"What if YOU gonna die on Your commute tomorrow evening coming from a job You don't like, going to a place You do not like either?" is what I asked people who wanted to keep me from my first singlehanded trip (which wasn't very far anyway) some 30 years ago with this "You-actually-could-die!" argument, and "I prefer to die out there if I could choose". There are people who wouldn't choose being out there when it happens. We can accept that, can't we? We would like them to accept the seafaring people's choices as well, though. Great story. Thanks for sharing that, too, in all it's epic detail. Hope for You You'll go for a sail again. (Would watch and comment again for sure 😄) Cheers.

Thanks Manfred, What was your single hander like? Where did you go? We have both lived adventurous lives and hope to keep....keeping on :-)
@manfredschmalbach90236 жыл бұрын
Oh, well .... I tried to never let any adventure pass the last several decades now, so in singlehanding it would be like: First was from Barcelona to Latakia back in the days when You still could go nearly everywhere in the Med as European/German - an astonishingly well paid, smooth'n fast transfer for a lovely private owner who preferred to take the fast lane in her jet herself, an experience which hooked me for good. Longest (to date) was from Zadar to Gran Canaria, a transfer of a couple of charter tupperwarez on their way to the Caribbean; I was for my own on the one I took there, they were pretty short in staff and gave me the usual money for a crew of three 😂 - one stop in Africa for cheap Diesel, though. The best payed by far: getting as many privately owned Yachts out of Zadar as possible (before the nearing front hit the marina) when Yougoslavia fell apart. One man one -vote- boat. On the last ride I took part in we were already shot at from the hills behind the marina - not fun, but heaps of money. The hardest by far: from Stade to Inverness. North Sea is a murderer even in "good" weather - or what they sell as "good" in terms of weather up there; first it kills Your material one sail or part at a time, and at last it kills You. I do get seasick, but usually not for several days in a row; even considered a stopover in Peterhead, cancelled for "good-weather-window closing" though. Was even happy to go back to continent on a real big'n stable carferry (took a cheap XJ Jag back for a friend - a story for its own). The one with the most different countries in it was a nearly complete round-Baltic summer (skipped Russia - would definitely not do that again). And some lazy lovely winters in the Dodekanes, of course, while that weren't distances but more nice daysails for a longer period of time, off season, off grid and off beaten track between remote islands, on my own or on customer's boats I fixed in exchange for living on those for a bit. Nothing to really write anything about, compared to Canuckistan-to-Oz transpac, of course.

God can someone start a go fund me page for these two!!!! Your Grandad sounds awesome! ☺️ it’s the best way to sail... to feel it all. On a foggy cold night leaving Canada Eryn said,” I cant see anything, not even the stars nor the little compass” I said, “do you feel the wind ? Well just keep that on the side of your face” Staring at electronics, screens and wind instruments is not what we’re chasing.. we hope to set sail for Denmark early next year all going well.... 😁 We do have a Patreon page, Patreon.com/thegeordiethewitchandthewench Thanks for the lovely comment 🌟

I don't want to be a hater, but that's not a good way to start an adventure. The reason for a sea trial is not to just see how the boat works but how well she works and to find out if she's ready for the sea. An extensive survey, repairs, training the crew before the big trip and having safety gear is the smart thing to do. You guys were very, very lucky that it all worked out. Heck, you talk about twice almost being knocked overboard in the early stages of the trip, that block could have easily split your head open. I am glad It worked out though, faIr winds.
@TheGeordietheWitchandtheWench6 жыл бұрын
ray Nic thanks!! We understand your concerns.... Captain has lived on the water for 14 years and this is his 5th boat, his last boat was a Gaff rigged ketch, 15 tonne. A very similar boat to Narhval. We are now looking at sailing from Oz to the U.K following Captain Cooks route around the horn 😉 all the best for the New Year ⚡️

Great to hear your awesome story. Just one question, why is there some footage of an old sailing cat in the middle ? Looks like a nice boat, but not sure how it fits the story with Narwhal. Or am I seeing things ?

Chas!! I just watched this video for the first time ages!! What a couple of nut jobs!! 🤭😂 I don’t see a cat? A couple of photos of my old gaffer Kestrel, but she was a monohull 🤗

@@TheGeordietheWitchandtheWench Yes I see your old gaffer, but later at 14.40 to 14.45, to my old eyes that looks like a cat (I sailed an old Heavenly Twins for years), two hulls, cross beam, bridles for the forestays, etc. Certainly an old cat, with plenty of wood, maybe a Wharram ?
