NEW Prima Watersoluble Oil Pastels Review and Comparison!
I just got the new Prima water soluble oil pastels and wanted to see how similar they were to the other water soluble media I have.
I compared the Prima pastels (retails for $20 for set of 24) to:
Portfolio Water-soluble Oil Pastels (set of 24 retails for $10)
Faber Castell Gelatos and Gel Sticks (Gelatos set of 15 for $25, sets of 4 for $10, gel sticks set of 12 for $13)
Lyra Watercolor Crayons (set of 24 retails for $39)
Caran D'ache Watercolor crayons (set of 30 retail $71)
The Prima water soluble pastels are beautiful high quality pastels. You can get them on sale for $16.99 at Hallmark Scrapbook (affiliate link) hallmarkscrapbo...
BUT...
I honestly do not see the need for these if you already have some of these other coloring media. They are good quality and fun to use but not that much different that what we already have. If you do not have any of the similar media they are a good buy.

Lindsay, been watching you daily for some time now and though I adore water coloring and paper crafting with you, I love the fact you take time to review art supplies with us with such honesty. I don't mind making purchases through your affiliate for such good educational advice. Keep up the good work, darling!

I have a favor to ask of you. I really like you and enjoy your site, so don't think this is negative.When you show things, especially with this oil pastels set, I wish you would hold things still so we can focus on them and be able to really look at them. Sometimes I get almost dizzy trying to see what you're showing us and I can't really get a good look at anything. Thanks.

Oil doesn't evaporate so I would expect the oil sticks to stay fresher longer. Much MUCH longer actually. Plus the primas appear to blend better than anything else in this comparison. Plus they're cheaper than gelatos, plus that gelato tube is hiding a lot of empty space when compared to the longer sticks. I'd get the primas! However, I don't really need those now -- but I do have a need for sparkles which can be applied dry, so just bought some Recollections at Micheals (with a 40% off coupon). Unfortunately, an additional $40 bucks worth of stuff flew into my cart while I was there, LOL. I HAVE to stop spending so much, ohmygoodness.

Thanks for this! I have the portfolios and the Primas are definitely more strongly pigmented, but I also got the Pentel regular oil pastels from Amazon and I'm also not crazy about the greasy texture that the Portfolios have so it doesn't make me want to get the Primas.However, it was nice to see the Caran D'Ache and Lyra side by side because I don't see too much opacity difference between them and Lyra is half the price of Caran D'Ache and they're also thicker sticks so I may want to get the Lyras especially for stamping, and I remember your tomato painting where you combined pencils, paint and Caran D'Ache crayons on Arches and if Lyras are roughly as opaque as Caran D'Ache than I can also use Lyras for more of a fine painting application (though I use "fine" loosely :P)

Thank you for this review- I have a weakness for anything water soluable, so I was definitely wondering about these… I liked seeing your comparison swatches and hearing your thoughts… For me, I far prefer the Lyras to the Caran D’Ache. Maybe my set of CD are wonky, but they don’t release that well. I’ve had them for a few years, but when I compared them to the Lyras, the Lyras were like silky butter. I love that different artists can have such different views of the same materials!

I just found your channel for the first time and really enjoy it. You have the courage to compare items and not worry about the rabid fans of other products. I have always used Prismacolor pencils, (I know very little about watercolor, but I am learning) but recently have had bad luck receiving my pencils in poor condition in the mail. Some break much too often, and one set of the fragile black ones had half of them broken completely in half when I opened them. I know how to properly handle them, so I was not at fault. Being disabled, I have to get them in the mail. Amazon wanted to charge me $12.30 to have a set of 12 sent back, and they only cost me $10.30. Prismacolor contacted me and asked me to leave a 5 star rating on them. I told them my experience, and promised not to give them a bad rating as they were probably damaged in shipping, and they never even returned my email. I found Ohou Preemier (Not sure of spelling) and felt they blended about the same as Prismacolor, although they seem to have a slightly harder lead and don't have the color printed on the pencil. At that time they were half the cost, and the lead did not break.The Prismacolor followers were outraged! How dare I compare their precious pencils to another brand! I see one channel did compare them, calling them good pencils for student grade. I did find a well established artist who agreed to test them as she had never heard of them. I sent her my set of 24 and ordered a set of 72. I am glad you you report what you find. Thank you for that.

