Gibson Les Paul Tribute - Guitar Review - Is this an Authentic Les Paul?

I've had it for six months now. Got it for around $1,099.00, Tobacco Burst. I took the varnish off the neck with sandpaper, oiled it with tung oil, replaced the 490T with DiMarzio Super Distortion, put on 10-52 strings, tuned it half step down and I'm in heaven. The best guitar I've ever owned. Oh, mine weights just over 3,65kg (8lb 0.74oz).

Like I said before, I stepped away from playing for over 10 years. Had sold or hocked all my gear. The Gibby Tribute satin cherryburst was my first re-entry back into it. I really love mine. I am saving for a Standard or even R8 custom shop sometime next year. But in the meantime, with good Ernie Ball 9's, a great setup, a modeling amp, and a few pedals, i'm having the time of my life with the Tribute. At 52, the guitar life is great! Your channels videos are a HUGE contributor to my experience. God bless you dear brother "accross the pond." ☺👍

I shopped for a Les Paul for 2+years and it came down to the cherry burst tribute or a custom shop Les Paul custom like Jerry Cantrell and I wanted the custom shop but it wasn't $2,400+better if you know what I mean. But saying that I say good luck on your Les Paul hunt .

I did the same thing, didn't pick up a guitar in at least 10 years, probably 12.I had issues with my Gibson and had it rewired and a few other things done to make it right again. Enjoy your playing. I'm still working on getting my fingers to do what they used to. Getting there though.

I picked one up in the shop the other day. Played really well, 490R and T pickups are ubiquitous, differences seem to be aesthetic and I prefer the stripped down look and feel. If I were getting a Les Paul this is the one I'd get.

As I leave it on the wall and receive sun for a few minutes each day, the satin finish paint has already started to show some micro cracks, which makes it even more beautiful because it resembles the aging of the old 1950 gold top.

I hate the Gibson snobs who say the Tribute is not a real LP. In summer of 2020 I got a closeout price on the 2019 Studio Tribute, a one-year only model because it has uncovered pickups and dot inlays. Otherwise a normal tribute and mine is Iced Tea Burst (with red stained back and sides) and with the Guitar Center veterans' discount I paid $830 for a new one. They are still made in the US at the same factory by the same craftsmen. Still mahogany body with maple cap, 490 pickups. I believe the maple neck is an improvement, much stronger and less likely to break. I love the light weight and prefer that to any heavier model. I've heard that installing the binding and polishing the gloss finish take half the build time of the guitar so a Tribute is a real LP without the expensive cosmetics, that is all. Mine looks, sounds and plays great and is better than any Epiphone at any price.

I’ve had this exact guitar for 3 weeks and have been playin it nonstop. It plays and sounds just as good as my custom shop 335. I’m not a huge fan of the 490 pickups and will be swapping them for pearly gates, but this thing is well worth the money.

The Tribute is a great guitar. It's a bit lighter than a standard, it has a maple neck which is a bit stronger than mahogany, the neck is satin and feels really nice. It has all the bones of a great Les Paul at a much lower price. I love mine!

You didn't hear a difference in tone of the tribute versus non tribute Les Paul's? I did. Tribute does sound good, but different than a regular Paul. To me, the Tribute sounded less Gibsony, more of a Fender/Gibson hybrid tone.

@@80shairmetalband I mean, yeah if you just plug two guitars into an amp with nothing else with the same eq there will be a difference but once you eq, and add effects you can make any decent quality guitar sound like anything you want so sound quality of a guitar is a non issue for the most part. This is just my opinion.

Yes but I played and got the Epi 59 oh how nice it plays and sound. The sustain is all over the fret board like a true Les Paul. I also found the neck nicer than the tribute thanks for your knowledge.

I prefer the satin neck in the Tribute vs the Epiphones... the Epi feel like plastic because of the urethane finish and imitation mahogany. I much prefer the raw feel of wood these have.

I'm a Sheetmetal worker. 33 years. Broke my back in the summer of 2000.The weight relief is a "relief" for my back after standing and playing for several hours. Guitar plays very well. I couldn't be more happy with my Les Paul Tribute.

