tap water since 1967! Often out of the end of a hose while I was growing up and not allowed in the house between 8am and 9pm during summer. Wife has convinced me to install a RO system and a softener system with our new addition I am building (90% done). As soon as the cabinets are set, I will purchase and begin installing both systems, likely in the next 3 wks from now (Nov'23). I will let you know if the filtered makes the tap become pond. It will be an interesting test! Thanks Handy! You are indeed a peach among pears. -- UPDATE for you Handy 4/29/24....Installed an APEK system (5 filters and a pH adjuster) in the basement and fed lines up to faucet (and icemaker). Tested water. Went from 350ppm tap to 30ppm filtered water. We are so much healthier. Thank you DR HANDY. You are an inspiration!

Tap water varies greatly by region/state and if you use a well. There is no magic bullet except for what is local to you and your area and what makes sense for filtration if you want to save money over using bottled water.

I put that brand in with the booster pump. I put the stage 2 filter in upside down. Water would not pass through it. Pressure built up and was almost impossible to take back off. Made a mess, at least it was in the garage. My wife watched in comedic disbelief. LOL

First off, tap water quality is highly dependent on where you live. Second, who cares....if the customer wants a Hi-C fountain installed and is willing to pay up, great. Its not your job to tell them how to live, just do the job, make the money, and move on.

@stefanmi1- Ok.. you sound like you don't have a company that requires repeat business. IF the customer wants something that is bumb or not needed, I will for sure try and talk them out of it. That's a primary way to gain respect and a customer for life. Because, two years later when that customer finds out he's been played by some stupid thing he heard or seen, he's going to wonder why, you as a professional, did not talk them out of said thing. With that being said, I will for sure install whatever the customer needs if they are 100% sure they want it.

TDS Meter doesn’t tell the whole story but it’s a good start. There are good minerals that are good for you that will cause a higher TDS reading. Most of these filtration systems strip both the good and the bad. Look for systems that also recharge the water with beneficial minerals. Look at Pristine Hydro’s Water Revival System…..much more expensive than these store or Amazon bought units, but essentially the best I could find. They are at the very least assembled in USA, but I suspect many of the parts are produced elsewhere. Your channel is one of my favorites…been watching for at least a couple years now. Cheers for posting great content and helping others!

Hi great channel. Just a few comments on tap water water quality. Tap or municipal provided water is required to meet basic water quality standards by local/state health departments. These domestic water quality standards (the National Primary Drinking Regulations) are set by the EPA. There is a large list of compounds and metals that the provider are required to sample for to demonstrate compliance with the EPA rule. Generally, those municipal water suppliers send to their customers (or otherwise make available) the results of periodic sampling of their water. Just make a inquiry to your water supplier. As to evaluating Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), the domestic water standard is 500 milligrams per liter (mg/L) or less. TDS measures natural metals and other compounds such as sodium (Na), magnesium (Mg) and sulfate (SO4) and is primarily related to taste and odor issues. The pre-filter measurement that you collected was below 500 mg/L and within the regulatory compliance requirement. Water provided by a home water wells is, in most states, exempt from the water quality standards requirements.

Most of the chemicals that are put into tap water are there to protect and maintain the cities plumbing network. If you think tap water is better for your health than filter water then knock yourself out drinking it. I don't like the taste of tap water so I filter mine, no big deal. People do tons of things that they believe are good for their health that I think is actually bad for their health. I'm just glad that we still get to make the decision of doing what we think is best for our health.

RO water is good but it also removes ALL the good minerals from the water that our bodies need. You need to replace those minerals with an additive. Best to fill up a glass pitcher with the RO water and mix back in your minerals, and drink from the pitcher.

I recently installed another RO at new house, If i remember correctly the manual (changed from previous) and didn't want you to install RO discharge after disposal. I purchased a little Y fitting so the dishwasher and RO drain into disposal. Perhaps they're scared the disposal will jam some dirty water up the RO drain and make it back to the filters? Not a big shark bite guy but i do think there 1/4 turn valves are pretty legit considering the shutoff always go first and always need to be replaced....they sell a double port shut off in various sizes that i hooked the RO to via compression fitting.

