The country is referred to as America in English and Estados Unidos in Spanish. As someone from Mexico you would be referred to as a Mexican in English. In English someone from the US is referred to as an American. Different words in different languages. Just how it works.

To be fair, most people in general are NOT going to get ALL the 50 states right. I know I would because I'm a lifelong map nut, but your average person would only get half of the states right. Most people would fail trying to identify Wyoming, The Dakotas, Nebraska, Iowa, Idaho, and most of the southern states.

I wish folks would get over the fact that we use words differently in different languages---same words, different meanings. In Standard American English (General American English), the term "American" is a noun which refers to a citizen of the United States of America, or it is also an adjective. Perhaps in Spanish or Portuguese it is different, but hey, you don't see Americans trying to tell speakers of those languages how to use their language. It's like me trying to tell someone in Puerto Rico not to call someone "el negro" because of how it sounds in English, or me telling someone in Germany not to refer to me as "Afroamerikaner" when in their language the prefix "afro" doesn't carry the same connotation that it does in American English. Feel free to say "estadounidense" in Spanish. In both British and American English, however, we say and will continue to use terms such as "American" and "America" when we don't want to take a deep breath and say "a citizen of the United States of America" or "the United States of America." Our language; our rules. I know: how arrogantly American of me, right? Good grief! Get over it. That's all.

I love this kind of videos. Although you should do one with Americans too. I had a work and travel experience for a few months in Pennsylvania. All my workmates were American except for a South African. We use to play who can write down most NAMES of States of the U.S. I usually ended up second with around 35-40. Guess who always won, the South African! With around 40-45. Just to mention, the third place had usually around 20 names at the most... (Our manager played once and he named all 50, but he didn't count on the overall of the game)

además al no entender las cosas todo se confundiría: America quedaría dentro de Norteamerica y Mexico quedaría en Norteamerica pero al sur de America. Tendriamos que cambiarle los nombres a todos los libros, monumentos... es absurdo. El nombre del pais es United States of America, el nombre del continente es America y va a tocar buscar un nombre oficial para los habitantes de EEUU porque los 600 millones de latinoamericanos hemos sido y seremos americanos ante nosotros y ante el mundo. Y eso no nos lo va a robar nadie porque no tiene nada que ver con politica (no le mezclemos otros temas al asunto para distraer a la gente o ponerla a pelear), sino con lógica, historia, honestidad y un elemental sentido de respeto a las convenciones.

GUYS! When people of the USA call themselves Americans, they are not implying, IN ANY WAY, that they are the owners of the continent. It so happened that the first country in the Americas to gain independence was the United States of America, and that the term americans was being used way before any other country gained independence. Please stop being all butt hurt about Americans referring to themselves as that. You look like you have a huge inferiority complex... America is a continent, and it is wrong to refer to the USA as only "America," but when people say American history, or American people, they are referring to that of the U.S. of AMERICA...

+ken crawford I know right! I mean, I'm Mexican but it pisses me off that some of my paisanos have that inferiority complex! Our official name is Estados Unidos Mexicanos, which translate to: "United States of México" and we call ourselves Mexicans, hell, even the rest of the world does it too! That would be unfair! XD The US educational system would never have taught them that Mexico even has states. I'm Mexican, and if it weren't for my year in "Spanish for native speakers", I wouldn't have known either. In fact, I don't even know where Sinaloa is, and I'm from there! I just say "it's.... Around the upper left coast somewhere".

Sinaloa is the kind of long, thin state below Sonora and to the East of Baja California Sur. (Sonora is East of Baja California and below Arizona.)

No offense intended but I have to ask how many of these people grew up in the US? I learned the 50 states and 51 capitals in 5th grade and they were grilled into us. I mean like real tests here is the map fill it in. There's no way after all of that I would ever forget them. But points for recognizing that US geography includes territories like Puerto Rico, you just forget the other five. American Samoa, Guam, US Virgin, Minor, and N. Mariana Islands. (sp?)

I use to know where all the 50 states were and their capitols in elementary but it never retained. Mostly bc it's useless after that. Meanwhile when I visited my family in Guatemala, they knew so much American history I was shook but then again my cousin is a teacher out there but still! Lol But continuously learning our geography and other countries as well is important and helps us from becoming ignorant and egotistical (which we kinda are so we need to I that)

Most English speaking countries teach the 7 continents model while all Spanish speaking countries teach the 6 continents model with the Americas being one continent. Some countries teach a 6 continents model that has Europe and Asia as one continent, while keeping North America and South America.

I worked with a first generation Mexican-American girl in a cost accounting department of a distribution company in California. She had a degree in accounting from a Cal State University. One day she was given a job in Philadelphia to cost out. She came to my desk and quietly asked me what state Philadelphia was in. I told her Pennsylvania and she asked "where is that"? I shit you not. I asked her if she really didn't know what state one of the largest and oldest cities in the country was in and she said "I don't know anything outside of California and Mexico". Apparently her 85% Latino high school in California made sure the students knew about Mexican geography and history even if they didn't teach them about the US.