Great, honest video, as always from this channel. I bought this exact guitar a year ago and have never looked back! I had to make that call between the beautiful new Epiphone and this baby, but ultimately having the US made Gibson felt better to me, spiritually if not sonically 😆 I do imagine pound for pound the Epiphone is a better value but I think the Gibson tone does have a touch more character and bite but maybe Im just hearing what I want to hear. The tone he's getting here is very true to the guitar's live tone, more so than other videos Ive found online. All that aside, I love this freaking guitar, tribute or not, it's the nicest guitar I own right now (my next in line being an American Standard strat). Im not a tech guy like our friend here but the feel of the guitar is pure quality, it just has a certain smoothness and playability that is harder to find in the cheaper guitars generally. One small downside, the finish is so light that this small metal divet on my pants not only scratched the side but made a little carving because of the angle I was sitting. This was from very light playing and simply wouldnt happen with a thicker finish.

Very glad to hear you like your axe, as they say! I had a 2013 Gold Top Tribute, which I have sold dirt cheap, because it had dead spots on the neck and I hated the controls (both volume and tone dropped very quickly below 7, because of the nature of the electronics). That was a very, very stupid decision, indeed, since I could've easily swapped out the electronics and leveled the frets. Anyways, you can either refinish your guitar and make it "tougher", or, in my humble opinion, embrace the blemishes, as it shows the guitar being loved! I actually hate the fact that my Squier Telecaster Classic Vibe has a very thick gloss finish and it looks brand new after all these years, even though it's been through a LOT. It's a matter of taste, I guess, but I love guitars that show wear and tear, it personifies them and you just fall in love with them more. And the Tribute already looks plain and simple in the best sense, so it would kind of fit the character of the instrument. Just my two cents, cheers!

I'm going through agonizing torment right now over the same thing you mentioned (entry level Gibson versus high end Epi). I actually own a spritual ancestor of this guitar, a Gibson Sonex-180 which was the early 80's entry level Gibson. I'm probably going to pop for the Tribute, but thereafter it's gonna be high end Epiphone Les Pauls for me, cuz I just LOVE the looks and specs on those things!

@@MotownGuitarJoe I'm in the same boat haha. Epiphone Les Paul Custom Jerry Cantrell Wino I played at Guitar Center new for $850 or a $900 used Gibson Les Paul 60's Tribute. As much as the Wino looks and plays amazing there's something about the Tribute that just called out to me. It played fantastically. Was set up well. Low action with no buzz. The heck was nice and fast but still kind of thick. I loved it. Pickups just sang. I still can't make up my mind. I'm going back this weekend and hopefully I'll make a solid decision lol What did you end up getting?

Colin, are you aware that the Tribute models had an update to the necks at some point, where the latter necks are maple, as this one is, but the former original necks were MAHOGANY? I noticed yours was maple and thought that I might be crazy, then I pulled mine off the wall and sure enough, it's a 2017 with a mahogany neck. I'd like to see a comparison of the two and get your thoughts on the differences. Cheers from Florida.

Absolutely love my 2017 Les Paul Tribute Gold Top satin finish. Absolutely a great guitar that’s usually over looked & under appreciated. Installed a set of Monty's PAF w/ 50’s style Jimmy Page wiring harness & Kluson locking tuners along with a proper setup, perfect in my hands & to my ears.

I went into my local guitar store looking at new guitars to possibly get, and I think I ended up playing this guitar for almost an hour. The employee in the store told me that I had to stop playing because I was using it for so long. Bought one recently (Tobacco burst), as a back up for a Early 2000's LP Gothic (basically a supped up 'Studio). Honestly, these are just so much more playable. The neck just feels silky and a perfect width, the pickup's roll off nicely from raucous, to edge of break up, to clean. The big selling point is the weight, these are much more sensible. The tribute is just over 8lb, while the Gothic must be over 9lb.

