In this video, I react for the first time to Queen performing ‘Somebody To Love’ live in Montreal. In this video, I analyse their amazing performance, explain and demonstrate Freddie Mercury’s vocal techniques and I'll tell you what I think made it so great. Queen are one of the biggest bands of all time and they have a special place in my heart!

My cousin saw Queen in 82 and sat 2 rows from the front. At the end of the concert Freedie brought out a bouquet of roses, pulled out one at a time, kissed the rose then tossed it into the audience. She caught one, preserved it and still has it today.

I'm a metalhead normally, but there is simply no denying that Queen is the greatest band of all time, and Freddie is the greatest singer/frontman. There is not even a slight competition in the frontman part. There are loads of fantastic bands, but Queen is just the complete package of perfection, and unbeatable live.

Couldn't have said it better. Freddie Mercury was born to be the ultimate rockstar. A combination of talent, training and sheer musical genious that cannot be replicated. Also, the fact that the rest of the band, Roger, Brian and John are also legendary tier with their instruments AND singing is amazing. These exceptional people happened to find each other and combine their talent to give mankind a gift. In 100 years and beyond people will still listen to Queen.

Thank you for recognizing Roger and John. When you have a talent and personality as larger than Life as Freddie's, it takes some effort to really appreciate the still amazing talents of the rest of the band. Sir Brian, of course, receives plenty of deserved attention, but I've always felt Roger and John don't get near enough respect. They are a super group, through and through.

I've watched many other vocal coaches reacting to & analysing vocal performances on KZbin, but no one I've seen so far is capable of doing such detailed and complete analyses like you do. With your powers of observation you're able to bring up and focus on small details and nuances most people would simply overlook. Your wit, musical sensibility, humour and enthusiasm make for a treat of a package. And no matter how much you may geek over some aspect of a performance, you never do so in a superficial, annoying or boring way. You're a joy to watch and listen. Keep up the amazing work! A note to watch when you review this... the second time Freddie moves to the audience and Roger is playing the drums hard, watch as Freddie sees Brian walking to the back to tend to his guitar. It is so seamless, most miss it. Freddie works the audience until he looks back again to see Brian coming back to the front of the stage and then moves forward with the song. All, without any fuss, do their parts. John rocks the bass during that time and Roger keeps them going and shifts when Brian steps back up to the mic. It is this peek into their professionalism that moves me to tears. Regarding Roger Taylor doing solo projects, he did! His latest Live album is gorgeous: _The Outsider Tour Live_ - do check it out! And yes, I saw Queen live in 1978... the Jazz Tour. It was incredible. I am sure the stadium (that doesn't exist anymore) is still resonating with a _stomp stomp clap_ that started 30 minutes before the show even began.

While Live Aid was their best set ever, I think this is their best performance of just one song. When you talked about connecting with the audience that was Freddy's best talent, he was a showman. Roger is great in this, Brian is always great, John is steady and gives them the bass lines they need, but the starting point is always Freddy and his talent and presence. Great reaction, everyone should hear this version of the song at least once in their life, this is about a perfect as you can get.

I was so very fortunate to attend several of their concerts in different parts of the world in the mid 80's...This band were the perfect storm, and Freddie was the God with pockets full of fairy dust, who ensured each and every ticket holder experienced the absolute time of their lives. John's songs were among the most popular in the USA, apparently. From something I read a few years back Queen usually didn't do the verse, chorus, verse, chorus structure that was seen as essential in the US in the 70s and 80s, so they were dismissed as unfeasible, commercially speaking, by American record producers (I mean God forbid they try anything different!) John's songs conformed more to the recognised, commercially viable, structure that the American music industry was used to, so his songs tended to do well in that market, "Another One Bites the Dust" being the prime example.

I love your infectious enthusiasm for this performance. Roger Taylor could easily be the lead singer in any band, but with Queen the embarrassment of riches is such that he doesn't need to be, he can drum and do backing vocals. For me this is one of their best live performances, so good it puts many other groups to shame, because they all do it from the heart. Thank you so much for reacting to this. 😊

I cried watching this the first time as well. It's so emotionally overwhelming. I am also obsessed with Roger's voice. He did solo projects since 1977 and had his own band called The Cross as well. His voice was an integral part of the Queen sound, as was each of the band member's talents. Under Pressure Live at Montreal or Wembley showcase the duet of Freddie and Roger's voices. Any of the early Queen songs like My Fairy King,Seven Seas of Rhye, Lap of the Gods, '39, Bohemian Rhapsody, More of that Jazz, etc. Roger made them sound like no other band. I saw Queen in 1977 on the Day at the Races tour. I have seen most big rock bands and it was my favourite concert.. Queen loves their fans and you feel that watching them. Freddie threw flowers to the audience during the encore and told us how much fun they were having. Freddie was incredibly charismatic. When he was on stage you couldn't take your eyes off him. One of my favourite songs was '39 because they all came to the front of the stage and Roger sang those ethereal high notes. They truly worked as one. The early concerts like Rainbow 1974 and Hammersmith Odeon 1975 are incredible fun to watch if you haven't seen them. Any Queen live is pretty special. Loved your reaction!

