Hi. Yes, It`s correct. The lathe is not built with sufficient isolation on rotor and stator in motor so it will probably trip your Earth protection switch. In Norway its mandatory with 30mA switch. But keep it like that, and make sure to Earth the lathe property. Run a dedicated Earth wire directly to the switch panel from good grobunn point on the lathe. Make sure the grounding cable is at least the same diameter as the power cable to the lathe. Then you will mittigate the danger of getting voltage from the lathe. Also, check the cables on the motor. I would also concidered to replaced wire by wire on the late. Cheap and great investment. After that you cam try it with the Earth protector again. Also you can install a dedicated 100mA switch just for the lathe breaker. Best regards from Norway (Electrical automation engineer)

The closest lever to the spindle chuck is for spindle speed 1:1 - neutral - 1:8. I always suggest to put it in neutral when you are touching the chuck or the part as the spindle switch safety feature is not working anymore. Next ones to the left are for threading pitch (the short one) 1:1 - 1x8 and the other is for threading/feed reverse. The pull out knob under the spindle chuck is for threading screw. The other ones I think is easy to find out.

You have 30mA fault protector. Usually the old motors starts to leak to the ground when they get old because the windings insulation melts ans turns to dust. You can test it take the cable wich goes to motor and unhookit from motor and then try to start it if it still pops propably its the wiring on the machine. With multimeter u can only test motor if its fully shorted. U need special multimeter which feeds voltage to test the insulation on motor. But u can try with 300mA fault protector if u are scared about if its leaking into machine. Also greetins from finland! Enjoying your videos! Great job !

well done, another success and good viewing for us! Big old electric motors often have a small leakage to earth (damp insulation, insulation breaks etc) and will often trip the domestic 30mA RCD. You could try a higher rating but otherwise I am sure all will be well unless you burn out the motor or a cable wears through somewhere! You will soon learn the lathe controls. Make sure you check the gearbox oil and probably check headsock run-out (adjust bearings) plus adjust the saddle and cross-slide gib strips (remove slack due to wear in the slides). The 'water pump' you mention is called a Sud's pump. It is used to pump emulsified oil to act as cutting coolant/lubricant. One needs this for heavier cuts but you can use hand applied coolant via a brush for lighter cuts. A guard and slash-back will be useful if using coolant - it can spray everywhere! Thats a big powerful lathe so take it easy and learn the basics before performing making big chips (swarf). Have fun!

OMG sees 2 hours of video uploaded ...clicks the thumbs up before i watch because i know its going to be good Im ony 20 mins in but... As an ex machinist you want at least 2 foot of space clearance all around the lathe , possibly if you dont have the room at chuck end you can make a hole in the wall to take overlength material You dont usually use that type of air hose fixed to wall ....thats usually loose free line The middle long bar above the stop /start handle with the keyway along its length needs to be turning for the auto feed to work

The ground fault circuit breaker is tripping because of the 230V contactors. Since there is no separate neutral for these two (and possibly other) 230V components used in the lathe, the power goes back thru ground wire thus tripping the breaker.
@Ants_Pants
@Ants_Pants Жыл бұрын
I removed the 230v setup from the lathe and figured out that it still trips. Most likely the breaker is too sensitive for this motor
@StaRkiJs
@StaRkiJs Жыл бұрын
As far as I can see from the video - you have 400V volts at the main switch and the contactor inputs and the breaker does not trip. When you manually with screwdriver push in the contactor, motor runs and it didn't seem to trip the breaker (although this one is hard to tell from video) if so then motor itself is fine also. However, the second you operate the lathe forward/reverse lever, you send one phase to one (forward or reverse) of the contactors coil (looks like one has black, the other has yellow wire). The coil is rated for 230V so the other end in this case is connected to the machine chassis/ground thus making a current leak to earth and tripping the breaker.