I just bought a used one of these exact models (2019 Honeyburst). There's a natural "organic" quality to these stripped-back guitars that really appeals to me. It's light (for a Les Paul), the maple neck feels great, and the thick, rosewood fretboard looks great unbound. The "plekked" frets allow me to lower the action with barely a hint of fret buzz. My personal guitar has a one-piece mahogany body which was a pleasant surprise, and the maple top is so nicely figured that I removed the pickguard and poker chip so that I can admire it. Please continue to bill these as "not a Les Paul, but a tribute to the Les Paul" (that keeps the resale prices low!). I got mine for roughly half of the price of a new one, whereas the Les Paul Standard commands resale prices of about 80% of a new one. In Ontario, Canada these retail for $1749 + HST, but they can be found used for as little as $1100. Having played a variety of Epiphone Les Pauls, I can say with some confidence that the Gibson Les Paul Tribute has a better feel and a lot more "MOJO". The thin, lacquer finish plays a big part in this (mine smells like quality, Scandinavian furniture!) The pickups sound bright and lively through my VOX AC15C1, and the controls are very useful for shaping the sound right from the guitar. This guitar suits my persona to a TEE! (I play in a punk band so your rendition of Anarchy In The UK was a great touch!) Thanks again for another entertaining, excellent, and informative review, Colin!

Wonderful review, as always! And I have to say that I was really digging your playing and riffing this week. It’s always good, but I especially enjoyed your riff/song choices this week. As for the guitar, you hit the nail on the head right at the end of the video; all the differences between all these Les Paul’s is all subjective-get what fits and sounds best to you! As for me, I’d personally go for the Epiphone 59 over the Gibson Tribute; better pickups, hardware, and a case. It seems like way more bang for the buck. But then again, of course I’d say that-I’m an Epiphone fan boy! LOL Thanks again for your videos, they’re a bright spot in my week. CHEERS!

Had an “Oooooh, I own this guitar!” Moment. Wonderful video. Same finish and everything. I don’t know what the deal is with their fretboard treatment at the factory, but mine was very dry, too. Same with my Emily Wolfe Sheraton when I got it. When I bought this guitar, I’d actually gone into the shop with the intention of buying an Epi Les Paul instead. I just tried the tribute on a whim, and wound up buying it. There was a sort of Angus Young-ish warm growl to its sound that appealed to me, but the aesthetic and the feel were big in why I chose it. It almost looks like a tree grew into a Les Paul shape, if that makes sense, and the maple neck wasn’t sticky finishwise.

@The Guitaristas - In regard to @15:04 - In the neck cavity is normally the code for the painting and finish. In the bridge cavity it's normally model code sometimes combined with neck profile etc. So the FH is Faded Honeyburst.

Another great review. The neck being maple may affect the weight and sound as well. I think some years in the 70's Les Pauls had maple necks. Nice guitars, I had an early Tribute . I sold it because I liked my MIJ Epiphone better.

1975-ish to 1982-ish Lesters had 3-piece maple necks. Completely understandable about your Japanese Epi, especially the Fuji Gen, non-export specimens.

The quarter inch of solid maple cap along the edge is all the binding I need. And it sounds a hell of a lot more like a Custom than the "Classic" with those nasty zebra pickups. Mine plays like a dream, and much better than the Studio model I used to own.

They look like good fun, especially for a kid who's stepping up to their first serious guitar but, in all honesty, I'd rather get a 2nd hand LP Standard for virtually the same money. I got a 2011 Honeyburst Standard for £1100 not that long ago and despite a few knocks and bumps, it's flawless. People obsess about condition but unlike some I actually play my guitars and couldn't give a toss about scratches or buckle rash.

I do completely agree with you for the most part. But at $1,300 new, my Les Paul Tribute ain't no kiddie guitar. I'll take a Tribute over ANY Epiphone, any day! I got a tribute recently secondhand for £700 and it’s amazing. I’ve had plenty of epiphones and this feels and plays nicer. Sound is great. I’m not big on all the binding and gloss finish on a standard so I chose this path.

