I don't know why people here seem to pretent Canon would just drop this stuff out of nowhere. They also have decades of experience making lithography machines and were the market leader until ASML came around with their competitive processes at smaller node sizes. Sure, competition in this space is certainly welcome given that ASML is also kind of the bottleneck for many investments into the semiconductor space. But for that to come into fruition, many more things must go right before this stuff will be adapted (yields must be decent, etc). Also, TSMC is now working with a 3nm process node already, so given that and the time it requires to build a new fab, ASML is still in the lead for min 4 years.

The thing I feel for Nanoimprint is that in the end, you still have to do the mold. I mean, you now have to do one mold per every 100 wafers (spitballing, maybe it is 10K or 10M), which means less time for doing EUV and less machines, but in the end, the "wafer mold" still has to be done. If anything, it feels like companies might need less ASML machines and will be able to replace them by Canon's one. And possibly also use way less energy (which is both a big deal for money in operations, and for reducing climate change effects because of it being an electrointensive industry).
@arantes611 ай бұрын
I guess the mold is made with similar technology that is used to produce the masks used in traditional lithography machines (weird electron-microscope like machines IIRC)
@addygreen891911 ай бұрын
Maybe you have an older machine that is not capable to consistently produce 5nm chips (most of them are not usable). But it could maybe be possible that one out of five molds is usable and than you could use this good mold for hundreds of chips. Maybe a partially faulty mold for multiple chips is also not that bad, if the energy and time for the process is minimal.

@@neruwu I know and unfortunately, this is true. For example, creating user account from Computer Management does not require for creating Security questions, but when creating from the modern Settings, it is mandatory and cannot be skipped. It would be nice if they could remove tracking and advertising. Putting apps on the start menu that you have to pay to use is bad practice. Taking the ad-free games of solitaire, freecell and spider solitaire included with previous versions of windows and putting adverts into them wasn't appreciated either. We're paying customers, and we should be treated as such, not as the product.
@protocetid11 ай бұрын
@@martineyles Not everyone is a paying customer, when people bring up the high price of a Windows license they get a bunch a posts about how to get a cheap key from a seedy reseller (they don't mind selling that key to multiple people BTW) or bypass the DRM. Not that the lack pirates would stop Microsoft from including data harvesting software, for a megacorp no amount of profit is ever enough, they always have to earn more in the next quarter. And when you control a majority of the home computer space why shouldn't you take advantage of it, specially when consumers would rather tolerate A LOT or jump through hoops to stay before they finally go to a competitor like Linux?

@@protocetid I paid full retail for my copy of Windows, and I dislike sponsorships involving these key websites. However, even if most DIY PC builders just hard pirated windows, the DIY space of PCs being such a small part of the market these days, with most people using laptops or other pre-built PCs which come with a genuine OEM licence, which they paid for when they bought their computer. The prevalence of piracy is not a legitimate excuse for treating you paying customers as thieves, or as a product to be sold to advertisers or data-miners.
@protocetid11 ай бұрын
@@martineyles Wasn’t implying you had an illegitimate copy of Windows, and I explicitly said that there could be no piracy and Microsoft would likely spy on you regardless. Brought up the amount of piracy because I guarantee if Microsoft was pressured by consumers or the government to stop spying they would claim (truthfully or not) illegitimate copies are hurting their revenue so much they need to sell your data and display advertisements. Wasn’t trying to justify their actions, I’m telling you about basic economics. Megacorps have no ethics and will do anything for more money if consumers or governments don’t stop them. They don’t care that the anti consumer parts of Windows make you mad, they will push and push to see how much the majority of users will tolerate nonsense that only benefits Microsoft before they leave/stop paying them. What keeps them honest is the fear that too many people will go to their competitors, and if consumers don’t do that and said megacorp controls the market (in other words, the computer industry) then they have the power to make everyone else play on their terms.

Windows 11 looks like a cartoonish version of mac os but does not function like the typical window. The basic functionality of newer versions of windows functions like mac os instead of sticking to what made windows easy to use and understand like the older versions of windows. Alot of older versions of windows were done automatically after you done something and there were permissions that you enabled and it was easy to use and understand. Now windows 11 has turned into mac os where everything has to be done in a certain way manually and it takes multiple steps to do basic tasks since the basic tasks are hidden behind extra menus. I never understood how to use and navigate mac os from the very beginning since it's a learning curve. It took me awhile to figure out how to finally use mac os. With mac os, you have to do everything manually instead of things done automatically for you with options to choose from when you grant the permissions. For example, when you sideload a 3rd party app, you have to look for the 3rd party downloaded folders app and than drag and drop it. For windows, when you sideload a 3rd party app, a window would pop up with permissions and asked you where do you wanna save the app to without looking for a folder and than dragging and dropping the 3rd party app. To uninstall a 3rd party app on mac os, you have to do the steps in reverse order just when the 3rd party app is sideloaded. On windows, you just right click and select uninstall app. I tried to right click on mac os and I tried to do the same thing like windows and the 3rd party app still does not get uninstalled. It took me awhile that I had to figure out that I look for the folder where the 3rd party app was dragged and dropped and than drag and drop the 3rd party app to the recycle bin. Mac os should not have just done the basic right click option to uninstall and delete 3rd party apps that were sideloaded. With mac os there are permissions and windows there are permissions. Windows and android has some similarities when sideloading 3rd party apps and uninstalling and sideloaded apps. The 3rd party apps that I used for windows you have to pay, with android, you can get similar apps that you can sideload. For windows, there are free 7 day or 30 day trials. For android, you can just sideload the apps. I still sideload android apps all the time even with older versions of android since I still use the same apps that were no longer supported or removed from the google play store due to copyright of reasons. The only thing that I like about windows 11 is support for android apps. I'm still trying to figure out how to sideload the google play store on windows 11 instead of using the amazon app store. When I try to sideload the necessary google apps to enable and use the google play store on windows 11, they won't download and install. Nothing happens when I try to sideload any of the necessary google apps on windows 11. I just end up using alternate android app stores to sideload 3rd party apps. Like the modded version of youtube to bypass the ads and have the same features as the paid versions of youtube and I even have the modded version of spotify to bypass the ads on spotify.

For most users, the frequency of Windows 10 updates slowing down after 2025 would be a good reason to keep using it for as long as they can keep the hardware running. Windows 11 and 12 are not faster, the settings are more restricted, and it supports less software. I know absolutely no one looking forward to upgrading a Windows machine, even if it was completely free. When their machine finally dies, they resort to second hand machines to try and postpone the inevitable OS update.
