@@BooRayWiscoTrue that. Lots of predators begin eating while the prey is still alive and kicking. Coyotes kill mature death through blood loss and shock from multiple bite wounds during extended chases. “Old age” deaths are due to starvation from worn down, ineffective teeth.

I had the exact same thing ! Trailed him 418 yards went back in at daylight he got up and I couldn’t get a shot so we just waited for him to bed back down ! We heard a guy hooping and hollering about 80 yards we went up there and a bow hunter shot him and he spined him. He was so excited that he shot him. He truly believes he killed him ! Everyone was really upset at him and I just said if he wants him that bad he’ll have such a great story to tell his grandkids ! We have always went by first blood claims the deer. There’s NO DOUBT he was going to die soon but ! Guys don’t be an ass. Go by first blood and that solves everything. A good guess I’d say between 160” and 170” 12 point. We tracked him that far and never came close to losing blood. Nice deer Jake congratulations ! Y’all did everything right !!

Without y’all’s patience, you would of never recovered that deer and not sure he would of died from the shot but probably the coyotes would of finally caught him and ended it that way so thank you for showing such sportsmanship in recovering this amazing buck. Congratulations.

But honest question wouldn’t it be better as sportsman to end the deers agony and shoot after shooting light? I would imagine it’s illegal because of how easy it would be to misexecute the finishing shot in the dark. Not just taking the shot but confirming it’s the same deer as the one you wounded. Also for DNR sake I would think hearing shots at dark is a good indicator of illegal harvesting.
