Hello. Great vid, startling results. Do you believe the perlite alone is responsible for the dramatic difference? Or is it the better aeration? Have you experimented with a potting soil heavily blended with perlite? Maybe 50/50? Or potting soil alone? Sorry for all the questions. I may have a couple of hundred of these to do and I'll do it as I must but potting soil is much less expensive for me in bilk that perlite. Thanks in advance...

I don’t use soil anymore in propagating rubber plants. Now, my most effective and easy way of propagating rubber plant is by the use of water only. But of course, perlite still amazing and effective. For me, using of soil has a lot of bacteria or living organism that may cause the cuttings to rot. Unlike water and perlite, they are sterile or clean. Just my opinion.

Out of curiosity, will this method work with Ficus altissima? I got one with very nice upper leaves, but the lower leaves have brown spots, so I’d like to cut the top two-thirds of the stem off to separate it from the ugly lower leaves, and have the nice top part grow new roots to pot.

Hello, my work schedule is hectic so I have been adding water to my perlite every few days just to make sure it doesn't dry out? Can leafs propagating in perlite be overwatered? I'm afraid if I don't do it every few days, I will get busy and they will have a period where they dry out. Love this video! Thank you.

Hello….May I ask how often you water the one planted in LECA? How about the one in perlite, please. Thanks very much. Also, it seemed to me the ones growing in perlite and LECA are healthier. I wonder what you did with the one in LECA….Did you also transfer the rubber plant in soil and perlite?
@thegreenearth
@thegreenearth 2 жыл бұрын
For the plants in LECA, I’m just refilling the water like every 10 days or whenever I think it gets empty. Just make sure that the water reservoir doesn’t get empty. And for the perlite I normally check it like every other day and when it gets almost dry then I water it.

Hi there, thank u very much for the video! i cut my ficus elastica on March 8th (12 days ago) Yesterday on mother plant i noticed new stems 🙏🏻🥲 🥳 The cuttings i put in the perlite, to which i’m adding water. Unfortunately only one of 3 cuttings are showing roots (very small and weak, one of them i accidentally broke). But i think 2 of the cuttings are growing new leaves 😳 Maybe its better i remove two cuttings (with no roots) and put them in water?

In my experienced water propagation is still the most effective way of growing rubber plants. So yes you can put them in water and it will root faster.

For quick rooting, its best to keep the cuttings under 10 inches. For ficus elastica, even one node along with the leaf will root quickly. Cocopeat and Pearlite are best medium.

@thegreenearth
@thegreenearth 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, I never did any leaf propagation in perlite. Since just propagating by leaf alone won’t continue as a new plant. But if you’re going to include a small portion of the stem attached with one leaf it will give a great result even using perlite which I have tried already.
@I.Khalil
@I.Khalil 2 жыл бұрын
@@thegreenearth Many thanks again for your quick & clear response. Yes I indeed meant "Leaf with a small portion of the stem" , so it can root. Do I understand correctly that you tried that "Leaf with a small stem"" Propagation in Perlite ; and it worked better than Propagation Water ?
@thegreenearth

I did not do any comparison for small cuttings. I just propagated in perlite and it roots well. Just reminder to not let your perlite dried out during propagation period or else your cuttings will just dried out too and won’t root. Anyway a good idea come out for my next video. I will propagate a small cuttings of rubber plant in perlite versus water. thanks

I was once told that I shouldn’t actually change water when propagating in water. Just add some when necessary. And it really helped the roots grow faster. Also I wanted to ask - is it possible that perlite might damage the roots? This is what I read
@thegreenearth
@thegreenearth 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah you are right, not changing the water is good also and might help. But for me this is the way I do in propagation in water because most of the time the water is getting dirt so I am not comfortable of it. And yet the roots is getting fine also. In perlite, it may damage specially when you are trying to remove it and repot to soil. But still it will be fine as long as it has enough roots and it will recover eventually.

Leca is an acronym and it stands for: Lightweight expanded clay aggregate. It sounds very complicated, but it's quite easy to explain. Essentially, Leca is a growing medium, like soil, in which you can grow your plants. Leca is a collection of baked clay balls that expand when you soak them in water.
