Awesome that Biak was mentioned. Despite being so unknown, it really was the first time the US encountered the kind of cave style of warfare that would be expanded on Peleliu, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa.

Bloody Tarawa was so brutal largely because the Marine landing craft bottomed out several hundred yards from the beach, so the Marines had to wade without cover under machinegun fire before even starting to take the beach. They still took it though. This catastrophe is what led to the creation of Frogmen, the predecessors of SEALs, to scout beaches before assaults.
@tazzydevil6638 Жыл бұрын
Additionally, the absolutely, mind-boggling KIAs of the Japanese where only 17 of the more than 5000 men survived to be captured is harrowing. Absolutely brutal battle.
@gustavderkits84332 жыл бұрын
You should also note that the lessons from these battles of attrition led to the estimate of a million American casualties for an invasion of the home islands and the consequent use of the atom bombs.

@@TheIntelReport Better since Australians were the main ground force in Pacific from 1942-1944. MacArthur had 14 Divisions and 12 were Australian and NZ inbedded in them. and only 2 were American. Most of your facts about this video are wrong. Guadal Canal was not the first defeat of Japanese WW2. Was Australian along Kakoda track.
@hihfty2 жыл бұрын
@@nedkelly9688 Australia had an ever tightening noose wrapping around them. United States naval power and logistics is what Carried the war in the pacific. The Australian military was grossly under equipped and under prepared for the war. Without United States intervention in the area Australia was powerless to make any impacts. And truth be told it should be Australian troops compromising the majority of divisions as it is the Australians lack of preparedness that let the Japanese go scorched earth in your play box. In all happy to have the Australians on board but the reality is that our little brother was suffering an impending doom.

Fantastic start of this channel. I think this hits a niche that few others meet. Might I suggest that if we're looking at events from a theater level, it may be a good idea to include a constant theater map in a corner somewhere so that the actions and results can be understood in real time? When the theater map was re-presented after the footage cuts, it took me a few seconds each time to remember the state of the map the last time I had seen it.

Aside from the Iwo Jima and Okinawa campaigns, defense in depth in urban fighting especially in the Battle of Manila convinced the Americans that landing all those troops in the Japanese homeland would result in a bloodbath larger than planned. Thus, fasttracking the development of atomic weapons.
