Even if the saw doesn't kick back, it can bind and make the two sides of the cut scissor past each other. That happened to me, squeezed the inside of my finger out like stuffing.

Even better lay a sheet of plywood on the horses to act as a table, then you just lay 2x4s underneath the plywood you're cutting parallel to the cut. Nothing gets sacrificed and your plywood is fully supported.

Even if it's much cheaper to buy a circular saw every diy guy should invest in a track saw! Clean straight guided cuts, allows you to break down big sheets of ply much easier than on a tablesaw, clean cross cuts off small pieces with simple diy jigs just like a mitre saw, jointing boards like a jointer, etc. And you are instantly ready to start even big high quality projects. Sell them or take the time to save up money and build up your tool collection. Circular saws in my opinion are for job sites because of portability

This basically a handheld kickback like a table saw but it’s the blade that cuts the deepest 😮 I was taught to have the blade set at 1/8 of an inch above the surface of the boards since that’s the amount it may cut you, basically a scratch rather than a half inch of a severe injury 😢

So apparently you have to stop the cut partway through, add support, then resume. Don't know that I would sacrifice wood, just add the support(s) under the already cut section, let the removed section fall (or not depending on support spacing) when the cut is finished.

I’ve always sort of instinctively done this, I just let things fall to avoid my fingers. I wonder if you know how to avoid kickback from a chain saw? I am poor so I had to cut a split tree down myself and I cut the whole thing without any mishaps whatsoever and then got to the very last cut on the trunk and it kicked back and I almost cut my head in half. It was a 12” electric chainsaw because I’m a girl.
@kevindumas1743
@kevindumas1743 Жыл бұрын
I recommend using a wedge, it creates a gap while you’re cutting and should eliminate kick back, I highly recommend it…
@Agrillot6
@Agrillot6 Жыл бұрын
@@kevindumas1743 I’ll have to look into that, I had to cut another one down and got the saw stuck in the tree and had to wedge the tree open by hammering a hatchet into the cut to wedge it open to get my saw out of there. I’m going to have to cut another tree down this year or next, but it’s a lot smaller than either.

Thank you. Started making Halloween decor earlier today with no real guidance or training… I was determined. My boyfriend fed me to the wolves and left me with this tip, “good luck not loosing a finger when the saw kicks back”. I proceeded to work on my project and accomplished a lot. For some reason, his words just popped back in my head so I decided to look up saw kickbacks…. Yikes! Glad I did. Thank you for this video because I for sure am that person who will try hold up my longer falling pieces. Just glad I didn’t run into any problems earlier and will certainly take extra precautions. I really was taking the guard and other built-in safety precautions for granted.

Great advice! Surprised users aren't so paranoid of this tool that they would do something so reckless. This is tied with the angle grinder for tools that scare me the most. Good to know, I bought my first circ today! I made some sawhorses with a hand saw last week out of an old gate, once I finished that I went ahead and decided my life would be much easier with an electric saw after all 😆 My dad lost the tip of his thumb last year when a saw kicked back and this is exactly the type of thing I would’ve done trying to support it like I do when I cut with a hand saw 😅 Many thanks!

Not the same thing, but made me think of it. I used to always tie off the safety lever on my walk-behind mower, convinced I'd never reach under the mower deck to remove clumps of grass. But! Lo-and-behold, one day I was lost in thought when I began to reach under the mower deck with the mower blade spinning at full rpm. Suddenly my focus returned and I jerked my hand back, promising myself I'd never again defeat the mower's safety device. I was so so lucky to come away unscathed. All it takes is a moment of inattention for disaster to strike.

I have a rule, never put flesh over an active cutline. I do do this, but I use my fingertips along the under edge, never actually reaching across the cut. You don't want or need full support, you just want to prevent it from cracking. Also I'm quick to let off the trigger when the saw does anything I don't like. Still, good thing to know.
