one of my favorite details during that scene where himmel basically proposes is how the church bells are ringing like they are symbolizing wedding bells. i think that was an intentional detail

Others have mentioned this so I won't take credit for it as I missed it the first time I watched. The bracelet is a mirrored lotus in bloom, implying that Fern and Stark's love will come to fruition. The ring is a bud of a mirrored lotus, implying that the love has yet to bloom. Even more tragic to know it can't and the reason is their separation of time, which is why the clock tower was between in the background when Himmel put the ring on her.

The bell ringing is also a callback to ep 1. In that ep, at Himmel's funeral, the bell tolls and Frieren reacts. It's not even clear at the time that she knows why she is reacting as she is. Later that same ep, she is looking at the ring. In this ep, of course, the bells tolling and ring come together and make Frieren finally realize that Himmel loved her and was declaring his love for her - but she never (consciously) knew until that moment, 80 years later.

Another great reaction from you two. And yes, a family is forming. As for Fern, they never really state how Fern's parents died other than saying she was a "war orphan." They don't tell us is that war was between humans and demons or humans and humans. After all, we humans are the warring type. If monsters and demons didn't exist in the world of Freiren I am sure that war would still be there.

Fern's parent's died in a medieval war, so I'd say they didn't die peacefully in their sleep, Or even in a bombing raid or missile strike. Whatever happened, it was bad enough to make Fern want to kill herself.

@@kallemattiwaris2422 I think you missed the point I was making. I never claimed that Ferns parents died peacefully. After all, she is a "War Orphan" which, by definition, would mean that her parents died as the result of war. What I said/meant was that we don't know if it was humans warring with demons or if it was a warring between humans, example: kingdoms, nations etc. It's not as though war between nations hasn't/doesn't happen in this mangaka's (creators) world. A certain a mage even comments how he could order nations to go to war...that means there are Wars between humans..there are other small references and proof and hints that bad humans exist for example, bandits. Which is kind of a no brainer, we humans beings are ultimately/typically terrible, quick tempered, violent and petty creatures in any setting whether it's fantasy world or reality. Any story that tried to paint the illusion of humans not having such a nature would be too absurd, even for those with mountain sized imaginations. Wouldn't you agree?

26:20 one could say that Frieren has met Himmel again throughout this retreading of their past journey. irl, memory and still beint able to learn from a re-examination of the past is the closest thing we have to a reunion with those lost to us, in this world at least.

I think frieren knew the meaning of the flower, I just feel that she didn't feel it was important or that she didn't understand what himmel or that because she's an elf, her feelings needed more time to come around and she didn't think about it until it was too late. It's obvious himmel had a thing going on but frieren's clock just didn't line up with his.