How good he is at feeding the audience really shows when you watch the Live Aid performance. It was a hot day with a lot of performers, and Queen was on the downslide as a "has-been" group at the time, but as soon as they took the stage he took control and within minutes they were quite literally eating from the palm of his hand. Created the most memorable performance of the entire concert, and made everyone remember just how good Queen was.

NO ONE can sing like Freddie. Freddie's voice is unmatched. Did you know that even scientific study confirms Freddie Mercury had an unparalleled singing voice. That what makes his voice so special was extremely fast vibrato 7.04 Hz and subharmonics. He was able to create several more layers of harmonics than anyone else. Freddie was using a subharmonics by vibrating his ventricular folds, a technique usually found only in Tuvan throat singers. One of the conclusions from the studies was that "Mercury was vibrating something in his throat that even Pavarotti couldn't move and that kind of creates a very typical vocal fingerprint" Check out White queen live at the Odeon 75 Freddie's solo Exercises in free love

We rehearse until we can't, get it wrong." Brian May built his guitar at age 16, his friend John Deacon wired it, before getting his degree in electronics.

So glad to see you talk about Roger Taylor's voice! Queen was a collection of top-tier musicians who all were willing to create the greatest music as a team, and didn't let individual egos block them from achieving greatness. Freddie was an amazing talent, but Roger's voice adds so very much to the mix. And yes, everyone in the band did what was needed to make these magical moments both in the studio and on stage. How I wish I had seen them live. Love your reaction, and you are looking more amazing every time I see you. Thanks for your reactions which have taught me so much I didn't know about vocal technique. 🥰

I saw the Night at the Opera tour in 1977 in Madison Square Garden, New York City. The energy in that stadium was immense and electric. And then Freddie brought us down to tears with Love of My Life. Saw them the following year, Fat Bottom Girls tour. Same venue. They sang Bicycle, then seamlessly transitioned to Fat Bottom Girls. While they sang, about 8 very voluptuous ladies wearing thongs and pasties road their 10-speed bicycles around the stage. Both tours were epic!

I saw Queen in 1976 at the Oakland Coloseum in California. They had several tilting lighting panels. Their performance was way beyond what I had expected. It was by far one of the best performances I have ever seen in my life... Just incredible!!!

I'm two weeks late to comment, but I have to say this: this is the best reaction/analysis I've ever seen. You're reaction was so beautiful to see because your face really said out loud what so many of us feel watching Queen. This is the first video I've watched as a reaction that I wasn't yelling to just let the song/video play. Also, I enjoyed this video so much I've watched it a good half-dozen times. Queen and Freddie are beyond incredible. Seeing your analysis and breakdown of this performance was informative and let me really see the intricacies of each members performance and how they made everything they did just wonderful. Count me as a subscriber.

A long time ago. In a gala... No wait minute. Just a long time ago. As an early teenager, our class went to London. We did it the real Scandinavian way and sailed, clearly. I still have a towel from the ship, I think. And apart from being escorted away by armed police at one point because of a massive angry protest against the Iraq war I think it was. We also went to see a musical of Queen, We Will Rock You. Was the first time I really saw such a thing. And it was pretty amazing. Clearly I am to young. ( Imagine I can still say those words ) to have seen them live. But seeing this show, is something that still feels important to me. Also, about Roger. I remember seeing different things from him. And as a drummer myself ( Well compared to legends like him, I guess it should be called aspiring drummer ) I remember back when I was young and played in bands, trying to play and sing at the same time, partly because of Roger. And it's really not easy. You are doing multiple different rhythms at once, with both hands and both feet. So the singing part is completely different from that, you need to be able to cut the two things of completely. Like using a different computer, because if you use the same it blurs together. I really have extreme respect for drummers who play and sing. It can be a reason I fall for bands. The first sort of unknown band I got in fan mode over was because of a drummer playing and singing called Haste the Day. Music is emotions, it's a journey of memories. Music can take different people on different journeys, because it depends on the emotions and memories of that person. And that is why music is so powerful. It's a connection to things you forgot, or lost. Or a hope to something you wish you had. The right music can touch things you know are there, right inside you. But often just out of reach. I need music every day. And that is why I really enjoy your reactions, because it's easy to see what music means for you to. Thanks for another reaction.

