We're a music production studio and for our use case single core performance is king. Most of the workloads during production need a lot of single core performance and not much can be multi-threaded. Any channel strip with linked sends will always have to loaded onto a single core. There is just no way around this. To that end our little M1 Mini kind of embarrasses our i7 2020 maxed out iMac 27". We bought the iMac as a sort of bridge (backwards compatibility is pretty important for us) to get us through the transition period to Apple silicon because our 2010 Mac Pro was starting to struggle a bit. After the M1 came out we picked up the Mini just to dip our toe a little but it has blown us away. In some cases it offers an extreme performance bump over the iMac. There's never been this much performance, for music I mean, in this price bracket. Or actually any price bracket really. Great machine.
@PeterJaquesMusic2 жыл бұрын
Agreed, my M1 Macbook Air is almost as powerful as my homebuilt i9-9900k hackintosh, but a) silent and with b) far lower power consumption. The power question is a wash, actually, since the M1 has better single-core performance, but the i9 has better multi-core. I'm at the point where I'm basically transitioning my whole studio (Pro Tools & Ableton) to the Air. Even when I'm only at my desk, there's just no disadvantage to using the Air, even with Pro Tools running under Rosetta. It handles all my sessions and (almost) all my plugins perfectly. JUST DON'T INSTALL MONTEREY, which seems to be a plugin assassin, so far.

Hey I'm thinking about buying one for my studio too. I've already got a m1 air and lovin it but I feel it could be stressed out with big big project. I'm wondering about how a mini can handle "heavy" rec sessions (like 16 mic min simultaneously), or heavy "mixing" sessions (100 tracks at least, with around 300 plug-ins). Do you tend to record with m1 mini ? is it stable ? thanks !
@PeterJaquesMusic2 жыл бұрын
@@simoncortes8196 the performance of the m1 air and the m1 mini is basically identical, assuming you have the same amount of RAM. In extreme cases the mini might have 5% better performance due to having a cooling fan, but by all accounts it’s basically the same computer. If you want an upgrade from the M1 Air, you’ll need to go for an M1 Pro or Max.
@Screaming-Trees2 жыл бұрын
@@simoncortes8196 Hey Simon. You really don't need the Mini if you already have the M1 Air. The performance will be about the same. Video guys maybe because their workloads are sometimes sustained for hours and a bit of active cooling might help there but our type of use-case is stop/go/stop/go. Our Mini doesn't have an issue with a 100 tracks and 300 plugins but I'm willing to bet that neither will your Air. We got the Mini for production yes, so recording mainly where you need to drop the buffer as low as you can. What DAW are you guys using? In any case why not try with your Air and see how it fares? Worst that can happen is you'll find out that it can't quite manage. I doubt that though. The Air will take your 16 tracks of simultaneous audio and ask for a 100 more probably. Once the buffer goes up it'll do even better. Some DAWs are better than others but I saw guys run up a 85 track session in Pro Tools via Rosetta and about 300 plugins and the M1 wasn't sweating. Native ARM performance will be better still. Yeah in summary I doubt you need the Mini.

I had the M1 Mac mini, since February; best computer I ever owned. But my late-2013 MacBook Pro is gonna need a change with my music production, DJ and content creation endeavors, especially since it’ll be considered “obsolete” by Apple next year, and I think the base model M1 MBP with 1TB of space will do me, and then I may use the Mac mini as a file server for my music. As ever, great overview and I totally agree that the gap between the high-end Intel chips and the standard M1 chip is more significant than that between the M1 and the M1 Pro/Max for most. I know there’s this interesting perception that the standard M1 is not “professional” enough, especially when it runs rings around Intel’s current line. Unless you’re a professional filmmaker or a developer requiring constant and sustained performance, the standard M1 should get years of mileage for pros while keeping costs low, full stop. This year I went from a Windows 10 machine - after over 30 years of Microsoft OS use - to a Mac Mini M1 (8Gb/512 Gb) and soon after also bought a MacBook Air (8 Gb/512 Gb), because the MacMini was so affordable in price, after holding back because of the earlier 'expensive' Apple Mac hardware. I already had Iphones and Ipads for some years and, I 'only' do browsing, email, and work stuff (I teach highschool History). The advantage for me is the totally seamless handoff via Icloud between the two machines. No more copying files from one Windows machine to another, when creating the heavy duty work on my MacMini at home, I can used those files at school on my MacBook Air, which is also 'light' enough to be carried around in my school bag. As the combined price (including the transport fees and import duties as I live on a Caribbean island) for those two was even under the basic price of the new MacBook Pro base model, I will not go for that one. So far, I am a happy about my change to Apple.

