You know you are a true wrestling fan if you sat here and listened to 90 minutes of Flair stories. I found this quite enjoyable and interesting, as there is rarely a medium no opinion answer. In Wrestling, you get two ends of extremes. Either Flair is Great and appreciated or he's a Horses Ass and a backstabber. Personally, if I met him in my wild days while he was a horseman, I would have bought him a few rounds. In my older years, he just gets respect for what he did for the business.

Strange as it may sound, I'm not so much interested in stories about Ric Flair as much as I just like seeing some of the guys from what was one of my favorite times in wrestling. I have to give major, major props to these guys because I realize NOW just how talented they were in their business: Tully Blanchard and Larry Zbysko were two guys that I hated with a passion and fantasized about getting in the ring and beating their faces in...and seeing them now as "regular working guys", I have to sheepishly laugh at myself and give props to how well they portrayed their in-ring personas. Seeing so many of these guys from the heyday of NWA - those sweet two-hour Saturday TV studio jobber segments! - as "real people" is something that is absolutely awesome to me; I've sat here and laughed and stared at so many of them. Thank you again for sharing these interviews with us, and thanks to all the guys who were willing to share their stories of what life was actually like behind the ring.

Believe it or not in 2022 in this snapshot a very young and thoroughly corporate AWA interviewer Eric Bischoff blandly offers the Mic to the customarily yammering Larry Zbyszko as AWA Champ. Larry Z.'s Tag Team partner Tully Blanchard glares into the camera with smug disregard. Two things to keep in mind: Zbyszko later teamed with Arn Anderson to win The WCW Tag Team Championships (giving Anderson and Blanchard yet another common partner). I just got done listening to Gary Harts version of this story, and he was Al's manager at that time. He said since this match was in Florida and Al had all his family there that night, Al went to the booker and told him straight out he was shooting on flair that night and was going to pin him for the title. I forgot who the booker was, but the booker went and told Gary what Al said he was going to do and told Gary to go and talk to Al and straighten it out. When Gary went to Al and asked if this was true, Al said it sure was and he wasnt going to change his mind. Gary begged him to please dont do this but he wasnt going to change his mind. So what happened was, come match time, Gary didnt come out to ringside so because Gary didnt come out, they made an announcement saying this match wouldnt take place because in the contract, Gary had to be at ringside for this match and since he didnt come out, the match was cancelled and Flair ended up wrestling someone else. Gary was pissed because although he really liked Al and was his manager, there was no way he was going to double cross Ric, a guy he said he loved!! Just got done hearing this from Gary himself from his book so Al Perez is lying right here. To bad because i was also a big fan of Al's work.

You have some of this right. Al was going to shoot on Flair by stretching him out, he told Kevin Sullivan (The booker.) who took it back to Gary Hart, Crockett was the promoter but Sullivan handled it. Gary told him not to do it since it wasn’t how business is done. Al refused to listen to him. Gary told the office what was going to happen and they told him to stay home and they’d take care of it. They fired him in the ring due to exactly what you said, Gary Hart no showed the event as per instructed by Crockett. They had security, not kayfabe security, real security, take Perez out of the match and he was immediately fired. Eddie Gilbert was the substitute for the championship match. Al Perez was a lose cannon, he threaten to break Sting’s legs because he viewed him as a complete prima donna and every wrestler not named Flair as his personal jobber. You’re not going to go far in wrestling intentionally hurting top of the card wrestlers and champions.

You can tell these guys took some hard bumps because their memories are sometimes a bit hazey. Jim Crockett, Sr. died in 1973 when Flair was still a rookie in the AWA. Sorry, Mr. (Ron) Fuller, but it had to be Jimmy, Jr. you talked to if it was in 1975. I know I might get some flack for this comment, but I've been a pro wrestling fan for 53 years and I remember when Jim Sr. died and Flair started. Flair would go to Mid-Atlantic in '74.