YES!!!! Roger's voice!!!!!! OH, MAN!!!! Reduces me to a drooling mess every time. Queen will always be one of the greatest bands. All of their talents combined perfectly and their chemistry and showmanship just elevated them into a league of their own. I wish I could go back in time for a concert. Such a shame that we lost Freddie way too early. The Live Aid at Wembley is one of my all-time favorite performances. The way Freddie played with the crowd was pure magick!

The first cassette I ever purchased was Queen's "The Game". I eventually bought them all. I have never failed to realize how lucky I was to grow up when Queen still existed and recorded new music. As hard as it is to think about Freddie's pain near the end, I still adore the "Innuendo" album so much. As much as it makes me cry. Thank you for this.

I was lucky enough to get to see Queen in concert in '79. It was an experience like no other I'd had before or since. They did this song, I am happy that they were able capture it on a recording in Montreal just 2 years after I saw them. Also, I agree with you that Rogers voice is amazing, especially that bit at the end, its my favorite part of this performance.

Loli, I saw Queen in 1985 in Sydney, in 2004 with Paul Rodgers in Sydney and in 2014 with Adam Lambert. They weren't as good without Freddie but the way they incorporate old footage of him into the shows is amazing. Adam Lambert is doing a great job as front man now.

Utterly brilliant, the homage you paid to Roger, Brian, and John is often missed by other reactors. All four members of Queen were writers in their own right, and all wrote Number one hits for the band.Superb break down of all the elements that made this such a great live performance. You might want to watch "Save Me" from the same concert, pure Queen brilliance!!

Like most every boy who grew up in the early eighties, I aspired to be a rock star. And some of us got together in basements and garages and did our best to emulate what we saw in those whose music touched us. Here’s something I only now realize. We all had our faves and we all pulled from them in our own stage and vocal presentation. Freddie, and Queen in total, were just so far beyond our reach. Not one of us thought we could ever attain that sort of mastery in our songwriting or vocal delivery. It was beyond comprehension to our teen selves, and we knew it. And so, even when we were fumbling our way along,, sometimes we’d take a minute or two to pretend. We’d put on a Queen song and lip sync and air guitar etc right along with it. It was the only way we could get close to being at that level. And it felt amazing. To this day I get choked up watching this video, as you did, and still cannot really fathom the greatness of this band. Many in the day were very good, a few were great, but I don’t think anyone rose to their level of performance, musicianship and the craft of songwriting in total. No one, for me, has come close since. 😌

Saw Queen and Adam Lambert last year in Belfast, and as Roger Taylor is a hero of mine, his voice hasn't changed. Yes, ok, he's slowed down a bit in his drumming technique, but his vocals on Now I'm Here and In Love it my Car are still magnificent. Was are in the seating directly in line with him, no more than 50 meters away. I finally crossed something off my bucket list.

Yours is one of the most fun reactions I've ever seen! It's lovely when a musician breaks it all down into pieces and puts it all back together again to help people understand just why it is that Queen is so freaking good at it. Queen recorded every single live performance so I hope you'll react to more.

So, while I was too young to go see Queen in 1981 at the forum, this year I got about as close as possible. There is an IMAX movie of the entire concert from 1981 playing at IMAX theatres around Canada and the US. The Montreal Forum was closed down in 1996 and has since been repurposed as an entertainment complex. Part of this is having an IMAX theatre basically where center ice was located. I went and watched this movie at that very theatre with my son. So basically Freddy was being projected exactly where he was standing in 1981. Even through the video screen so manybyears after his death he was still able to control the audience and the whole theatre was singing along with him. It was truly magical.

I was interested to hear you mention the grounding of the feet and lower body to support the higher and/or more powerful notes, since one thing I've noticed about F and R is that they both appear to sing (and R to play drums) with their whole bodies, from the ground up, almost as if they're drawing strength from the earth itself. If you're up for doing more Queen/Freddie live performance analyses, I'd love to hear your take on a couple of earlier songs: White Queen - Live at Hammersmith Odeon, 1975, and You Take My Breath Away - Live at Hyde Park, 1976 - the latter just Freddie alone at the piano, giving a newly written song its first airing, shushing a rowdy crowd with his spellbinding vocal and piano accompaniment; the former peak romanticism, in vaguely Arthurian vein, in a tale (written by Brian) of unrequited love. Of course Freddie throws himself into the story as if he'd lived every agonising moment.