Another nice video - I have 2 Tributes; the same Honeyburst one and a Tobacco burst with P90s. I gig them both and I don't get paranoid about losing one/dinging/scratching it as I might with some of my other guitars. They are great tools rather than something you'd hang on the wall. The big difference between this model and a 'higher spec' Epiphone is that the Gibson is going to retain a much larger proportion of its value. Best wishes

Yes, you make good sense, and the long-standing Gibson heritage does make them good investments. I wish I would have kept my 60's models, but I was too young and foolish back in those days, lol. One of my favorite axes for gigs, continues to be my inexpensive 2004 Melody Maker with TOM bridge and dog ear P-90. NOT great on looks, but it's easy to tote, stays in good tune with the narrow headstock, plays and sounds just great, and has got me some nice compliments over the years!

The nitro finish is worth mentioning over the Epiphone. It's thinner, but it'll do all the relicing and ageing thing people like so much

Does he mention maple neck on Tributes? I owned an SG Tribute, had maple neck, and it sounded different than my other Gibson SG Standards with mahogany necks. I sold the tribute cause it sounded less than a regular SG. It kinda sounded like an Epiphone, older one, not bad, but not as good as inspired by Gibson newer Epiphones, they're incredible.

A Gibson LP Tribute was my first Gibson and it put all the Epiphones I have owned and played to shame on terms of tone and feel right out the box. What surprised me the most was the clarity and brightness of the tone, even from the neck pickup. Now I still love Epiphones, but to me the quality of the materials justified the Tribute’s price above the Epiphones.

My bandmate recently bought a used Les Paul 50s Tribute P90 in Black. After I played his, I found the 60s Tribute P90 also in black and promptly bought it for $1100 CAD. While it is not as well finished as any of my RevStars, it has better quality pots and output jack.I must admit that I do like having a Gibson in my collection. I have the tribute with p90s and the 50s Epiphone , being left handed it was difficult to get a tribute with humbuckers however the playability feel and tones of the Gibson are in my personal opinion far superior, hence the epiphone is collecting a little layer of dust 😅

Same here dude.. I am lefthanded and recently bought a tribute. Mine has humbuckers. It absolutely blows my Epiphone out of the water. My Epiphone is a Standard Plus Top. Everything about the Tribute is much better. The sound, the feel, ..everything. I use my Epiphone for alternate tunings now...and use the Tribute for Standard tuning, which I play in about 90% of the time.

I purchased two tributes in 2016.A Gold Top and a Honeyburst.Both have mahogany necks.They both have the thumb prick rings under the volume/tone controls.I love the satin finish and I don’t need plastic binding on the neck and body.Binding doesn’t do anything for the sound.I love the tone,running them through a Valvetrain amp w/ two tens.

Ba humbug. I love tributes. Everything you need and nothing you don't. I have standards, classics, etc.. and i must say the tribute is my favorite. Light weight, great tone, beefy neck, not slathered in sticky lacquer and a fair price. It is a les paul and a damn good one.

You are absolutely right that some epiphone les Pauls are more correct in what is a true Les Paul. And I love all your videos I've watched this one a bunch because I have a Les Paul tribute from Gibson honeyburst, and I have epiphones 59 Les Paul and the inspired by 1955 Les Paul custom by epiphone, and an epiphone Les Paul custom. But I love the tribute I play that one more than the rest of them. This is my first Gibson, I always want a standard but I'm waiting so in my head I can clarify spending 3 grand lol. You get a lot more for £250 less with the Epi 59 including better pickups a mahogany neck, a case, binding and even little touches like the thumb bleeders and proper mother of pearl inlays on the headstock. You could pick up a secondhand Tribute for the same price of a new Epi 59 mind but Id still rather have the Epi. Look forward to your views and review next week to see if you think the same.

Wonderful video as always. I actually bought this guitar a couple of weeks ago. I decided to go with Gibson over Epiphone for several reasons; neck felt better in my hands, better build quality, love the plain look, and most importantly its made in the US rather than China. As hard as it is to do, I avoid sending my money to a country that uses slave labor, ignores patients, and has countless human rights violations. Sure an Epiphone might be a better bang for the buck, but at what cost? I know I'm splitting hairs given Epiphone is own by Gibson, but made in China still makes a difference to me.

