A mentor once told me don’t trust a man that walks without a limp. His point was people that are perfect haven’t been through anything yet. Once you’ve gone through some serious challenges it shows. You’ve got a “limp”. There are some scars. The thing is this takes time. In my 20’s and even my 30’s I couldn’t have spoken with authenticity to heart break, loss, or serious struggle. Until my 40’s I couldn’t speak with authenticity to health issues, and losing everything. It takes time to gain experience and discover who you really are. Then it takes more time to figure out how to then bring that man or woman to the world in a way that benefits those around you.

So true! When you’re building a business, most of your time is spent on operations, problem-solving, and delivering great customer service. Meanwhile, there are so many people online selling the idea of “building a personal brand” without having real, fundamental knowledge to back it up. The irony is that there are incredibly talented entrepreneurs out there with strong personal brands, even if they don’t realize it, yet they stay behind the scenes while the internet amplifies the voices of those who lack authenticity. It’s frustrating, but it shows the importance of balancing visibility with substance.

There is nothing unique about modern times regarding this. In the 20th Century: Milton Berle. Bing Crosby. Jimmy Savile. Napoleon Hill. Book, movie, song, show -- they all had a brand, not a persona, and the guy behind the brand was at best a disappointment.

@@thefutur I think people could learn a lot about personal branding by looking at the long history of authors. Authors gained from their notorious reputations of being distasteful or even disgusting throughout history, but they simply didn't care either way. It was the authors who weren't consistently who they truly were that suffered, and often ones who initially looked morally acceptable suffered the most.

So when someone does the hard work of self examination they stand out because they’re rare. It takes time to hone crafts & this instant gratification world only gives quick fix solutions. I’m impressed with a young person who is knowledgeable in an industry but they still need to create other skills because society will only give them their Warholian 15 minutes of fame. That knowledge of yourself goes into how you show up on camera, your process of creating, figuring out a niche you can create and grow in and have a mutual connection with the right audience and build a thriving community. Even the process of content creation is learning more about yourself and figuring out yourself the more you create and the more you connect with other people, sharing your knowledge and value with them.

One of the biggest lessons I learned in 2024 is that achieving business goals and personal development are two sides of the same coin. I was banging my head against the wall for months wondering why I was stuck, and it wasn’t until I addressed some lifelong bad habits and mental obstacles seemingly unrelated to my business that everything changed… almost overnight! If you feel like you’re in a rut, maybe invest some time and energy into FIXING that thing you don’t want anyone to know about. It’s the best investment I’ve made in a long time.

So glad that you’re speaking so openly and honestly about this topic. It’s all fun and games until you get personally swindled by one of these people. A few years ago, I joined a women’s networking group. Long story short, around 99% of the women I interacted with were lying in some way about their personas. There is only one women out of about 20 that I was around on a regular basis at the meet ups who I can say genuinely walked the walk. And ironically she ended up distancing herself from ME because I was going through some hard stuff at the time (left an abusive relationship) and was relying on her services a bit more than I should have been. I’m forever grateful to her for not caring about the money and essentially firing me as a client so I could take the good from the (energy healing) work we did together and move on with my life. Rather than continuing to attempt to rely on her solely to get through a difficult time. It impressed me so much that it left a lasting impression that I hope to be able to embody myself some day. She was not willing to infantilize me and allow me to stay unwell so that she could continue to make a buck off of me. She was truly about helping people, and cared enough about herself to not allow draining clients to be around her. (Shortly thereafter, I got into specific therapy for my childhood traumas and I’m so much better off for it.) The rest of the women, especially the “life/business coaches” saw me as a vulnerable victim (which I was at the time, thinking I would find kindness and support in a WOMEN’S networking group) and absolutely took advantage of me or attempted to. Many of which are already or aspire to be known for their “personal brands” while cloaking their lack of any actual success with buzzwords and fake testimonials. Didn’t even know this was a thing until one of them stated publicly at a meet up how lovely it was to work with me when we had never actually worked together yet! You are spot on about these people just asking for fraud charges/a lawsuit, the lengths they will go to appear a certain way is mind boggling. To the point that it had me taking an honest look about how and where I was attempting to puff myself up in my own business that could potentially get me into hot water. I’m not immune or perfect, I was doing it to, but certainly not with the intention to deceive or mislead. Just to be taken seriously. I was always pretty good at being honest when I didn’t know something, but I certainly had a habit of making excuses for not delivering on things I had promised to, and become far too comfortable with just getting by instead of slowing down and taking the time to make sure that I could actually deliver on the things I was taking on. It’s a form of deception to attempt to come across like business is going great when the wheels are actually falling off behind the scenes. So I learned, why lie about that or attempt to? I’m the one who ultimately suffers in the end by not being honest wth myself and others. Boundaries, boundaries, boundaries. To add insult to injury, I was renting a place from one of them (before I had seen the true colours of this group) who KNEW what I was going through in terms of just leaving my abusive ex, and decided to attempt to smear my name and business because she thought I was after her man! I kinda had to talk to the guy because he was also my LANDLORD. The entire situation was insane, also because she would speak so highly of me as a tenant at the meet ups, but in reality they were NOT doing the things that they said they would do and I ended up having to get out of the lease 2 months early because of it. Everyone in that group thinks they are this successful power couple, when in reality they fight constantly, had mountains of debt (was told this openly, did not ask), talked crap about each other when I was alone with one of them, and are the worst landlords that I have ever had. The only place I had to go after getting out of the lease was my car, because I was drained of my energy and money by that point. I ended up losing everything. My business and most of my personal possessions. Not blaming them. It’s on me that I was not working through my own traumas that caused it, I own my part in my eventual demise. Rock bottom is a very sobering teacher. And I want to share my story not for sympathy but so that other people can learn from mistakes and work on themselves BEFORE it has to get to that extreme place. Life is slowly getting better and I’m grateful everyday. But I certainly didn’t need to make things so hard for myself. It taught me a HUGE lesson in the personas that we put on to make ourselves appear successful and worthy. Behind the scenes, it’s so true about the saying that confidence is quiet and insecurities are loud. I no longer talk so openly about my story nor present myself as a victim in any way. It’s just asking to be taken advantage of. At some point, I will share my story to hopefully help others, but once I’m actually in a good place and empowered in my recovery/healing journey to be able to actually walk the walk to the best of my ability. There is zero need to present one’s self in a way to garner pity or sympathy. All it does is attract the wrong type of people. It’s been over a year since the bulk of this went down and it’s still palpable how sobering it feels to have people treat you like you’re faking having been in an abusive relationship to garner clout…when in reality that’s exactly what I was going through and they were projecting their own deceptions onto me. Although I own my part of it, I still didn’t deserve to be treated the way that I was. So I’m in no way saying that we deserve poor treatment for making mistakes or whatever. Just that there is far more benefit to doing the work on yourself, than not doing it and attempting to appear as though you have. Hopefully people are becoming more aware of it and learning that being authentic is not about what you project. It’s about who you are and what you learned from what you’ve been through. One should be able to talk as much about their failures as their successes, since we have all experienced both. And if you haven’t experienced both, wait until you do before starting to attempt to be seen as an expert in anything. There are no shortcuts, and if we try to take them, we will suffer for it. These people will learn their lessons just by having to be them. It’s a painful reality to live in to not know one’s self. The journey isn’t easy, but it’s completely worth it. There are so many (free) resources available nowadays, that staying unhealed (and harming others as a result) is a choice. And our choices will always come with consequences, good and bad.