they look so similar to stampin ups watercolor crayons, and I love them, what is the huge difference between the oil based water colors and the regular water colors - the oil seems much more opaque, is that the difference? and are they interchangeable with each other?
@Joe_Maysky
@Joe_Maysky 8 жыл бұрын
+Lorri Nichols (Lorri's Bits) If I may jump in, I have the portfolios and they definitely have some sort of oil-water emulsion in them because they have a greasy texture that I'm frankly not crazy about, and to my eye the Primas are more opaque than the Portfolios comparing oil to oil. The watercolor crayons by contrast, to my understanding, have no oil.
@thefrugalcrafter

You can use them interchangeably but the crayons feel more dry and waxy while the primas are more slick and greasy. I prefer the crayons but it is personal preference:)

Lindsay I was wondering....when you use water soluable oil pastels do you need to set aside brushes, water container, ect? I am wondering if the oil leaves any residue in the tools used. Also a tip for you....a good water container....I eat a lot of Chobani yogurt. The label easily peels off and it leaves you with a while container that makes it easy to see if your water is clean...and if you eat the yogurt anyhow...they are free!!!!! I LOVE re-purposing things!!!! Especially trash....and these cups are very nice!!!!!

@Joe Maysky I have the Lyra's and the Neo II (caran d ache), honestly.....I prefer the Neos. They have tons more colors and in my experience, they dissolve a bit more completely. That said, I've had my Lyras for about 12 years, so maybe the Neos will do the same in a few years. I also have the Portfolios, tho I rarely use them. I prefer water based crayons to oil.

Another question.y birthday is n the way and it is a big "zero birthday" so I thought a larger then normal gift would be okay....so I asked hubby for the Caran d'Ache Neocolor II Artists' Crayons. Now as you know these are expensive but I did find them on Amazon at a fairly good price as compared to to the online art supply stores. I am a professional acrylic painter so I have experience with a brush. I know me....I would want them all so I asked for the set of 84 because in the end I know I will want them all. I made that mistake when I bought my Faber Castell Polychromos. Anyhow...armed with all that info I want your opinion.....is there something out there you would buy and still be satisfied? Keep in mind one of the things I am considering this is a lifetime set. They sell open stock so that's great and I would more then likely also add the metallic set to this.....so what would you buy? Thanks Lindsey.

Okay I want to get into water soluble oil pastels for use in my coloring books and also for use as art. last I checked the Pentel is really expensive and hard to get. So I'm deciding between these primas and the mungyo water soluble oil pastels. The mungyos are less expensive and you get more colors. So I'm a bit weary of the mungyos and don't know what to purchase? I do have the soft pastels by mungyo and they are ok for my purposes. I also love the nu pastels by prismacolor and know they can be used with water as well although I have yet to find a tutorial demonstrating this. I plan on getting some online next week open stock to try them out. My question to you: Pentel, prima or mungyo water soluble oil pastels? I love the neo colors but they are so expensive and some of the colors in the whole set are really close too each other so I don't believe I need the whole set. Im really lost here as this is a new media to me and I don't want to be disappointed with the oil pastels I buy or worse yet buy the mungyos and they suck and I think it's just a me problem. I realize this is a old video but thanks for any help you may be able to offer.

Hi Limsday. Regarding the Portfolios, do you have any idea if they change their wrapper? All videos I've found reviewing the Portfolios, I see them having a golden wrapper but I bought a set last week, and the wrapper is black. And they are SO WEAK in pigment dry and with water they are even worst! Im so dissapointed. I bought 2 boxes cause (since they are not sold open stock) I wanted to avoid needing to go back to the art store. (Is about 2 hours away from me.) And yes, both sets are just as bad. The outer box is exaxtly the same as rhe one you showed. Is it possible they changed their formula?! I could never get hues like you got on your swatch card with my Portfolios! I bought some oil pastels from a thrift store, some Loew Cornell and they are hard and not water soluble at all. Is it the brand, the age or the type of oil pastels? I have to press really hard to color with them and when I tried to wet them to color on a stamp it didn't work at all. I had to rub them hard on the stamp too and they did not transfer, even when I tried to heat the stamp with the oil pastel to see if they'd work.

They changed the name in their art supplies to "art pholosophy" and their papercraft stuff is still prima
