The two biggest NASCAR controversies I remember was: NASCAR blaming Dale Earnhardt’s death on the failure of Simpson seat belts. It caused Bill Simpson to sell him company in shame when Dale’s death was a perfect storm of various things, including the major possibility that Dale had unbuckled his Simpson belts himself. Simpson would later start a new safety products company and many drivers that trusted Simpson products before followed Bill to his new company. Next was Eel River Racing. Eel River was a small one car team that raced from 1999 to 2001. In 2001 they were without a sponsor and it was rumored that Crown Royal liquor had tentatively agreed to a sponsorship. NASCAR said no since they had never allowed hard liquor sponsorships. As a result the team shut down due to lack of money. The next season CR showed up on one of Jack Roush’s cars, which was the dominant Ford team at that time. It made NASCAR look like they only cared about the big teams and didn’t care about the “field fillers”.

The Eel Racing was a total sham. Racehub? Whatever show at the time covered it. Jayski had it. IT was all over and it was such a sham how they killed that deal then POOF. Jack needed a sponsor and suddenly Crown Royal was on his car and Jack Daniels was on RCR.

I get what NASCAR was/is trying to do with the crash clock, but it could be avoided by just not allowing teams to haphazardly attached entire body panels to the car after a crash. The team official on pit road should force the teams to make more adequate repairs and that would solve the problem. But as is the case most of the time, NASCAR took the lazy way out.

I don’t know if you would call it a controversy but definitely a dumb call by NASCAR. 1990 Richmond when NASCAR fined and deducted points from Mark Martin over the engine spacer being welded instead of bolted. There was no advantage gained by that but penalty was still imposed. Yes I am salty because Mark lost that championship after the infraction but regardless of that has to be the stupidest penalty ever imposed by NASCAR.

Dumb controversy was Kasey Kahne 2014 Daytona 500. He was trying to dodge a wreck and entered pit road. He was penalized for something not his fault

One of the dumbest to me was the Tabasco Fiasco, ISM were mismanaging the team, they had repeated DNQ's with their Tabasco sponsored #35 Pontiac. The team was sold to Tim Beverly just before Indianapolis in 1998 after ISM went through driver after driver (they had Tod Bodine, Wally Dallenbach, Gary Bradbury, Jimmy Horton and Loy Allen either attempting to qualify or running races after Bodine was fired after Sonoma). They brought in Darrell Waltrip after he had sold his own team to that same Tim Beverly and ran as a relief driver at DEI for Steve Park. The controversy really arose though after Waltrip drove the #35 Tabasco sponsored car at Indianapolis...which was run as a Chevrolette, not a Pontiac. Despite the fact that DW had a past champion's provisional, meaning that they would actually start the races, and the Chevy performed better than the Pontiac immediately, Tabasco sued the team as it not only wasn't the driver they invested in, Tod Bodine, but with the Chevy being run, it rendered their promotional material (featuring the Pontiac in a cook book amongst other promotional material) obsolete. To appease the sponsor, they switched back to the Pontiac and their performance suffered as a result. How could this have been avoided? There are 2 ways to me, firstly, if Bob Hansher of ISM hadn't started the chain of events that dragged the sponsor through the mud, Tabasco wouldn't have backed out of the sport like they did. Equally, if the sponsor had been less particular about the type of car, then they would have enjoyed promotion of their product for better reasons than squabbling about the car featured in their promotional material

Brandon’s could’ve been avoided if NASCAR did victory lane interviews and Kelli Stavast didn’t create the now infamous quote. While they were not truly side by side Smith was nevertheless there. By the time Stewart threw the block Smith's left front was alongside Stewart's right rear. And had Smith kept his line, Stewart would have gotten turned. The only question really is whether Smith should have stayed below the line for as long as he did. That'd be the only somewhat acceptable excuse to rid him of that win. But the way he got down there, he definitely got forced.

Here are my top 10 worst NASCAR controversies 10. Ricky Rudd spinning Davey Allison for the lead on the final lap in 1991 at what was then called Sears Point Raceway and is now called Sonoma Raceway, and Rudd ended up not winning the race. This move has happened many times before and after, and that move by NASCAR has never happened before and since. Rudd's team was absolutely right in being angry at NASCAR. 9. Regan Smith disqualified of a win at Talladega in 2008 because he went below the yellow line. And this is coming from a Tony Stewart fan. While I was happy that Tony won at Talladega, I felt so bad for Regan Smith and that 01 team. At least he was able to get a single win at Darlington in 2011. 8. Kasey Kahne being penalized for speeding on pit road in the 2014 Daytona 500 when he was trying to avoid being wrecked by Michael Annett. 7. Buschwacking. The one that takes the cake was at the Milwaukee Mile in 2007 when Denny Hamlin won the race despite Aric Almirola starting the race. I feel like Almirola should have been in the car the whole time and Denny should have stayed at Sonoma. 6. The Wendell Scott story. Now I understand the whole dilema going on in the South in the 50s and 60s, and what NASCAR did was essentially right for the time. Wendell Scott was an African American driving for a racing tour that was essentially full of white drivers. Scott got his first and only career win at Jacksonville in 1964. Keep in mind that this was the 1960s South, and NASCAR was in a tough spot because they feared that if Scott had kissed the white trophy girl, there would be massive protests and riots going on all across the country. So they essentially "gave" the win to Buck Baker, who finished the race in second place. Scott would eventually be credited with a win, and the family would get the check and the trophy years later. It's an interesting story. But at the same time, I definitely feel like Scott definitely got screwed by having the second place finisher do the Victory Lane celebration. 5. Brett Bodine's win at North Wilkesboro Speedway in 1990. This screw-up essentially changed NASCAR scoring forever. 4. Carl Edwards getting screwed at the 2006 Budweiser Shootout. I really have nothing else to add on to that. 3. "Digger". For those that don't know what I'm talking about, in the late 2000s and early 2010s, NASCAR on Fox had a mascot in the form of a computer animated gopher. He was named "Digger", and was first used as Fox's corner turn camera. He was so popular that he was given his own set of shorts that would be played during the pre-race show, as well as toys and merchandising. While the character was popular with kids (sort of like Lightning McQueen), there was huge opposition with longtime fans, who felt the character was too goofy, and was essentially the start of NASCAR on Fox's decline in popularity. Because of this, the character began phasing out during the 2011 season and by the 2013 Daytona 500, it was no longer a thing. 2. Everything related to NASCAR and politics. 1. NASCAR not paying attention to driver's safety until the aftermath of Dale Earnhardt's death in 2001.

