One more thing the early Artisans levels teach the player is that reaching the end of a level doesn't really help you to progress the game. By purposely placing the end of a level very closely to its beginning, it's very easy for a first-time player to run into the end of a level in no time and making them realize afterwards that they actually gained nothing from it. So they go back in to try and find more gems and dragons, teaching organically that Spyro 1 is more about exploring and searching for secrets rather than just beating levels as quickly as possible. The challenge is not finishing a level, but uncovering everything it has to offer.

Reposting my comment from the membership upload, but am going to watch this again. Because why not. Went in hoping for a retrospective but got something just as good and perhaps better fitting for this game. Everything blended together truly created such a unique experience and one to this day I enjoy, and you perfectly explained why this game stands out as it does. It also got me thinking about something another game channel said -- in short, you can tell when a developer takes a mechanic or feature of a game and builds on or around it. In my opinion, no other game comes nearly as close to Spyro in this regard. As you said, you're given everything from the start (minus the few world/level gimmicks [and even those have layers added on them]), and yet they were able to make so many different ways of requiring those few things yet never make it feel redundant. I could go on to gush about the world/level designs, music -- the whole vibe of the game. In short, it has that Insomniac magic and is a prime example of why they're one of my favorite game developers. Lastly, Toasty is one of the greatest bosses in all of gaming. You can't convince me otherwise.

Man, I remember growing up with Spyro games on the Playstation *1.* Back when game disks came in little CD cases and not the DVD or Blue-Ray cases we've had since, like, the early 2000's or something. Man I feel old now...

as one of the people who can confidently say they have played spyro 1 more than 99.999% of people on earth, not even playing it every single day and making it a career made this game any less magical. i earnestly believe this game is one of the single best platformers of the 5th generation. (yes i am very biased)

Funnily enough, I feel the exact same way about Pokémon Emerald, with the Battle Frontier. At the very least, we DID get Platinum and HGSS not that long after it, but...I still have yet to find another game that has such a compelling and fun postgame before or since...unless you count Pokémon Unbound.

The original spyro games are truly magical feeling, they’re video game gems (ha haaaaaa). But fr nothing captures the ethereal feeling of music and atmosphere, as good as Reignited was, the OG’s have a special place in my heart…and on my shelf, the only ps1 games I’ve held onto over the years

Spyro 1 is like an EXTREMELY simple song that repeats the same riff. It's just a really solid riff, and they do a good job dolling it up as you go. Nothing new, just your same moves with Organic. Like you said, you're just there. No story outside of the intro cutscene. Go to place. There's stuff in that place. Get some stuff or get all stuff. I compare Spyro 1 to a platformer FAN GAME., and I don't mean that jn a bad way. Fan games rarely have resources or the ability to make the world "dynamic", it's usually just a limited engine with the fundamentals. Rarely any kind of cutscenes. They only have access to a couple of riffs, and they need to make an entire album out of em. Spyro 1 is almost like a GIANT tech demo. A practice run at a platformer of sorts. Ironically, it's that niche that makes it stand out.

Just off the beginning of the video, haven't finished it, Zera: Myths Awaken is pretty damn close in aesthetic and "learn it yourself", mostly. It's still in development and was previously a Spyro fan game, but it's got some very interesting platforming/movement mechanics that if you don't play around with and eventually master will leave you without full completion. It's a really fun run through last I played a few years ago.
@TheGoldenBolt8 минут бұрын
That's specifically the one I'm referring to when I mention indie revivals that quickly end up on hiatus, actually! It's been 4+ years since the last update and it went on hiatus about 30 months ago, with the developer apparently working on different projects.

The only other game I've seen that does this sort of inspect your surroundings and take leaps of faith thing is a proof of concept Sonic fan game called Sonic Utopia. I 100% believe the creator of that game was inspired by the charge puzzles in Spyro.

Fun fact the Japanese version of Spyro 1 is considered hard mode out of any other regional version because the Japanese version has fixed camera angles and you cannot change it and unfortunately for me i played the first 2 games oddly enough we never got the third game out in Japan in the year 2001 I got to experience the trilogy of these games for the first time in the USA and my mind was blown

@ I never disagreed with that! Solo game development is massively time consuming. I was just surprised Golden Bolt didn’t mention it, so I assumed it must have been one of the “cancelled” projects he mentioned in this video.
@TheGoldenBolt3 сағат бұрын
The last I'd seen is that it's been on hiatus for 2.5 years after another 1+ year of limited communication, and that the developer had started working on other projects. Altogether I believe the most recent build of that game is now 4-5 years old - that's exactly the one I was referencing, when talking about hiatuses!

I've put about an hour into it! It's...fine? It kinda goes more for that _movement_ focus that a lot of other indie platformers have focused on, and it feels fine enough, but something didn't click. Plus, the aesthetic felt more "N64 fan mod" than N64 game, if that makes sense? I can't really describe it well yet, but it has that creepy, overemphasis-on-red-and-purple vibe that a lot of modern "N64" games go for, to make you feel the same way you did as a kid when you saw something that isn't creepy as an adult but for some reason was then. Every time I've experienced a game that tries that vibe, it just doesn't work for me personally. I've gotta get back to it though, still!
