Ric - I was thinking the exact same thing. There are no bad copies - but these first dozen pressings are all crappy and on noisy vinyl. LOL. I guess maybe you can hear all of that when it’s being played on a $50,000+ system. I don’t begrudge him and I’m not jealous. Also, I’m guessing my ears aren’t that good either. So, give me one of the crappy copies that I can afford! My

Great video, incredibly informative. Please do these pressing comparisons, and don’t stop doing them. I’m falling more and more in love with vinyl by the day, but I was born way after it went out of style and getting solid information on the smaller issues of it, such as the difference between various pressings of LP’s, is rather hard to find. Thank god you made these videos, and thank god the two I’ve seen were focused on my favorite albums. To reiterate, thank you for your effort and never ever stop making these.

I’m new to vinyl collecting and listening and you just blew my mind with all this. I’m only into it because I love to hear my favorite music on its original format but duuuudddde, apparently there’s so much more to it than just going to a record store and buying some beat up records to listen to 😅

YEP. But that's what's great about this hobby. You have your elitist snobs, but most people are cool and love to talk music and vinyl. We educate eachother. Online vids can be great, so can a cool used records store. I judge a record store by the owners and employees friendliness and knowledge. If they are snobs that obviously are just in it for the money I shop elsewhere.

@@CalWaverly My last collection of close to 800 were primarily not minty premo records. Lots of used record stores, vinyl shows and Goodwill finds. Of course I had my standards, no scratches, no musty smells or tore up jackets, but I'm okay with some pop and hiss. It's nostalgic for me. Don't get me wrong I had some gems mixed in, but I'm working with a tight budget. That being said. I had more records than I ever played. Some got a few spins, many got none in the 8 years I aquired that collection. Now that I'm starting over from nothing I'm choosing quality over quantity. Sure lots of records look impressive, but what good are they if they don't get played? A waste of money, time and effort. Big lesson learned (the hard way). Now I'm going to focus on albums I LOVE. I don't need all the commons, or filler albums. I don't need the entire Jethro Tull catalog just because they were cheap, for example. Same with many other bands. In some cases a greatest hits or best of album will suffice. The newest Motley Crue hits album from Walmart is a great example. It actually has all their hits. And and far as Tull is concerned Past Masters will do the trick. I realize many hits packages lack some of these actual hits and are garbage, but in some cases they will work for the casual fan. Just do your homework. So, for now on I'm only buying what I know I'll play, and go for the best copy I can afford. In most cases $30 or less. I'd rather have 50 records I love in M to VG+ condition that will get played than a "collection" of used so so records that primarily just take up space and in the end is a waste because they don't get played. We can lose perspective and get caught up in the "collection" over our love of music. I hope my mistake can help others. I mean if you have money falling out of your ass go buy everything you see, but my guess is most won't get played. As I am now in my mid 50s I'm accepting that time is short and I'll never regularly play hundreds of albums. Nor do I have time. I can always listen online to certain songs/albums and I'm okay with that. In other cases I'll want vinyl because I LOVE that album, and I have time in my busy life to spin a few. Hope that makes sense. Has anyone else come to that conclusion? Peace.

Thank you so much! You know your shit! Covered all the bases and really helped me condense my list. What would you say about represses using the A3/B3 stampers? Ever heard these or similar pressings where the original metal was used? They would of course be not as nice and a little worn inherently but perhaps a better option? I own similar “French for UK” pressings of Abbey Road and the white album that use the original stampers and I think they sound pretty damn good. I can see maybe where perhaps the original run could be more full sounding but considering they use the original metal parts and they are much less I think opting for one of those and the Kevin Gray would have me all set for a while as I already have the “BG” as well.

I hated it at first because I had a cheap turntable with below average cartridge, but the recorded itself had a lot of surface noise. Spot on for this review. The 30th is my goto but I do like the MOFI's as I have both as well. But my BEST version is a European production safety master tape I scored this year. It just kills any vinyl out there. Don't play it too often for obvious reasons so a quick DSD 128 copy back to tape still sounds amazing.

The Sacd is a remaster and remix so sounds quite different. However vs the 1994 cd and 2011 cd, as long as the sacd layer is played in a dedicated sacd player it sounds very very good indeed for digital. The cd layer sounds off however so i would only buy the sacd to play the sacd layer and if possible in multichannel as thats why it was remixed to suit. This is from an owner of all 3 editions 😊

Brandon. Don't panic. Just buy what you can afford. When people say, " this is a bad copy " it will probably be just fine. I have a solid triangle first press and yes it sounds great, but the 2018 remaster sounds good too and is a fraction of the price. I also have a sealed 30th Anniversary copy. All of these copies I bought for peanuts. It's only recently prices have shot up. What you want to avoid is a copy that has been played to death and used to roll a fat one on as that will be full of what you don't want, scratches, dirt and little specs of ground in hash! My advice, wait to see what is released in March 2023 50th anniversary. We have no idea what is planned, if anything, but may be worth the wait!

