THIS SONG - THIS VERSION tears my heart out every time I hear it - I was in love with a narcissist and only people who have ever been will know the bitter pain that this song stirs in me... She left me bankrupt, homeless; with brain damage from one of her attempts to kill me... Yet - it was worth it... And this was our song... Ive sailed the stratosphere to this song and plunged the Marianas trench of despair to it as well.

it is partially about the story of King David and when he fell in love with Bathsheba, which caused him to fall out of grace with God. Then Cohen intermingles a part of his own broken relationship in with it. in my opinion Cohen was meant to write it and Jeff was meant to sing it.

It’s also describe Samson who’s folly was women, and when he told her the secret to his strength she cut his hair in his sleep, and the Philistine men came in and captured him. His eyes were the gouged out and he was chained between two pillars to be mocked. I’m his final moments he asked God to renew his strength one last time, and he pulled the two pillars down causing the building to collapse, killing himself as well as his enemies. The kitchen chair line is in reference to the initial lie he told the woman he was with. He told her his weakness was brand new ropes, and she tied him to a kitchen chair in his sleep only for him to break out. Then after several go arounds he revealed to her his hair was the source of his strength and once she knew the truth she betrayed him.

Jeff was one of a kind. His music feels like it has a lot of melancholy and pathos but he clearly understood that some music is a way of allowing the listener a glimpse of the transcendent, so you come away from listening to his music somehow feeling melancholic, reflective and joyous. Check out his version of Corpus Christi Carol which is a piece written over 500 years ago and is always overlooked and is another interpretive tour de force.

Was written from the perspective of someone who had lived a lot of life. He knew the pains that can break us and when we still survive, that is the thing that pulls the "hallelujah" from us. It isn't the victory, it is the survival. Most people find out about it through the trials of life.

Leonard Cohen took over ten years to perfect this song; at one point having 50 stanzas. He used a lot of images from his Jewish faith (King Davidś fall) and struggled with depression. Those who covered the song took what worked for them. Elvis Costello did a cover, you can year it w piano by a ... Mr Cale then Jeff picked it up and make it a hit...it became more popular after he died. A tear-jerker and makes your heart ache. God draws straight with many crooked and imperfect lines.

Jeff Buckley imbued this song with emotion and pathos; and made it his own. You could do worse than check out his father, Tim Buckley, who also died way before his time. To start with, try Morning Glory.

I recommend Cary Brothers singing Glass Parade, gets me in the feels every time he gets to the chorus.

This song makes me feel a million miles away from everyone else, but closer than ever before to myself. Is that selfish?

Jeff Buckley was a very handsome beautiful man. xoxo He died by accidental drowning in TN before a show. He was incredible.

Gone too soon. Probably the most talented singer of the 90’s and that’s saying a lot. I named my daughter after his album. Grace is a timeless masterpiece.

It’s a good cover of a Leonard Cohen song. I think you should listen to Cohen’s Live in London version. It is sublime.