Being a Bassist I'm looking for a guitar but not have more the a couple . I'm not sure if a High end epiphone is better then the entry level Gibson . I'm also looking a Fender 70s Vintera Tele with humbuckers .( I really like my Tele baritone cabronita). I really don't like the plug and play wiring I'd rather have the soldered circuits. The plug and play remind me of radio control components not always reliable.

Thanks for the video Colin!, this is my first Gibson, I have been playing Teles all my life. I was ready to replace the circuit board and pickups but after playing it, I decided to leave it alone because it’s sounds good to me as is and the pickups seem to fit the guitar well. The quality and attention to detail in the 2017 model I have is good and the finish is great too. I had. It professionally set up and I think I’ll keep it for a while. It may not scratch the itch like the big brothers as Colin says, but it’s a good look into the humbucker world and a good value. Nothing wrong with this lower end Gibson, I like to think of it as a striped down version of the popular more expensive models and not necessarily lower quality. Many of these cheaper guitars ended up very appreciated decades later, thinking of the juniors, specials, etc

Amazing review Colin, and love your channel. Loved the SG collection videos as well . I got a used SG worn brown recently and had a similar issue on the Nashville style bridge - strings touching the back of the bridge ( even when the tailpiece was raised 3-4 threads out). I’ve now top wrapped the bridge and the guitar feels and plays great ; but I noticed that the tailpiece is slightly tilted forward towards the direction of the string tension ( I’ve flushed it all the way to the body now ). The tailpiece feels tight and solid though , but is the tilt something you’ve noticed as well on your SGs ?(when you top wrap them ) is it of any concern on the long run ? Your views will be of huge help ! Thanks Adi

The tailpiece,bridge ,tuners,switch (and tip), pickguard,Poker chip,output jack(and plate)knobs,strap buttons,back plates,mounting rings are all official Gibson USA parts and are the exact same parts as on the Standards.I seen how they build these in Nashville. The necks, bodies, tops and fretboards are all from the of bottom of the barrel so to speak. What i mean is these are made from are all the pieces of wood that did not make the cut for the more expensive Standards.This all will make sense if you just imagine it from their perspective. Essentially you are getting a USA made guitar with the PLEK'ed neck with most of the parts from the more expensive standards at a drastically reduced cost. A standard cost's $2800 usd while these sell for $1300. That is over 50% less but you are not getting half the guitar in terms of tone and playability compared to the Standard. There is also the Faded Standard which sells for $2500 and like the tribute does not have a gloss finish. in every other way it is a 50's standard but with a satin finish. I went with one of these over the $2800 Standard because a "Gloss" finish is not worth $300 more to me! 😁

