There is no way to prove its claptons.serial number? I can't be sure.either can you. I have several friends who might own it going by your aspects.we can tell what year it is. I have a 81 les paul by serial Numbers and a 2020 sg, I ALWAYS BUY NEW,THAT HELPS! When you break the neck, good luck trying to sell that axe.you would be lucky to get a fifth of price.the neck is so important, its always going to have problems l fear.

Possibly, but it is worth considering that a headstock break might have been replaced with a remade headstock - so no serial number. Paul Kossoff's 59 is the same, broken stock replaced by a custom stock - no serial number.

I can appreciate that obsession takes you down a few roads, but: You are DEAD WRONG about your statement that a broken neck could conceivably "Help" a guitar's sound. Whether or not it becomes 'stronger', the flow along the grain of the wood that transports the vibration of the strings is forever clipped by any breakage. If Jimmy Page's is like that, it is absolutely irrelevant what he thinks it's effect is, since he's a tone-moron. Additionally, there is NO WAY you can tell by cursory observation, just how adroitly any given 'reset' gluing has been enacted on the neck. Gluing only makes a neck 'stronger' IF it is done in a most skillful way. In the majority of cases, the impact of the fall shatters the wood in the neck, making at tonally physical reset out-of-the realm of possibility. That is why, modern necks have a large 'bump at the neck/headstock joint, so that they stand a chance of surviving a knock onto the floor, without breaking at just that point. Most guitarists who get that breakage ditch that guitar as a mainstay. If Clapton's Beano guitar is ever found, it has likely been modified/reworked beyond retrieval of it's iconic sonic impact. As for your obsession with the details of the differences between various guitar's years, you fail to to obey the Cardinal rule of historical summary, and abstain from tone irrelevancy: The type of knobs on a guitar has no impact on its sound, nor does nearly any detail about its finish, unless it's finished in a layer of creosote. No Gibson or Fender bridge from that era was intonated properly, and all need to be updated with an appropriate one that will give it accurate intonation, increased sustain, and wider frequency range. Tuners? I'll save that for another day, but 'vintage tuners' have never been where it's at! Clapton has stated that: "All Marshall's sound different." Of course they do, because, as Jim Marshall has stated, he's had to scour the world for parts, that come and go 'out-of-stock' to keep up with demand for his amps. Only boutique amp builder's like Howard Dumble have ever done enough research on just what kind of components to use in a given guitar amplifier. The guitar that Slowhand played on 'Beano' was mainly notable for it's strong treble bite. Actually, very few LP's have that characteristic, so the hunt-goes-on for just how to get that kind of attack, sustain, and tone that he had, because, as he's stated that he got that sound without any treble-booster pedal employed, only referencing that he used the bridge pickup. Lastly I'm going to make the point, that the entire concept of 'vintage' amps and 'vintage' guitars in a complete misnomer, because it implies that, like fine wines, there is something inherently magical in the aging process of the physical instruments/amps. This is BULLSH*T!!! There is none! The only reason that expression ever got traction, is from SOME superior manufacturing techniques, parts, or wiring, etc. etc. that were employed (at times sporatically) in the days of yore. So little is actually known about just how each and every, often hand built guitar or amp was assembled, often varying from item to item, that it is a daunting task to theorize about just what did, in fact, impact the tone and playability of the gear of yore. P.S. The first electric guitar ever invented by Les Paul himself (there was no other), was as 4" by 4" block of wood with tuners at one end, a bridge at the other, and a phonograph needle 'stuck' into the wood to generate an amplifiable signal. The practice of 'set-necks' from Gibson, and 'bolt-ons' from Fender was ENTIRELY a compromise in quality and craftmanship with the desire to save money in manufacturing, enabling companies to sell at a lower price-point. A thru-neck guitar, just as the first electric guitar was, yields tremendous improvements in sustain, frequency response, tonality, upper fret access, and playability, to all other approaches. It just costs more money to build, but is far less so with today's manufacturing methods. Therefore, I don't even look in Gibson's or Fender's direction for a quality, uncompromised tonally superior instrument.

Respectfully if you do not understand the physics in pulling a wire in a straight line as opposed to bending it around a corner you must not have been a very good professor! If you play jazz guitar and never bent a string then you not stretching the string string stretch from their anchor points for the brake angle definitely makes a difference.