I feel very lucky owning two clean copies of the first UK pressing, both A2 B2 one is a factory sample also. And I paid around 450 pounds in total for both. Yes I’m from the UK, here you can find first UK pressings for a lot less obviously. And the best advice I can give is: buy a good record cleaning machine: 8 times out of 10 your records will go up half a point in condition (say a clean VG+ could get to EX or M-) after properly washing them!

WOW! And I thought my Swedish pressing on a crisp white vinyl disc was pretty sweet until I watched this review video!! It has not been played more than a couple of dozen times since I bought it in the early 1990s, and I have been extremely careful not to damage the record, so the playback quality is still superb! I own 4 different DSOTM records as well as some CD variations, but the white LP is my favorite. I'd like to believe my ears are still as functional as ever, but I've been enjoying high volume rock music since the Beatles first hit the radio waves, so L'm sure I must have lost a small percentage of my hearing along the way.

I have bought at least 10 copies since day 1. The two best are the UHQR which I bought new for $40 and first pressing of the CD imported from Japan, but it has no OBI and was boxed in a domestic box.

I used to own a solid blue UK A2/B2...it didn’t have the skip in Money...it looked clean but unfortunately my copy was noisy as hell and had groove wear. It was such a letdown. I thought it was worse than my US Wly ... I didn’t pay a ton for it thankfully but boy, was I disappointed. I ended up selling it for more than I paid to someone who was happy just to have a “solid blue” I guess. Now my go-to copy is the 2016 reissue. You kind of glossed over it and while I haven’t heard the others you talk about (I remember passing up the 30th Anniversary when it came out because I was an idiot and only collected originals), but I do think the 2016 is a pretty gorgeous pressing! I know it’s a digital file, but I can’t find too much to fault. It’s a truly beautiful listen and will do just fine until the day I stumble across a bargain on one of the 30th or UK’s.

Just a note on the Quad SQ version of this record. I have I think a European pressing not sure which one. While I agree with Mike about the sonic quality, it's worth listening to one of these pressing because the music is different. An SQ Quad record can be played by a stereo cartridge, but of course you won't hear all 4 channels and it might not sound correct in stereo. Typically mixing engineers make EQ and loudness and other sonic decisions when they remix a record. But the SQ version has some musical takes that are different. The first and most obvious example is the end of the first Sax solo on Us and Them. If you listen to the SQ record, you'll hear an extra measure of music played by the Sax at the very end of the solo. In fact, there are several Sax playing differences which makes me wonder if they remixed it from the individual instrument parts and just used a reel of Sax playing that was different than the original. You'll also hear sounds going between the speakers that are different from the original. I'm sure that was done to enhance the quad surround experience. So try to listen to an SQ version not for audiophile reasons but for the novelty of hearing a record that we all know so well that will sound a bit different.

Never realized so many versions of this exist ! I have 3 LPs, an original `73 pressing, an MFSL, and the 30th anniversary, which I agree, is the best of what I have. Also have a nice R2R tape of DSOM, very well-crafted by a former studio engineer, using a low-gen safety copy mixed down from a Studer to an Otari deck, onto NOS Maxell tape. Good SQ, very crisp, very clean....

Very interesting to hear all the comments on the LP. Loved it. Always wondered if you had played them on a British system though, say a typical English made system with their signature cables and European sound, what would you have found? So many different nuances. Things out front, things behind.. Cables hiding or promoting said nuances also.. Same question for the Sgt. Pepper's film you made way back and or any others.

Interested to know if you've heard / have a copy of the Australian Quad release which has A2, B1. I've just received a copy of A2 B2 original UK press & the sound quality on that while definitely spectacular, despite some pretty noisy sections, was actually pretty close to this Australian Quad.. which looks like it's around the $20 mark on cogs... I'm not listening through a wall of McIntoch amps, & just starting to develop my ear for quality after watching your vids... SO maybe I'm missing what makes a record crappy.. but yeah.. hook up an Australian Quad & see how it stacks up.. :) Thanks for the cool video..

In 2002 or 2003 for the 30th anniv Gilmour states on the record that the 1973 mix used for A1/B1 ( scrapped) and A2/B2 is 3rd generation tape. Most of the drums, bass and rhythm guitars were bounced into a 2 track mix. He states they have goneback to the very original tapes and sychronised altogether is orignal takes and better sound quality and mixed to SACD quadrophonic format. So can you really detect the degredation of the tape after 30 years? I had a A2 B2 2 LP single sided Test Pressing which is dated 14/02/73 The only thing I recall which hurt my ear was the guitar solo during Time broke up at the high frequency, but that was cool. The Money defect was absent. In the 1980s Pink Floyd asked Harry T. Moss to mix the catalogue so you see HTM in the matrix

I have the 30th Anniversary and unfortunately, I have a very noisy pressing. I have read a lot of people had the same experience. Having said, when the record gets past the quiet moments the sound is outstanding. I wish I had a quiet copy, but I guess I can't complain that I paid $18 for my copy.