4 wires in 3 phase cable means that it doesnt have seperate N and PE and that it uses PEN. PEN is combination of N and PE (neutral and ground). That fifth "wire" on cable is for pulling sheating off cable so you dont break your nails. On fault protection thingie (that thing with lever and test button) neutral always goes on right side (its marked with N), also maybe there is fault on lathe so it tripping other fault protection thingie.380v rating on lathe is rating for lathe, but it will work on 400v. Minimum and maximum 3 phase voltage is from 380-410v. I think that you should do complete rewire on lathe beacuse it looks too dangerous to be even used. Your friend was right about using lathe thru fuse only but wrong too. Fault protection thingie saves you from getting hit by electricity and beacuse lathe is all metal its better to use it.

Andris, having the tools that are used to make the tools is a big advantage. I have a coworker that is a machinist… he can do amazing things on the lathe - and has even shown me how a lathe can be used as a milling machine. That machine and tooling you have is worth a pile of moola - you’ve got yourself a good deal. Some of those Morse taper drill bolts are worth big money.

The one caution I can give you is to *never* change any of those levers while the spindle is still spinning because the gear trains in lathes don't have any clutches or syncro's, so you will grind the gears in the headstock and damage them, and I'm sure they are not replaceable these days. The carriage of the lathe moves side-to-side in two ways. One way is for regular cutting and the other is for making threads. It only moves front-to-back for regular cutting. There are two shafts that come from the headstock (with all the levers on it, located on the left hand end of the lathe), go through the apron of the carriage (where the big hand wheel is) and out to the end of the lathe (where the tailstock is). When you set the levers on the headstock in different combinations it makes the shafts rotate at different speeds depending on what you want to do. The lower shaft with the key-slot in it is most likely for regular cutting. The upper one should be heavily threaded and is for making threads. The keyed shaft drives gears in the carriage that make it move from side-to-side and front-to-back. The threaded shaft drives the very precise side-to-side thread making motion. The lever with the Roman numerals on it is probably to select the speed range for either the regular cutting shaft or both shafts. The middle lever might be forward and reverse (if it has three positions then it might have neutral as well), and the one with two handles might be the fine speed adjustment or the thread selection lever (or both, depending on which shaft you engage with to drive the carriage). The two levers at the bottom of the headstock are to change the spindle speed, as you already found out. You really will need the manual to positively figure out which those levers does what. I wonder what that knob sticking out the side near the lever with the Roman Numerals does. That could be used to engage and disengage the shafts. Try pulling it out and then engaging the spindle to see if those shafts start rotating. If so, then flip the lever on the carriage up and see if the carriage moves. Get ready to flip the lever back down in case it moves quickly! It could crash into the chuck or the tailstock! Once you get the manual it should explain things better. I hope you can read Russian!

It would be a good idea but you don’t want that on a metal lathe because most of the time you run the carriage of the lathe very slowly to get a good surface finish and it would be really, really boring to have to stand there on a switch when you could be doing something else in the shop while it was cutting.

Hello Ants, The lathe must be set up properly on steel screws and washers so that the machine is level. I would also recommend an emergency stop switch so that you can quickly turn off the power from the machine in an emergency. In order for the machine carriage to move, the middle shaft at the front must rotate when the machine chuck rotates. So you have to calmly figure out which of the levers on the left side is responsible for it. The lever at the bottom left with the scale looks as if it is there to adjust thread pitches. Unfortunately I don't know the Russian type but the old German lathes aren't much different either. It is also important that you always keep the surfaces where the slides run on very clean and always have a light film of oil on them. The machine will thank you. If you have time, I would also change the oil and, if I have a lot of time, change the cables bit by bit. It's a shame that you live too far away, otherwise I would be very happy to help you with that Greetings from Berlin

1:12:23 Because of the cross patterned weave of the reinforcement in the hose, when there is pressure inside, it will expand radially, and contract lengthwise. Like a scissor lift. Not so great for wall mount applications. But very good for building mechanical muscels. :)

Imo, you need to build a small counterbalance for the bobcat. Btw, the lathe will come in handy if you need to make your own bearing/bushing sleeves. And just because it's a metal lathe, doesn't mean you can't also use it to cut plastic or wood. One more thing... I have a friend that had to run a 220v power cable out to his shed (around 40 feet). He used a regular chainsaw (the longest one he owned) to help cut out a slender trench in the dirt. Since the finished trench was around the same size as the outdoor conduit tubing he was using, backfilling the trench with dirt was a piece of cake. Cutting through roots was also very easy. Some contractors in my area use this method to cut trenches for in-ground sprinkler systems and backyard lighting.

