Refugees in Calais: 'It's psychological warfare'

For many refugees Calais is the stop before they try and reach the UK. Some are Ukrainian refugees struggling to navigate the UK visa process. Others are young men who have been living outside all winter in harsh conditions and now face the prospect of being sent to Rwanda if they do manage to make the dangerous crossing to the UK.

Im from Poland and the different with Ukrainians situation is that mostly people took refugees to their homes. It wasn’t organised by state. Another thing is that Ukrainians and Polish are very cultural similar with habits and language. Among refugees mostly were woman with kids and elderly people. A lots Ukrainian men went back to their homeland to fight against russian aggression.

You should be aware that in some places like Somalia young males are targeted by terrorist groups and are recruited by force. Yo should also consider the possibility that his mom is not in her birth country but elsewhere in a refugee camp or even in England waiting for his son. There's a difference between fleeing from war and migrating to another country to look for a better job or a more comfortable life. Most Ukrainians did NOT want to leave their country and plan on returning home ASAP. Yes, agreed. And much of the anger aimed at the migrants in Calais is despicably racist. But setting aside those disgusting racist people for a moment, there remains a challenging policy issue in the Calais situation. If the UK Home Office actually has valid reasons to believe that the UK cannot handle more economic migrants / refugees - or if they can prove that the UK has taken its fair share of refugees relative to EU nations - then we do have an intractable problem in Calais. Some more innovative reforms must be implemented to more fairly accommodate the needs of these people without this slum/ghetto in Calais which is SUCH an embarassment both to the UK and France.

France and the UK have taken in millions of people from their ex colonies over the years. There is only a limited amount of space. England is already the most populated nation in Europe and the third most populated nation per square foot in the world. The rights and wrongs of the past don't negate this reality. The UK can grow another 10% or so before it hits max population capacity.

There is a difference between a war refugee (where the entire country is being destroyed/invaded), and an economic migrant looking for better opportunities. The economic migrant does not qualify as a war refugee. All economic migrants in Calais transited through safe third-countries.

@@torzsmokus Because the Ukrainians are mostly families who have arrived legally and intend to return once hostilities are over. The people crossing the channel arrive illegally and often dispose of their documents which nobody wishing to return to their homeland would ever do.

Ukrainians are being invited by the UK government to apply for asylum, either in safe 3rd countries, or directly at UK borders/ports of entry. The economic migrants in Calais were not invited. Maybe they could have applied for UK visas in their home countries or a 3rd safe country (through a UN resettlement program), but they did not. They are instead trying to skip the line by directly getting into the UK.