Top-wrapping should decrease the _downward_ force of the strings from force vectors as the break-angle decreases, no? Whether that makes any difference to the feel of the strings or the body resonance they pick up through the bridge, I don't know. I top-wrap. And it's satisfying to have the tailpiece screwed down flat. But I don't claim it makes any difference to feel or tone. I do it because it's kind of fun. Which is a damn good reason.

If this can be proven to be a stolen Clapton guitar, then under UK law it belongs to him still. AFAIK there is no statue of limitations on theft (or anything else for that matter) in the UK, so even though it was 50 plus years ago it doesn’t matter. Of course, proving it would be next to impossible probably. Top wrap for me all day long by the way.

Nice guitar my friends, ps i had a 59 les paul jr Tobbaco sunburst and i had it leaning against my white Marshall stack and it fell over and the headstock broke off. cause back in the 70s my Jr was purchased from my dads guitar player and i had it fixed by one of the only certified luthers and amp repairs in Chicago, Il ps i still have my flame top 59 that my dad gave me when i was seven........

One area of guitar identification that often gets overlooked is the uniqueness of the fret marker inlays. The markers on Les Pauls are helpful in this area due to their large size. The individuality of each inlay is often captured very well in photographs and as both missing instruments would have been photographed many times this may help you guys further with your investigations. Good luck, and thanks for a very enjoyable video.

The real reason to top wrap is related to the fact that some set ups cause the strings to sit on the edge of the bridge due to the angle coming out of the tail piece. The angle plus that tension / friction against the bridge will cause the string to snap at that point of contact. So if you don't want to raise your tail piece, then top wrap is your next option. Case closed.

I've got news for Physics Boomer on the left. I may not have a degree in engineering, but I have played guitar for over 20 years and top wrapping does alter the sound. You hear less of the fundamental, and more of the string itself. It notches the tone closer to the PRS / Fender-y side of the spectrum.

Hi, I saw that already some people mentioned that this likely is not the Summers Burst, as it is (was) lately owned by Drew Berlin, one of the Burst Brothers (vintage Les Paul collectors/dealers). Let me give you guys some more details about what public information is available: In the Burst Believers II book, which was published by Vic DaPra in 2014, Drew wrote a feature article on this very guitar on page 14 and 15 where he explains the story of the Summers Burst guitar, featuring high resolution pictures of its current state. Here is quoted what he had to say about its time after Clapton: "Okay, so it's clear that this Burst was used on Fresh Cream, but why was it not used again in the rest of Cream's short-lived career? In trying to understand these facts for myself, I traced the path this Burst took to New York City, 1967, where Eric and Cream were at the time. The road crew dropped the Fresh Cream/Summers Burst, and the headstock broke off. They then brought it to Dan Armstrong to have it repaired. He in turn, gave it to the best luthier in New York City, for whom no job was impossible. His name is Matt Umanov. Matt was very young when he discovered his talent for luthiery. The combination of his skills and talent were brought to the attention of world-class guitar players in need of the best sounding instruments. He quickly gained the reputation as the go-to guy in the New York area for restoration and repair of pre-war to current musical instruments. So Matt was clearly the guy to turn to in this situation. So here's where the story gets interesting. When Dan Armstrong asked Matt to take up the challenge and repair the broken headstock, Matt realised at the time that the headstock could no longer be grafted back on to the guitar, due to the severity of the break. He then asked Dan if he could get creative with this project, to which Dan gave his approval. With Matt's history of passion and appreciation for pre-war Gibson mandolins, he thought it would be cool to replace the headstock with a Gibson F4 mandolin headstock. And so it was to be." The article ends at this point and doesn't give any further details on what happened after the repair, and why or when Clapton didn't use the guitar any more after the repair, however the photos in the book show details of the headstock. It is as described by Drew a flourished F4-mandolin styled headstock, with Eric Clapton inlayed instead of the Gibson Logo and a weird looking inlay, which seems to be a shilouette of a female head wearing a laurel wreath or crown, like some design one would find on an old metal coin. There is also a high resolution picture of the figuring on the top on this guitar, next to the black and white picture of Andy Summers playing it, and the grain matches up pretty well, not to mention open coil double black PAFs as Clapton used to play it. Honestly, I find the headstock weird and that might be a reason that Eric let it go, but the Burst itself is incredible. Crazy figuring, intense tomato soup colouring and of course highest provenance.

