I knew about this sweep but I didn’t know that golden detail about scooting his legs together and getting more in a parallel position to his hips that was absolute gold. It’s 4:25am right now so I can’t use it but I’m gonna try later on today lol.

As another plan B, if you have the undertook and they post out with their far arm, blocking the roll, you can also whizzer on the underhook side, shrimp out, and take back. If you don't have the underhook, you can shoot your nearside leg underneath your far leg and through while maintaining pressure on their neck, pull your arm that is on their knees out and roll to your knees, then throw the now nearside leg (formerly the outside leg) over their back. There are several options from here, depending on that they do, to finsh getting back or rolling back to guard.

Thanks for this amazing option! I’ve been trying this one recently but it is difficult to maintain their legs close together. As soon as they feel it they sprawl out the leg that my hand is trying to control, and legs are stronger. Being fast about it is easier said than done. The top person feels immediately that something is wrong and bases out fast with the leg (I’m greedy, I want the sweep instead of closed guard). Also I agree with the other commentator that this is more difficult with top person on their knees/shins, especially trying to get their legs close together. This top control position is far more common where I train and the sprawled leg top control is more common from the old school guys.

This looks fantastic. I've watched a lot of side control escape videos and this makes the most sense so far. I find myself controlling the knee and moving my hips towards my opponent naturally quite often, so this has filled in the blanks! Can't wait to try it! Really enjoying your videos Tom. Great stuff Tom, I like this sweep from side control , I have found I can only do it to a few ppl , If they don't post the sweep works if they do I just get them back into guard with the space created.. underhook on 1 side, grab knee on other side, walk towards his legs a bit weakening the base, release your underhook as you bridge, reach up and over and you end up in side control of him with an underhook/// if partner has underhook elbow in grab knee, walk towaords him, bridge , big bridge..maybe have feet int he air then launch to ground and bridge for poewr i guess in general walk your legs closer to him before your bridge..have an underhook.. the flick of the wrist thing ...gotta try that

Mounting is always a possibility and the key to its prevention is to ensure your hip is in contact with their torso during the roll so they cannot get their leg over without switching their base and consequently losing their balance

You can always take the back by scooting out the back door if you have the outside underhook. But thats gonna be a bit more of a dogfight that you could lose especially if they get a strong whizzer and break down your posture.

Hi coach Tom, what if your partner who is controlling you in side control has his knees very close to you, one under your armpit and the other by your hips, wouldnt it make the roll a lot harder?

Good comment and the answer is yes and no. By having a short base they are less like a cylinder and more like a ball. Both of these objects roll so I tend to find that is you bridge high enough, you can roll shortbase guys too but worst case just recover your near elbow inside his body to weaken his side control.