Only negative is the lack of an SD slot to get photos off of my camera. (Memo to Apple: put it on the FRONT of the machine!) External drive (via USB-C) is plenty fast for my purposes. I figure I'm future-proofed for a solid 5-10 years with this thing, which makes the cost of ownership insignificant - fact, it'll probably more than pay for itself in lowered electricity bills. What killed the MBP 14 for me was the weight. I thought I'd pull it off but it's simply too heavy to carry it around all the time. I went back to the 16 GB M1 Air. The MBP is a fantastic device but the 1.6 kg kill the portability part for me and when I'm not moving it, it's mostly docked so I don't really reap the benefits of the display, keyboard, speakers and so on. The performance is great but mostly it's a matter of how you are using it. If I render a video, I don't really care if it takes 50 or 80 minutes. If I am programming and have to compile code every few minutes and I need 3 minutes vs 5 minutes, it'll make a difference though.

I’m wondering if the diminutive Mini name turns people off also ~ “Pro” vs "iMac" vs “Air” vs “Mini” ~ though there are arguments all round. (If any are considering the Air vs Mini, those dongle costs could add up if you need a few, and any need replacing in time.) “Brought to you by another TED Tech Talk: For the Real TED Talks!”

I never do need an old style laptop… Nearly everything could be done on an Ipad. For anything else, There are passive, silent PCs with Ryzen 4750g and Intel i5-8259u. Unfortunately I had to send back my Mac Mini M1, because of too many problems and I was unsatisfied. The full USB was not achieved, UHD support was a mess, no Ipad pro Apps were usable, although promised.

6:44 That really depends on the person using it. For me, the Mac Mini IO sucks so bad. No SD card slot and just two Type C ports with lackluster display support is just disappointing. This sounds nuts, but I'll take the MBP 14" IO all day. I need the SD card slot with more Type C ports, and I hate dongles.

Hell they had a $200.00 US off sale on the Mac Mini... I used it to get the 16 and 10gb...As I use Sabent 1 TB External drive.....So for $899.00 best deal going. Now looking for the LG Ultra Fine 27" to go on sale....

My fully configured (except having only 2TB memory)14" MacBook Pro M1 Max is really fast. A great computer along with 2 32" monitors. I do photography, video editing, 3D modeling, and 3D simulation. BUT ... my biggest issue is that, at this time, I have some software that will not run under Monterey. A new operating system AND the deployment of new chips was a big step. It will take some time to address minor (and sometimes major) bugs.

Doing video work, I connect my mid-2015 MBP to an external TV via HDMI and have found a consistent 4-frame delay in the video. Is there any such delay with the M1 MBP Max?
@russellschundler65592 жыл бұрын
@@jp-edit Not that I'm aware. Speed is fantastic. At issue is the need to workout bugs with selective software and Monterey.

I think the next version of the mini will be a whole new design and not called a mini. Apple kept the MacBook Air and 13" MacBook Pro with M1. I can see the mini not being changed but a new 'PRO' model coming out.

Why couldn't you have published this 2 weeks ago???? Lol. I'm PC convert. Purchased a MBA for my wife, and loved the performance over my gaming PC used mainly for photos and some video editing. I wan going to buy the Mini...but then they announced M1Pro/Max and I was like If I'm going to invest into this,..I may as well jump into it all in! I can tell you that my Davinci Exports are in the seconds Vs in the minutes for the exact same video between my MBP and the PC. Probably not much difference between the MBA and MBP. I would probably would have been just fine with the Mini which was the plan all along, but decided to give myself a little more future proofing and portability (then again that's why I got the MBA in the first place :D) But I have to say, I was surprised to hear the fans spin up on my MBP when importing photos into LR and creating previews. They were not loud...nothing like the helicopter of my Dell 5310 from work, but audible non the less. So far the only place I 've been able to see a significant load on the MBP is on photo imports, more so than exports. Granted I import hundreds at a time, and export a handful at a time. Either way, it obligates my PC on imports. For reference purposes: MBP 14" 16gb/1TB 10C/16G PC Rizen 1700, 1050ti. 32Gb, 500gb NVMe, 750 SSD, and 8TB HDD.

Yes, yes, yes. EXCEPT - once again - like everyone else - you've glossed over the fact that the M1 MacMini can support only one external Thunderbolt display (plus one HDMI). If you need 2 external displays - you'll need a M1 MBPro. ALSO - most people already have external displays, keyboards, and mice - so there is no need to add in those prices to the M1 MacMini. For $589 - M1 MacMini is hands down a great value. BUT - I'll be upgrading to the M1Pro MacMini the day it comes out - because I REALLY want dual displays.
