It’s much easier to ignore the rationality that tries to creep in, and bombard those thoughts with scripture and prayer. It’s seemingly the right thing to do. It can be vicious.

@pidayrocks2235 Жыл бұрын
I’ll revise this a bit because what it convinces people to do isn’t that important (we don’t hold an outside source responsible just because it “inspired” a bad action from a person, as long as that source didn’t directly state to do the bad thing). I’m the case of religions, though, they do directly espouse immoral nonsense/actions, so it’s no longer a matter of just interpretation or inspiration. But also, even if we invented a new religion right now that didn’t have immoral principles, even just telling people to believe something for which they don’t have evidentiary warrant IS HARMFUL, because A) of how it trains your brain, B) once you accept unwarranted beliefs, you serve as a cover for those who use that magic thinking to believe extremist stuff even if you yourself aren’t extremis by virtue of propping up a world in which we as a collective don’t need to critically examine our beliefs, C) all of our actions are informed by our beliefs and so holding unsubstantiated beliefs can affect even what some might consider mundane actions like how you vote, how you raise your children, how you influence others to think, etc. All of that to say - this means that any religion that involved magical thinking, even hypothetical ones that haven’t been invented yet, are harmful.

A lot of people say "What's the harm though? Let people believe what they want, believing in God helps them." The problem is that if you let yourself believe things without appropriate evidence (and most often without _any_ evidence), you are not only inviting delusions that _try_ to be beneficial, but suffering as well -- but since a religious mindset just believes and doesn't question/inquire, those drawbacks won't be addressed, or even acknowledged. At best, the suffering it invites can simply be _reframed_ with religious narratives to once more justify them. Imagine if your family members get cancer, you tell yourself "It's OK, it's just God's way of saying it's their time to go to Heaven. And the tumors, they are like God's blessings. They are there to _help_ my loved ones go. It is simply the body of this current life reacting to the blessings of God. Yes, now I feel better when I see these tumors! They're just God's sign." Yes now _you_ feel better. And the victims, if they claim to believe enough, claim to feel better too (except of course, those who don't But then you can just say "well that's your fault for not believing enough"). You just have to make sure _everyone_ is _exactly_ on the same page of this incredible level of self-convincing _against_ what every fact in the actual world is telling them. What are rational results of that sort of belief? Well, one might then be inclined to _let cancer run rampant_ on their loved ones -- all the suffering included with a slow death (because "God made your life, if you don't let it run its course naturally then it is an insult to God! You are suffering for a reason, it must be good, because God must know what he's doing.") instead of seeking treatment or even advocating for a cure. Because now, cancer is equated with "God's will." Hell, one can say "It is a test from God. If you love God enough, you will suffer through it and die slowly. Do not offend God!" Which of course leads to the question: Why is God so cruel and selfish then? But then again, plenty of religious narrative that tries (and actually fails) to justify it - but remember, you can't question. Just believe, and don't think about the fact that it just gets worse and worse. Chant and sing loud enough so you can't hear the world around you. Or, simply ask "Wait, what?" recognize that this whole God and religion thing involves narrative upon narrative upon narrative tacked up on each other to frantically and poorly patchwork plug the growing holes on your ship. Start with a new one, one that's properly built and designed to properly navigate the cold reality of the world instead of pretending.
@thomasstuart6861 Жыл бұрын
You suggest believing in God for a magical cure is not associated with reality and could prevent the drive required to actually find a cure. I doubt it. Firstly, I had Lymphoma last year and banged the gong signifying cured. The magic is in the people who care. While I don't believe in prayer, I do believe in the goodness of people who pray. The science and new age reasoning, thinking electrons, double slits, uncertainty and Schrodinger's cat, who can say what consciousness is capable of. However, I agree with you, what kind of people would heaven be filled with if they all, everyone of them fails at reasoning and runs away from the truth for fear of something, is it fear of not being loved of fear of hell, who knows? I should tell you that I know there is a God. What I know of the world, it sucks. Just days ago the Doc tells me he thinks I have colorectal cancer and my property taxes went up 50%. The only logic I can put together is that what we believe of religion is mostly wrong excepting for the basics, treat others the way you want to be treated. All of a sudden that's not enough and religious grifters come along to sort it out. That's the best I can figure because it just makes no sense. You ask why the world sucks when God claims he loves you. Well, maybe you don't give them an erection. I think the point is that time is forever, that life on earth is an experience and that there is an after, after and after life. Somebody in power will see that eventually you will be cared for and will not fail to ensure it. But the caveat is, life is very real and not just a good simulation. What happens in this life is carried over into another for the persons own benefit. If they get ahead of you, don't be jealous.

He's at the point when you reject a religion and you build your own. The best way to help in this situation is to show that you are using your subjective morality, removing the "god" element is the next step, when you realize it's not needed in the equation. Also, the caller is right when he says that people can use religion as a base to be good persons. They can use also Star Trek to do that, so all you need to explain is that it's your brain making you a better person, doesn't matter the sci-fi you think you are using.

I've been an atheist for over 30 years, and experience in my field. If we are committed to the truth in principle, our approach to deconversion would be oriented by proven methods to accomplish a goal. If our goal is to deconvert, and our obstacle is rooted in psychological loopholes triggered by poking the problem, we might want to approach it from a "therapy" angle. Therapy has proven to help people out of mental locks that limit their potential. What we see in that video is a caller on the fence about religion, employing these behaviors of denial when approaching a critical question. We know these are triggered by a sense of stress caused by the possibility of being wrong, about losing out, etc... at that point.. If our goal is to help them deconvert, then we want their brain to engage. We want them to be able to let their guard down. This is how I would rephrase my approach when those questions face those obstacles. "I know this is an uncomfortable question because it seems like I am asking you to say X cannot be good in a limited Y, but it's not, I am asking you to tell me if it's better to be good and truthful or good and untruthful? Imagine freedom from mental oppression and the social constraints imposed by the people who surround them. Imagine making it OK to admit wrong. "If god was so good, he would prefer you to be honest."

