For some reason, it's the Lord of the Rings reference that hits me about this. "In the darkest depths of Mordor, I met a girl so fair...", I mean yes, a great song and one I remember for a lot more than that, but their making what was, at the time, a quite obscure literary reference indicates a greater breadth of education than rock musicians are often thought to have.

According to urban legend, during a gig in Stockholm, Sweden, on September 12th 1968, (when the group were still touting their wares under the name 'The New Yardbirds') the amplifiers shut down - and, according to Jimmy Page, his singer was still audible over the rest of the group from the back of the auditorium. This song dates from the following year and shows Plant in his full hippy mode, but it's a beautiful number.

That sound that trickles from one side to the other? Thank Jimmy Page for that. He produced all their records as well as wrote or co-wrote the songs and be the legendary, iconic guitar player. He produced the tracks and has all the masters in his personal collection. So when you hear it going back and forth in your headphones, that's Jimmy playing with all the knobs and dials on the big studio mixing desk. He knew people'd be listening to this stuff on headphones. And he was an absolute stickler for sound quality. That's why their recordings are so well mixed and balanced. He had a great ear and knew that the best way for Zeppelin's music to shine is to make sure everyone heard EVERYTHING all 4 of them were doing on the recording.