When it comes to politics in nascar, I think that's a complicated topic. Greg Abbott being at the Texas All Star Race makes sense, he's the Governor of Texas after all. In 2011 when Michelle Obama and Jill Biden were there for the championship race, they're the first and second lady, I think they can show up to races if they want. Just politicians need to know that if they show up to a race they have to accept the fact that they might be booed.

We need to keep politics out of nascar. It sucks, cause yes, freedom of speech and whatnot but we need to stop the divide. The ending of the 2002 Daytona 500 is the dumbest one for me when it comes to NASCAR because Sterling Marlin should have not been sent to the back of the grid, even though what he did was quite dumb. A time penalty would have been better suited for that situation. In Nascar you aren't allowed to add fuel/change tires/make adjustments/repair damage to the car while under a Red Flag, which Marlin did when stopped on the backstretch, pulling on the fender is repairing damage which is why he was sent to the rear of the field, it's been a rule for awhile even before this incident.

The 2018 Xfinity race at Daytona that Justin Haley clearly won, but was stripped of, and given to Kyle Larson. "Names are made here", yet NASCAR chose to split hairs over the yellow line rule, and award the win to a Cup driver racing for his Cup team owner. I haven't tuned in to a NASCAR race since.

I've said it before, I'll say it again: Within the next couple of years, I antipciate a major political drama will tear the sport apart. NASCAR as a whole, not just the organization but the component sport associated, will be essentially forced to pick a side, and the other side will probably start a rival org. It's not a fun prediction, but god, it's pretty realistic.

The Dumbest things I can think of that is a controversy is The use of PJ1with NASCAR inventing this stuff and later too much and could have been avoided at most of these tracks by doing a tar blacktop to the tracks or a repave of the top most layer or a regrind on some rather then the PJ1. 90% of these tracks had to get repaved anyhow due to what PJ1 does to the surface over a few years, makes it so the track in untraceable by almost any form of motorsports except those that have rain tires or do dirt in the series as well as paved and then have to use the other tires at specific tracks when it is not wet or dirt just for safety and to not have major injury or major wreaks. A regrind or a top layer pave is the best option even a blacktop tar would work, not a stupid overuse of PJ1 that has caused some tracks to be shut down for other racing like Texas or even Nashville Speedway though to be fair, Amazon is not letting trucks leave a track they do not own.

Carl Edwards quit NASCAR because he was leading the race by at least half a lap and a Phantom Caution came out and he ended up finishing 2nd. NASCAR manipulated the results of the race.

I think that DUI for Brian France HELPED NASCAR. The guy didn’t care, he just let the sport go down the drain and try to appease the crowd that doesn’t care for NASCAR. As for Politics… Ronald Reagan had the best approach. Just go as the President and have fun… and that was during an election year, and no other President had done so… I was at that Dover race that got rained out and I will say this… NASCAR fans for the most part don’t like the Democrats. A LOT of Let’s Go Brandon stuff. But you forgot to talk about the whole noose thing with Bubba Wallace. I saw that from a mile away! Most of us did.

Unfortunately, the reality is that for some politicians going to an event in and of itself has to be a big deal. Joe Biden going to anywhere less secure than the White House is going to draw massive police protection, and woe betide any fan who accidentally spills a beer on the presidential jeans. Don't know if a governor needs as much security, but there will be some just in case someone at the event decides to try to vote with their fist.

I wish politics weren't so big of an issue just from a person's face being there. Random senators or governors, sure, don't allow them, but we should at least be able to have the POTUS at one of very few sports that are only in America. Maybe don't even allow them to speak, just let them wave a flag or drive the pace car or whatever and that's it. Maybe even only at the 500. No matter what side you're on or where you are in between, you should be able to appreciate the face of America being present for "The Great American Race." To me, it's more symbolic than anything else. I understand at the end of the day it probably is just a PR stunt especially if it's in an election year, but come on. I'll respect any president that shows up for The Great *American* Race. It wouldn't sway my vote, but it'll at least let me know that hey, they like America and they want to be there to enjoy an American spectacle with other Americans.

The 2019 Daytona race that Haley won and the aftermath was all ridiculous. Kurt Busch was rightfully pissed, but Haley if I remember correctly got death threats for the whole thing and he did nothing wrong. For what, winning a rain shortened race? Yes. The dirt bristol race this year was also a shitshow because they got delayed twice for rain and never called it despite poor track conditions, screwing Daniel Suarez out of his first career win