From my perspective as a psychoanalyst/philosopher, there is a very small sliver of religious activity that has useful psychological benefit. The majority of religionists/theists use religion to sublimate their own neurosis, personality disorders or other aspects of mental illness. It's better to be a neurotic, as one is in a much better position to get out of religion or reinvent the positive social aspects of it. For most, religion appeals to our infantile preverbal, early verbal and social object relations as a means to sublimate unhealed early psychological wounds, splits or fractures around early attachments like safety, security, comfort and certainty with their parental object relations . For others who experienced trauma early in life, religion serves as means of suppression and repression of a barred subject. The degree of all these unconscious artifacts corresponds to the degree of resistance that a religionist/theist presents. Religion also acts as a placeholder for self-identity. The individual usually has an incomplete, diffuse or fractured identity. In other words they can't tell you who they are without religion.

If some weird shit happened on call and each person is having an experience while on call would be good evidence. Like if both Matt and snow started freaking out like some old testament angel appears in their rooms... That would be good evidence. Alas nothing like that can or will happen.

From my understanding, roughly, the same amount of people do good and bad things regardless of whether or not they have a religion, and I might be off by some margin I don’t know, but being how religion cannot be proven true or false I don’t see any reason to follow religion and I do good because I know right from wrong and I don’t need a God or religion to tell me that And I don’t feel like it’s a necessity

At 5:15 the host makes a salient argument for wanting to know the truth. Bertrand Russell makes the same point too, saying that we no longer value truth and it's OK to have a muddled thinking process. Why would that be? Because our instincts dictate it's more important to be part of the tribe (even though they're wrong) than to be right but excluded from the tribe.

If there's any doubt; THIS is why Matt, Jimmy et all seem less patient. Dude didn't hear SHIT, not a goddamn thing at the end of this call. They addressed it several times and dude still roughly summed it up as "well, it could lead to some good so who cares if it's true". Yikes.

Just imagine a Christian parole panel how their eyes would light up when a prisoner tells them he/she has found Jesus? I’m an atheist but if I ever ended up in prison I would surely find Jesus in prison if it was going to help me get out early. Of course I would end up with a Muslim parole panel, but I'm sure they would be able to convert me in the short time we would have together.

I'm always hoping the hosts will ask 2 questions. Can bad people go to heaven and can good people go to hell? If their answer is yes then they have no good moral defense of their god. If their answer is no then they haven't read the bible, or they're being dishonest.

Whenever a caller says they used to be an atheist and are now a theist it's either a lie or they had just as bad reasoning for being atheist. If your reasoning is "I'd like it to be true" or "I don't think it's hurting anyone" that's just a tacit admission you don't care about truth or how to find it.

Something uniquely bad i think about Christianity in particular is the fact that as jesus saves us from sin as long as we repent and accept him as our saviour, we're forgiven. The problem i see here is that if you transgress someone, you seek forgiveness from god, not the person you've wronged. And god never talks to people so unlike people, he can't say no. So you can shed your guilt for wrongdoing because a crime against people can be forgiven by a god who will always forgive you

The problem is what happens AFTER you open your mind to the impossible and the ridiculous (religion). It then becomes that much easier to buy into future nonsense (conspiracy theories, etc.).

His own pals avoid questions all the time. That doesn't give people a right to race to anger. I'm currently in a conversation with Aron Ra on his channel. I've asked him the same two questions probably 10 times without him answering them directly. I didn't explode in fuming anger at him.

Yep, this one didn't deserve the "Matt treatment". As an ex-christian I understand where this guy is. I was there and also Matt was there. The first thing that happens when you reject religion is to make excuse for the "god" concept and build a framework where it can still exist. It's a process, and Matt didn't help it.

Atheists, imagine this: tomorrow Jesus appears from the sky in Jerusalem and says: "Real Christians can go to heaven right away, but false Christians and Atheists must pray really hard or they'll go to hell". What would happen and what would you do? He would never get that far. He’d be blown up in mid air by Israeli air defense missiles. Don’t forget, most Israelis come from white, northern European stock. They would see Jesus as Palestinian. And what would I do? Nothing. Because it wouldn’t make the news.

Prisoners “reform” in prison because, firstly it’s already almost entirely religious people in prison, and secondly they all, even the non-religious ones, know that parole boards look kindly on people who supposedly found god. Our prison system doesn’t reform people. It solely punishes, and generally makes them worse. Since the vast, vast majority of people in prison are not in for life and will out walking around… maybe we ought to do something about that. (

Starts off by saying they want to encourage people and be open and welcoming to those caught up in religion. Ends by calling the caller a "bitch" because he can't find a way to agree with them. Sounded a lot like the caller was looking for a way out of his ideas on religion. And like a lot of religious folks who are actually indoctrinated into a cult, the caller needed support and not Matt's typical anger and derision. I wonder if Jimmy Snow cussed people out before he started working with Matt. Or if Jimmy cusses and derides people when he "collabs", (is it really too much to say the entire word?), with other podcasters. These two are so angry, they often just come at this from pain and trauma and in the end cause even more trauma, sometimes, than good.