I like the dark flecks in the maple top. I was happy when Gibson started commonly using wood like that again in the late 2010s. Especially on these Tributes. To me, as a bit of a Gibson traditionalist, the flecking in the maple looks more like what you might get on an original '58-'60 burst, which just looks more authentic. Not to say that these are supposed to be authentic to the originals, but it's a nice touch. What's impressive for the price is that some of these Tributes can be had with one-piece mahogany backs without any seams. They aren't as common, but I still see them all the time. Also, since the 2017 re-introduction of the current Tribute series, right from the get-go they came with an aluminum Stop tailpiece and a lightweight bridge. All the hardware is plated with nickel too, which I much prefer over chrome. I was really happy to see Gibson move away from using chrome hardware on their more entry level guitars, as I feel nickel looks better as it ages and also compliments the finish of the guitar as it gets worn. I'm also happy to see that Gibson has done away with the dreadfully ugly, rough, pebbled finish on the plastic control cavity covers, and have gone with more traditional smooth finished plates. It just looks so much better, and way less garish. As far as the somewhat drab colour of this example, that seems to be somewhat par for the course for the burst finishes within the Tribute series. The colours can vary quite a bit from one guitar to the next. You have to remember, for new spray booth employees at the Gibson factory, the Tribute series are the first guitars they spray sunburst finishes on after their training. They start with the Tribute series and work their way up as their skills progress. This is both a good thing and a "bad" thing. The "bad" being that the colour and pattern of each guitar isn't always consistent, which leads to some looking good and others looking less than great, like the guitar in the video. However, the good part of this is that since there is quite a varying degree of burst tints and patterns, it has the capability to appeal to a wider range of tastes. As you know, people's "ideal" burst colour varies wildly from person to person. What one person likes may not be what the next person likes. So, given the inconsistent variation of burst colours in the Tribute series, it can also appeal to more people who might like one shade of the Honeyburst finish over another, for example. Same goes for the Iced Tea, Cherry Sunburst and Tobacco Burst finishes in the Tribute range too. They can all vary quite a bit. Overall, I really like the Tribute series. It has a simple, striped-down and un-flashy aesthetic that I really like. I actually think it's one of the coolest Les Pauls in Gibson's lineup. I just really like the open pore satin finish and the reveal "binding" (the unfinished edge of the maple top) it has. Even the unbound neck works on this guitar. Also, while it would normally go against my traditional senses, I also like the fact that it has a maple neck. I find that to be acceptable on an entry-level Gibson, and it also adds a little bit of variation to the Les Paul lineup too, which Gibson can be blamed for not stepping outside the box enough a lot of the time. Overall, these are great guitars.

I enjoyed this video. I have a Gibson "Tribute" guitar: mine is the 60s tribute with P-90 pickups. For weight relief, it is "chambered" rather than having the holes, and has a mahogany neck with the torrified maple fretboard. It has the old-fashioned wiring, with no PCBs in it, and the pots and pickups are all Gibson-branded. It DID come with the "poker chip" on the selector switch. I have to say, I rather like it. I bought it from a chap who had never played it: it still had the plastic film on the pick-guard and the tag in the neck. The woodwork is definitely above reproach: as you observe, the fit and finish is 10/10. The neck is comfortable, apparently "PLECK"-ed at the factory. The P-90s sound great: I've always been a single-coil man so they suit my style quite well anyway. As for being a "real" Les Paul, well I suppose that is indeed subjective. It's a Les-Paul branded and Gibson-built guitar. As an instrument there is nothing about it that lacks quality. As a working man, I can't quite get my mind around paying twice again as much for a binding job and more varnish, which to me is basically what the Standard would be. Built by the same guys in the same factory. The standard is a much nicer piece of furniture. As for being a much nicer instrument? How could that be possible, given the similarities?

Your other comparison videos had me convinced the Epiphones where as good, or close enough for the money as Gibsons. I decided to go to GC and try them out. I went to guitar center to play the top of the line Epiphone🎉 Les Paul/Gibson Custom Shop Collaboration. Then I played the Gibson Les Paul Tribute and the Gibson blew all the Epiphone's away. And Poo Brown as you described it, nope, I loved the Tribute, it's beautiful. All the same, I love your videos. You're fun to watch and your playing is inspirational. Thanks for the videos.

In 2015 where I live I couldn’t find a white SG Junior with specs like this new, Gibson or off-brand. I did find a 64 original locally (very unusual here) for crazy money and it had issues. So I found a cheap SG Special copy that had the neck profile I wanted and had good resonance, weight and balance. I stripped it back to bare wood, filled the neck pickup cavity, spent twice the cost of the guitar itself on a custom wiring loom in 50s wiring, a boutique to order P90, and painted it myself with a thin finish. It has aged nicely. It’s all the SG Junior I will ever need and resale is not an issue. It broke the myth for me that only the original brand could really deliver the experience I wanted. I was focused on the specs and playing experience and the visual style, minus the close up recognition of the brand logo. I could have faked the faceplate of the headstock but decided having something unique to me was preferable. It also convinced me the real only non-negotiable elements in any guitar you buy are the bits you can’t change: the neck, weight, balance, and resonance. I will never buy another guitar that compromises on those elements regardless of brand or vintage.