Just an observation. Usually the black tubing is for the feed water to the RO system, the blue line for the filtered water to the little faucet, and the red line is for the waste/drain water. You did real good installing the drain saddle on the horizontal drain pipe from the garbage disposal, when installed on a vertical line the dribbling flow of drain water can be very annoying to some customers. I usually ensure that about a 1/4" of the drain line actually protrudes into the drain pipe through the saddle, that way you virtually eliminate any chance of a leak (if you drill a tight 1/4" hole into the drain pipe.) Those filters will need to be changed at least annually, and the membrane about every 4-5 years, or when the post filter TDS gets above 50 ppm. Great job Mr. Handyman!

I had one of these installed beneath my kitchen sink for about a year. Black was for the waste line, blue was the output, line and red was the input. line They had a decent rating, but there's a reason they come with a cheap flood detector to shut off the red line incase of a leak. That thing sprung a leak twice in under a year.

I installed the $200 Apec one, but made mo'ar better. I need higher amounts of water for home gunsmithing business, humidifiers, cold brew coffee, etc. Put in basement. I got a second 4gal potable water expansion tank, mounted both tanks with the threaded male down like a well pressure tank. The original tank is installed as intended, before the last charcoal filter. The second tank is after the last filter. This gives me a good number of gallons immediately, thanks to the air pressure of the tanks and the capacity. I'm soon switching the faucet out with a Menards one that claims max GPM of 4.9gal @60psi. Should be better. Also, I bypassed the $$ fridge filter so nice high flow and volume also comes out of the fridge door. I used 3/8" OD poly tubing in place of 1/4" everywhere I could. Customer service for Apex told me one of the elbow fittings on the plastic filter housing contains a check valve. Was worried about backflow. May still add a separate check valve.
@TheHandyman1

The biggest problem I have is low flow when I run them to refrigerators. Did you take the back of the fridge apart to bypass the filter?
@cavscout888
@cavscout888 9 ай бұрын
@@TheHandyman1 Once the back cover was off, it was pretty easy to see what was going on. I ran a new 3/8" line to reduce resistance too. Factory line sizes inside fridge were standard 1/4" and 3/8" OD poly tubing, and all connections on valve and filter body were push-connect and standard. I simply reorganized to go straight from line-side to valve, then valve straight to ice and water. Filter housing is empty, completely dry, and abandoned in place.

@@TheHandyman1 And also, I also mounted to plywood, but hung from joist over softener, with both tanks on one side, filter assembly on other side. To mount tanks, I used the ~$15 hose-clamp-style expansion tank 'brackets.' Meant exactly for the task and seem to be 100%. Would cut way down on fabrication time (IF that's a factor for you on this).
@cavscout888

@@TheHandyman1 I take it back, in a ~2007 mfg Whirlpool fridge, flow is still crap. The 'reservoir' is literally 100ft roll of 1/4" OD poly tube sitting behind crisper drawers. Resistance will always be high, so I'll ignore mine. Only about 16oz of cold water in that tubing... Easy to change but idk if I care for my fridge. Could change out easily for 50ft of 3/8" tubing for same volume and probably much better flow.

Arizona tap water is very hard (due to its source being mainly the Colorado river, with all its mineral deposits). I use a Brita filter for drinking water, and I will also use this for cooking rice or pasta. But it does not taste _shockingly_ bad and I don't think it's a health hazard by any means. There have been places where the tap water tastes like a swimming pool, or even has a metallic taste. Obviously, there are news stories about contamination (Flint, MI, for a start), and we are spared any scandal like that.

There are NO gfci outlets under sinks. Very common miss conception about what a wet area is.

It seems like its more for hard water. And they have a system that doesn't remove the minerals. I don't have any experience with it.

You cannot generalize with "tap water". It varies from place to place. From source to source. Well to well. Don't generalize. Your videos are great, but that is dumb info. I am a subscriber because I like your practial approach and insight into the business. Keep the quality up.

Eh, I'm not that smart to know the science behind what is good and bad from tap water (depending on your area). I just drink it cause it's very cheap and tastes fine to me, and continue to make money. I 1000% do judge people who buy cases and cases of bottled water every month yet can't explain why when I ask though.

I agree w/most things from this channel, but for starters - don't take advice from the guy who makes money installing something you didn't need in the first place. Also, sure it can depend on where you live, some areas do have dangerous tap water, but it's few and far, most of the country has decent to great tap water! And just like how using too much hand sanitizer is a bad thing, same for water. Your body needs "some" bacteria, helps it build a stronger immunity. Also, the handyman is sick like 10 times a year, including clearly sick in his video a couple days ago, so food for thought.
