Regarding commercial labeling of eggs: if you don't have your own chickens or access to local farms, then "pasture-raised" eggs are the most healthy and humane choice. This means that each hen is given 108 square feet of outdoor space to roam and forage during the day. While "cage free" hens are not in cages, they are usually still crammed in a building without outdoor access. "Free range" hens have outdoor access, but there are no requirements for what the outside space is like or how much time they spend there.

You can also check the beautiful "Table de Peutinger", which is a copy from the 13th century of a map from the 1st-4th century. It's one of only two podcasts I watch and listen to regularly, the other one being Normal Not Normal with Oliver and James Phelps. About eggs, the best way to know what you're buying (in Europe - not sure about USA) is to check the code printed on the shell. The 1st number means: 0 = organic egg production , 1 = free-range eggs , 2 = deep litter indoor housing , 3 = cage farming (then there's a 2 letter code for the country of origin - and a code for the exact establishment) Or maybe just don't eat any? And go for tofu :p Anyway. Love you guys!!

The family of french-italian cartographers you were looking for are the Cassinis. They worked for the french kings during the 18th century, who needed maps to have a better idea of the territory they had to defend, first on sea, and then on land. Maps already existed before but they were not as accurate as the Cassinis'ones.

I don't know the origins of mapmaking, but there are two interesting tidbits I am aware of. John Fremont would boil water every night and time it in order to tell his elevation when he was exploring the American west in the 1840s. When I was a tall ship sailor I was told the swivel guns mounted on the stern of my boat, which was based on a 17th century ketch on deck, were used not just for fighting, but when exploring new bays they would systematically fire gunpowder around the bay and time the echo in order to make an accurate chart of the area.

Hi Dom and Billy! Before I became vegan I was eating eggs from two brands called Happy Egg and Vital Egg. These are both “pasture raised eggs” and are the most ethical I’ve found on the market. Vital Egg, for instance, requires its farms to provide 108 square feet of pasture per hen AT MINIMUM! You can find these eggs all over Southern California! Target, Albertsons, Whole Foods, Sprouts etc :)

Here You go. :-) The map of Cassini or map of the Academy is the first topographic and geometric map established of the Kingdom of France as a whole. It was compiled by the Cassini family, mainly César-François Cassini (Cassini III) and his son Jean-Dominique Cassini (Cassini IV) in the 18th century.

BILLY, regarding your interest in the UNDERGROUND, read about Hezekiah's Tunnel in Jerusalem. It was built around 800 or 700 B C. by King Hezekiah to protect Jerusalem's water supply from the Assyrians under King Sennacherib, who were preparing an invasion of Israel and in preparation for a long seige. An inscription in the tunnel states that it was built by starting at either end and meeting in the middle. It's not known how they achieved this (it's 1/3 of a mile long) but it's been postulated that they did it with sound signals from the surface. It's mentioned two times in the Bible that I know of, II Kings 20:20 and II Chronicles 32:30.

I just read "Gone with the Wind," but I've never seen the movie It was my understanding that the maps grew as the story went, because Tolkien wanted to make sure that his timelines were accurate, and he drew out the distances to help him work that out during the revision process.

"Cage free" eggs just means the chickens aren't in cages - but they can still be crowded into large, dark, dirty buildings. "Free range" eggs means the chickens technically have a means of access to the outdoors, although whether they ever actually get to GO outdoors is not a requirement! "Organic" means the chickens were fed an organic diet, with no requirements about their living conditions. "Pasture raised" or "certified humane" are the best labels to look for.

Whoa-boy is this my episode! So much useless info for you! Is the map you’re referring to the Cassini Map? My Dad used to survey for oil maps back in the day when I was really little, like 1980-83/84 and then did some when he was getting his second masters in anthropology when I was in middle school. I only know you have to use special tools and you really need 2 people need to do it, but bonus - I can read topo-maps so that’s cool. You can have chickens in coyote-dense areas! I’m grew up in and returned to the same small farm community in KS after college and was married to a farmer in my 20’s and early 30’s so I’ve got some knowledge of all that stuff. Farm wives were expected to do all that crap so we had classes through the local extension agency. I worked full time, raised two babies on my own, and got a MLS all at the same time, so I wasn’t a typical farmwife, but I still had to take the classes. Anywho, we have coyotes EVERYWHERE - including a couple of dens in town where I live. Cats, small dogs, chickens, rabbits, basically any small animal will get eaten if not locked up. If you have a fenced in chicken yard with their coop and some yard area inside a total enclosure including roof to keep them in at night - our coyotes only only come out at night here - you’ll be ok. To protect them during the day if you let them roam the yard, and to keep predators away from the locked chicken coop, some may find this gross - but if men pee around their yards throughout the day, coyotes won’t come around. I read somewhere it only works with men. Something about how male animals mark their territory and they can tell male humans from female. Might have to research that for my nerdy collection of useless information later. I don’t know how possible this is where you live, but my parents live on a farm and my Dad pees in the farm yard whenever he has to go (unless it’s f*cking freezing) and the coyotes stay out of the yard now. They used to kidnap all the stray cats my parents would take in but not anymore! My Dad does it in different locations around the yard and rotates each time he goes. It’s hilarious - and no, we’re not white trash even though we live in KS and my Dad, and I think BIL, both pee in the farmyard! I read a thing about it long ago because I read everything and told my Dad who tried it out, and bam! It worked! Now, as for eggs themselves - every egg in the grocery store, no matter where they come from, has to be washed due to FDA requirements, hence the need to be refrigerated. I always get (because I was married to a farmer who farmed beef so I know how much crap they put in those animals) organic, antibiotic free, cage free, free range brown eggs if I don’t have any friends who have extra eggs to give. Idk, I just like the brown eggs better. Finally, as a librarian, I also recommend researching the brand and/or farm your eggs are coming from to make sure everything is good, because as you said, they can say just about anything unless it’s Kosher certified or nut free. There may be others, but those are the ones that come to mind. Love your show!