Another great review, back in 2013, I bought a LP 50s tribute in tobacco burst. No scratchplate, fitted with P90s. The finish isn't that great and it is a lump, close on 9lbs, no weight relief. I am a lefty and bought it from GAK in Brighton and i think i paid £600 for it. Apart from the weight issue, it's a great guitar, I still have it. Unplugged it sounds so resonant. My friend has a LP Studio, and he admits it knocks the socks off his. I might just have been lucky, but i certainly would't writr them off. Thanks again for your brilliant reviews. Al Bury.

You play very well, and I enjoy your laid back, but honest style. However, IMHO, despite the name, this guitar is much more than a "tribute" to a Les Paul. it is indeed a proper Les Paul at an unbelievable price. Checklist: (1) a made-in-USA Gibson, that will hold its value more than any contemporary Epiphone copy > Check. (2) Mahogany body with a real (not veneer) maple cap > Check. (3) Rosewood fingerboard > Check. (4) Great sounding Gibson USA (490 series) pickups > Check. (5)These are all PLEK'd by Gibson (an almost $300 value) just like their far-more-expensive big brothers > Check. (6) Nitrocellulose (not polyurethane) lacquer > Check. (7) Nashville Tune-O-Matic bridge with Stopbar > Check. (8) Many of the new ones are well over 8 pounds, notwithstanding that they are "weight relieved" (see, e.g., the ones currently available on the Sweetwater website) > Check.

I've had my Tribute since 2017.. It's a wonderful guitar. The only thing I upgraded was I replaced the Gibson Deluxe tuners w matching "Grover Deluxe" tuners. I also gutted the pcb electronics, and got it properly 50s wired. It's now a lifer. Mine also stays in tune like a champ, and the stock dual 490s that came w the 2017s just sing! I have the goldtop version.

I have the 2018 Gibson Les Paul Tribute Goldtop. The neck is mahogany. The bridge has a 498T. Having Standards, Classics and Customs, I can tell you with certainty that it is a proper Les Paul. It is one of the smoothest Les Pauls I’ve ever played. Great sound. Easy to play through a complete gig, unlike some of my Standards and Customs. Blessings to you!

Went shopping this weekend for what will likely be my last guitar purchase unless I unload some. I’m a bedroom guitarist with disposable income and already had 6 guitars. This is the 7th and that’s all that will fit in my hercules rack anyway ;-). I was looking to buy an American or Canadian made guitar, maybe Japanese if all else failed and was originally shopping for the Gibson LP Standard, Fender Strat Professional II or an ESP EII Eclipse. Then I started watching this channel and others and added the Gibson LP Classic, Studio and Tribute to my shopping list. The shop I went to does not carry ESP guitars and Fender was my last choice so I tried the Gibson guitars they had in stock, namely 2 Tributes, a Studio and a Standard. All played well and sounded good. There was really anything noticeably different between the 3 except for the binding, paint jobs and the electronics. Here in Canada a Tribute is $1600 and a Standard is $3500. To my hands and ears there wasn’t a $1900 worth of difference between the two guitars to justify buying the Standard. Took the Tribute home and played it quite a bit over the weekend and am very happy with my purchase. It’s the best feel and arguably better sounding guitars out of the other 6 I have which are a made in Japan Fernandes that is basically a Fender Strat with hotter pickups and a Floyd Rose, a 2015 Epiphone Standard Pro, a 2022 Epiphone Les Paul Prophecy (Fishman pickups), Schecter Reaper 6, a Shecter Solo 2 Custom and a LTD EC-1000. Fret work on mine is really good same with action and intonation. The only little thing is what seems like a small ding in the wood which would have been there before the patin job. For the rest, everything seems really good and it a very fun guitar to play and is not something I would qualify as a beginner guitar. If this is your beginner guitar, you are definitely starting ahead of many other new guitar players that’s for sure. I really have no complaints thus far and am glad I settled for the Tribute. I’ll just use what I saved on that guitar for something else!
