I would not mind seeing a (non prime) 3D Metroid game take a few notes from this games fast pace action, and combine with the platforming action and beam combo's from Super Metroid. The claustrophobic environments could also be utilized for more logical combat and platforming sequences without the need of invisible walls and the like.

I remember when I first played Vanquish during its original 360 release debut. This was before I started having an appreciation for action games the way I do with W101 and Bayonetta today, so when I finished Vanquish a long time ago, I was left underwhelmed because it was a short game and I played it all the way through behind covers the whole time. Now that I understand the mentality of action arcade games, I gave Vanquish a 2nd try on the PC, and now I seriously can't enough of the game. I've been playing through the game countless times, and I've even managed to push my way through on God Hard. Does the game hold up? Of course it does. It may have a few issues here and there, but just like with Bayonetta, it only gets better the more you play it. It's so stylish and chaotic, it's great. I seriously need to make a stylish video just to showcase how much fun the game is.

A big reason why the human grunts exists is to distract enemies. The catch with fighting enemies who use bullets is that you can't always dodge them. So a lot of shooters solve this by having other people around to soak up some of the damage. I bet the game would've been near impossible without them always around. Plus they serve to make the battles look larger. They probably wanted you to feel like your skating through a battlefield, not just going solo like Bayonetta.

Biggest problem is that it still keeps the staples of shooters that slow down the pace of the game. Reloading and regenerative health. Regenerative health is self talk to death about. Reloading being a slow mechanic is a reletively new topic. If a game has reloading, time is spent relading rather than shooting, and in this case boosting.

One thing I didn't like was the weapon upgrade system, where if you loot a gun you are already carrying and have full ammo in you will rank the weapon up. 5 years too late, I finally finished Vanquish. Nothing fancy, just on normal mode. And it kicked my ass. (Guess I'm not good at video games..😅) I agree with a lot of your critique, although I think there's a few things I'd like to add. 1. The melee is, for the most part, well balanced. It's an insta-kill with a bonus amount of slo-mo for clearing more enemies. In large firefights, it can be satisfying to pull off a melee, and instantly use slow mo to take down a few more enemies before jumping to cover and keeping up the fire. The melee, in my opinion works well in all except the boss fights, where melee is almost always a bad option. (The exception to this is the boss fight against the "Unknown" amalgamation robots.) Since the melee itself does low damage and drains all your energy, you're a sitting duck waiting to be deep fried. So yeah, it could be modded or balanced more for boss fights. 2. The weapon upgrade system... Is weird? I'm not sure I like it? Like, I guess it's supposed to encourage the use of specific weapons per playthrough, but it also seems counter-intuitive since the only way to upgrade weapons.... Is to not use them? Just equip them at max ammo and let other weapons (and the limited melee) carry the weapons till they are sufficiently upgraded? 3. The story has potential, but just as you said - it's generic and boring. The whole rivalry with Burns and Sam is actually good - they're both skilled, poweful soldiers on the battlefield who essentially use the troops as cannon fodder to manipulate and use for their gain. Burns does it in cutscenes, and Sam in gameplay (by using Soldiers as a Distraction, healing them to get guns and grenades as and when necessary, and then killing them without remorse when they turn on you.) Both of them are one-man armies, but they still use armies to suit their needs. It's just the everything else is handled so badly... It's just drowned out in the sea of generic monotony. 4. The credits sequence is just.... Amazing. Funniest sequence ever. Overall, even now Vanquish stands as a fun, rewarding and unique Third person shooter, and I'm not sure if that's a good thing.