I don't think this will work for him since he has a lot of rocks in the ground. But for sandy and earthy soil that sounds like a great idea!

That bobcat is designed to lift some weight, and it already has the counterweight that it needs for this. If you add more weight, you risk damaging the hydraulics (bent cylinder rods are not fun, and expensive) or you even bend or break the frame or boom. If your bobcat can't handle the job, you really just need a bigger one.
@Rossfab
@Rossfab Жыл бұрын
@@ProtonOne11 I don’t see the weight kit on his bobcat. (Bobcat sells one) A properly working hydraulic lift circuit will go over relief before bending rods. Every bent rod/damaged cylinder I’ve replaced has been due to shock load pushing stumps/side loading the lift arms.

The russian bob sled team would be proud to see how that lathe sled moved on the wooden skis into the garage. Looking foward to see you figuring out all the cutting tools, feeds and speeds. Hope the main spindle bearings are still somewhat OK, or that you find out if you can adjust the bearing play on these old machines.

Highly recommend you build a ladder frame under the lathe with heavy duty casters and threaded resting feet. You will need to access the back of the lathe upon occasion and by pulling up the jacking feet (which also level the machine) you are on the casters and can more easily move it as needed. Looked like that electrical enclosure was accessed from both sides and knowing engineers that means some of the back stuff will be hard to get to unless you can go in from either side. Also I find at six feet tall (I thought I once heard you mention you were that or a little more) a three or four inch lift ( I used three by three heavy wall square tubing for mine) worked out at a nice working height for my lathe. If I had put mine directly on the floor years ago my back would be in full revolt today! Entirely optional but that ladder rack also allowed me to built a set of full extension drawers in a cabinet that fit right between the lathes pedestals for full use of the space. Always needed in a small shop. I used to have a pretty big shop, but as I filled it with tools it became a pretty small shop! Kind of a subset of Murphy's Law, I guess!!

Hi Ants, nice video! We have a lathe a its incredible how much we use it. It definitely saves a lot of trips to town. Especially when you own heavy equipment it makes owning a lathe invaluable . My only advice is to learn as much as you can about it before you start using it. In no time at all you will be completely comfortable using it and making things that will shock your own self!!

I've also had problems with hose clamps . I found wot works for me is get a piece of tube around the same width as the pipe your clamping cut along the length of it then slide it on your pipe squeeze it on then put a good quality clamp over both the tube & the pipe. I've not had any leaks since, just a thought, mine was on plastic water pipe with around 30 psi but I'm pretty sure it'll take alot more pressure than that ...

If the cable ties pull the nail out, then swap the nail for a screw. You should inject a flexible glue into the cracks in the wall. Or even silicone will do. Just to tie it all together and keep water out so ice doesn't form and crack further.

I had the exact same problem with my old metal lathe and the RCD. I ran very large, redundant earths to the frame of the lathe in a few spots, to ensure that if there was ever a short somewhere, I would not be the lowest resistance path to ground.

To be on the safe side, maybe blow a few bucks and try a _separate_ 100 or 300 mA RCD for the lathe. Mains side L1 - T2, L2 - T4, L3 - T6, N - T8/N, load side neutral (T7/N) left unconnected as per Eaton's data sheet for your specific setup.

Trip probably goes off because of the old motor having leakage to ground. The trips are sensitive and an old motor can have 10-50 ma (or more) leakage to ground. You have earthed the lathe so it should be safe to use. Anyway, great content as always. Thanks