Now with top wrap it may slip thru the bridge when you bend giving the sense of less tension, BUT you have to bend further to get to pitch, Oh yea, that requires tension! HA HA! So many myths on the internet. Like pots sounding different, or capacitors, or a 6 inch piece of wire! OR, YES, WOOD DOESN'T MATTER! Late to this party but just to add my 2 cents. There are 2 pictures (at 31.13 & 32.55) of Clapton playing a burst that has no poker chip and no knurled retaining nut. If the guitar in question is one of these guitars that might explain why the poker chip is a replacement and why it has a hex nut instead of the correct knurled nut. It also has black bobbins on the Bridge pick up like this guitar has.

Hey, I found something you might be interested in from Gibson themselves. I was looking at Gibson Custom 60th anniversary Les Paul and this is what the description said: Les Paul standards from the first third of 1960 (V1) had the same specs as their 1959 counterparts, while the middle (V2) introduced thinner neck profiles, different knobs and brighter colors. The final third (V3) brought about some of the thinnest necks Gibson ever produced, accompanied by wide, colorfast sunburst finishes. That's from Gibson themselves so I hope this helps.

Very informative video in any case. Doesn't Joe Bonomassa purport to know the location of the "Beano Burst" in America NOT the UK? I may be the other burst that Andy Summers sold Clapton. In any event that guitar was definitely stolen at some point.

@@TheGuitarShow did you try the pencil trick where you put a piece of paper over what you are trying to see and take a pencil and use the side of the graphite point of the to rub on the paper. it there is any indentation left at all this will definitely show what was there.

Most enjoyable! Top-wrapping does give about a 1/2 inch more of string, no? Not playable string, but still more. As far as perceived feel, perhaps could contribute to slightly more “slink”?

Without watching the whole thing, the Summers burst had a headstock break that was ultimately unrepairable. I recall reading somewhere (probably on one of those Les Paul forums) that the guitar has been identified and it does have a replaced neck with no serial number. As far as the Beano is concerned, I'd bet that DZ has it in his collection, and Joe B. knows it and somebody got in his ear and made him walk back his comments.

Looking at how the back plates are sitting proud, you’d have to assume it’s a full refin, unless there’s so much overspray on the shoulders of the cavities that it’s making them sit proud. My 2cents.

2 more huge telltale signs you didn't go into - the neck tenon on the tomato soup 60 Les Pauls (later 1960) were a short cut off tenon as opposed to a 59 with the long tenon. That would instantly tell you the year or at least give you a better idea. Also the original neck pickup bobbin colour as the tomato soup 60 would only be black coils as on the summer's/fresh cream burst. On late 1960 Les Pauls, the reflector knobs would also be there as on the summer's guitar, but as the pots have been messed with and one changed, it'd be feasible that the original knobs were also changed.

Just very good repros. Not that it matters as it's a bit like a painter doing a good copy of a Van Gogh or Rembrandt. Eric's original style is copied by everyone now but it's not original. The guitar isn't the star to be fair. You couldn't give them away back in 1962. I have an original 65 Les Paul burst.very valuable only 2 of them ever made.

You guys got the trash. There is a picture of Lennnons 325 Rickenbacker 3 years before he bought as new in Hamburg. The picture is in Andy Babiuks book with Toots Thielmans. American companys would go to Namm, and sell the stuff they could not unload and ship it to the UK. It was already old. You guys got the SHAFT!

Awesome guitar, honestly it could be Lil Waynes guitar(not that he could play it) but honestly it doesnt matter cause that is a beautiful old Les Paul in a somewhat original state. Love your videos and keep up the investigation, even if it isn't Eric's guitar you might just find that holy grail.

Dick Knight, a British luthier, was making sun burst copies in 72 (I'm told, but fat lot I know). I think he made one for Keef, as well as a few others. That's where (and when) mine is from. His work tends to fall apart at the seem, which is how a few of his have been exposed.