The core problem lay in the fact that many are fabricating their persona. A true personal brand, if there is such a thing, is in fact your reputation (who others come to believe you are). You should ask yourself how you want to show up; that is, of course, self-awareness-you should also know your endearing traits (that's your character-who you know yourself to be). You don't have to falsify who you are to be liked, nor should you. There are 8 billion people on the planet; many will not like you or know you, so embrace your true self, flaws and all. Curating how others perceive you makes you less "authentic." Most people who spruik to "be authentic" on social media fail to practice what they preach in this regard. Thanks for sharing this. Chris Do.

Personal branding is deep AF - it took me two years of all kinds of unraveling to find my authentic self.

I agree 100%. There's so much fakeness and so-called 'gurus' out there. It's great that we can recognize them and 'choose' to unsubscribe, unfollow, or avoid them. Unfortunately, a lot of the system is based on perception-if you look successful, people are more likely to trust you. That’s just how it’s set up. While it's frustrating, the reality is that algorithms and society often promote this kind of behavior, making it even harder. I think the best approach is to stay authentic. People are smarter than we sometimes give them credit for, and if you're genuine, you'll attract the right audience. It might take patience, but it’s worth it in the long run -real connections always outshine fake impressions.

Thank you Chris. MM from SG. You know... I had been resisting calling myself a "coach". Because somewhat deep down I've been having this sensing that most of it is BS. Take linkedin for example--people post content, write in a way others like/comment/share their post. Then they call themselves personal branding coach for linkedin... played the feeling of lack of someone else... so they can productise and monetise this "skill". And same goes for every other niche too. I resisted selling or affiliate for anything for 10 years because it just felt fake. I think you've put it out poetically well that personal brand is kinda like solving our own problems with our own solution and offering it to others. I can totally resonate with them and building my own movement now. I guess why I'm still on it when I should have had quitted like everytime before this mainly -- CONVICTION, TRUTH, BELIEF.

I have some doubts about percentage being 98% (unless there is unbiased stats on that matter) although it might seem that way. My doubt comes from the idea that real/honest/authentic/sincere creators are not that heavily marketed and aggressively putting themselves out there so if we dim down the noise/dark psychology and dig deeper we might find some real gemstones. But I'm a romantic so I might be biased towards seeing good in humanity. This video made me a subscriber. Thank you.

Welcome to the Futur. I think social media has conditioned creators to act, behave and show up a certain way that isn't congruent with their true selves.

