wearig a cursed demonic mask and wielding a katana, slicing eldritch horrors in half on sheer power of desperation and exposed ribs. Can recommend.

Other fans have discussed that idea a little bit on the game's official discord, but it seems like a game like this might not be a really good fit for a few reasons. This game has a rather specific resolution and aspect ratio that playdate owners seems to think just wouldn't be very good for the small screen on a playdate. And even though the game is advertised and often shown as pure black and white, there are options to upgrade to 2bit, with 4 colors, and a fairly wide variety of 2-4 color palettes to choose from as well. As nice as it would be, at the moment, i just don't think it's on the dev's radar.

@@OnyxAlchemyst That's a good point. The reviewer's main critique was the overwhelming HUD, now imagine it shrunk down onto a tiny GBC sized screen. They'd probably have to convert it into a bunch of different tabs you crank between.

the random encounters that occur between the investigation bits at times feel a bit disjointed from what you're currently doing (randomly decide to take a bath that makes it seem like you're at your own house, when you're supposed to be investigating, or other small inconsistencies, like taking the same random "encounter" bath, despite the old god causing the sludge in the pipes, making you unable to use your own bath to replenish health at your home) it's not a dealbreaker, but it does mess with your immersion at times. still a cool game so far.

The game was meant to be a tabletop card game and retains some of that early influence in the form of mentions of "card packs" and dice rolls, but also the random nature of events and how things don't always seem to line up (getting an event to "unlock" a character as that same character).

I can understand what they were going for, but when all these small focused stories/mysteries keep getting interrupted by stuff that doesn't really seem to connect to the story at hand, it kind of deflates the tension, at least for me. still good overall I'd argue.

Look at the entire screen and all your options before doing anything. So many youtubers missing that large blinking new item/weapon on the top right corner. Sometimes running is your best option. Each character has specialties/weaknesses so focus on a build rather than random improvements. Never waste time on something you don't need to do, DOOM is an annoying way to lose (idk if there's a way to reduce it). Always complete side missions for better mystery endings. Not every failure is a waste of time. LOTS of achievements and each unlocks more content (similar to The Binding of Isaac)

There is a mode where it is only endless encounters, and the normal one where you solve 5 mysteries, at the end of some you get to fight a bad guy or a monster, after finishing the mysteries you can go to the top of the lighthouse to stop the summoning of the old god

OK now that was unexpected. As someone who played a whole bunch of games that looked just like that back in the day, I'm less put off by the monsters themselves and more put off by the fact that they're not drawn in the same pixel-speckled style as the background. It feels kinda like those SNES ports to Steam with new and "improved" character portraits that no longer match the old game's art style. A couple of examples of this done right would be Deja Vu and Transylvania (the old black and white versions, of course). This is still an almost guaranteed purchase for me, but I didn't expect that to throw me off as much as it did.