@@thefutur I believe people are getting more in need, inequality growing being a big one (often why people try going independent), so the incentives are completely misaligned. Look at how people act when they have years of FU money and those who have less than 6 months of runway. The difference is often big unless they're what the French call a Bohemian. I've followed you for years, posted content on social media (this is a throw away), got clients that way, and decided to distance my personal "brand" from my business after learning something: How you survive can't come from the same place you find or build personal meaning. I've written things that would immediately end my business if part of its brand now (what's happening in the ME) because it hit way too close to home (literally), and likely still hurt it a little anyways. But it has been my way of making sense of myself and the world. Imagine profit and sales corrupted that? Nope. Not worth it.

I really only follow the soul… that’s why I only follow like five people. Any of those people like you, Chris your content is such that this is what you talk about even though you do teach business and all of those things you do it from a different place. But I’ve done a lifetime of work on being true to myself. That’s what I still do and I don’t want to learn. I’m actually repulsed learning from someone that just has stats alone. I’m not saying I can’t be fooled, but I do believe the spiritual component of it, and if I feel something wonky my spirit, it’s not for me .

So much truth in just a few minutes. Amen brother, thanks for sharing and put in together that clear for all. For me, it’s all about the content, the tools, the real deal someone can give for free on social media. Then If I need his product, service, mentorship or whatever I’ll be thrilled/honored to pay for ir, cuz I saw that this person has been through it, that knows the drill and can take me from point A to point B in a shorter period of time than what it presumably will take me. And time is the only treasure in life for me, so i’ll be happy to exchange his/her expertise/knowledge for just money. Thing is, I couldn’t care less about his material world, where he lives at, etc. The famous facade most people rely on. Trying to sell some weird VIP lifestyle most people will never have nor wont btw.

Lead with value. Solve a problem for yourself, document what you learn along the way, get help when needed, package the result as a product and build a business. If you help enough people and enough people get value from you, they will start to talk about you and share your insights and ideas with others. Lasting status and fame come from seeking to serve first with the unintended consequence of that service potentially being notoriety.

Thank you for speaking about this. I totally laughed at the anti-Chris...LOL. I'm fairly new to this world of entrepreneurship and it's always bothered me that people make themselves look more successful than they really are or create an image so they can get audience, leads or sales. I appreciate your take on personal brand beings us healing through our childhood traumas. As I'm journeying I'm discovering more about my self, issues I have and where they come from and trying to use them to help others uncover themselves too. I feel like it's layers of an onion. Or in the words of Donkey, "like a parfait...because everybody loves a parfait." Thanks again for speaking honestly in a world of manufacturedness!

I’m not sure about other parts of the world, but the term ‘guru’ has already taken on a negative and unpleasant connotation due to the prevalence of fake, self-proclaimed gurus. Some of them, as Chris mentioned, package their business courses into overly expensive episodic masterclasses, causing many people in Malaysia to fall into this scheme. All I can say is that they are highly skilled in public speaking, presentation, and convincing others to believe they are authentic gurus. Ultimately, they lead people to sign up for their higher-tier masterclasses, which are often ridiculous.

You all forget we are in the business of sales. And the only time you are right about people faking it to make it, is if the product doesn't work. Human are products too. Theres personal branding, theres also selling yourself

I agree with all of that but we cant minus out the smaller brands who get shattered by this mentality of others ecause people start to ignore the smaller brands. Because there are alot of brands out there they build one aspect of building is making a relationahip with your audience. It gets hard when people start thinking your fake because they have been instilled with this mentality.

This is an extremely tall ask but I am a book junkie ... to me it's literally the universe laying on a shelf back to back ... I would be blown away If I could get that book list either as a PDF or as a photo so I can do my own DD and go through that knowledge bank. I ask with literally zero expectation, but it would mean the world to me to get an insight of all those books. Much Appreciated

One of the best I have watched in a while. Personal Branding is bullshit. Authentic personalities are far more important. However... we can see the immense popularity of fake gurus, and plastic morality and it makes it hard to over come at times. I have a friend who sends his followers 2- 3 emails daily. I hate it. He hates it. The followers hate it. He tried doing only one per week, but found that his sales plummeted (for that particular item). It is a cultural problem, not a marketing one. But - hey, I'm an old guy. I am not impressed by fitness gurus who rewrite 25-year-old self-help books or the idiotic stooges standing next to Lambos and yachts. That is not success; that's a depreciating asset. The fear of being thrown into that cesspool of fraud keeps me from doing much on social media.
@thefuturАй бұрын
we can choose to be one of the two. fake. real. even if it means at the cost of some short term wins. we win in the long run. at the end of our lives, we will have to account for the deeds of our past.
@hiddenbuddhahealingcenter816Ай бұрын
Yes, exactly. No one is exempt from the ancient universal principles that govern life and each of us. We are each accountable for every action we take because each human arrived on the planet as a highly evolved spiritual being. We can each decide to live that true role and responsibility or take that power and turn it into degeneration , decline and destruction. This is a free will Universe. But the laws in the Order of the Infinite Universe always apply. I had 2 Near Death Experiences 30 years ago, each with a full life review. I felt 100 fold, the intensity of the impact of my every action. If humans listen to their true self, their soul self, then they would remember that their every action, and thought, matters.
