This was beautiful then and it's really the heart of my generation! We ALL must Be colorblind and just LOVE ONE ANOTHER! I grew up in the 70's & 80's - That was exactly how it was & still should be! THANK YOU for this song and your appreciation shows in your reaction! We each change the world one step at a time! Be our BEST selves and we'll help change the world!

As I recall only Prince and Madonna were unable to make it to this event - all the giants of the 80s were there, and checked their egos at the door ( man i wish we could have seen MJ and Prince together here) but still this event symbolized the optimism of the 1980s. The song itself raised a huge amount of money for the relief efforts which saved many lives in Ethiopia during the famine. One of the survivors is now 50 and made this remark after Micheal Jackson passed: I won't ever forget Michael Jackson because his contribution to the song We are the World had a very significant effect on my life. I am 50 now but 25 years ago I was living in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, which at that time was suffering from a long drought and famine. It was a terrible situation. Lots of people became sick and many more died. Around one million people in all were killed by the famine. In 1984 Michael Jackson, along with a number of other leading musicians, made the song We are the World to raise money for Africa. We received a lot of aid from the world and I was one of those who directly benefitted from it. The wheat flour that was distributed to the famine victims was different to the usual cereal we bought at the market. We baked a special bread from it. The local people named the bread after the great artist and it became known as Michael Bread. It was soft and delicious. When you have been through such hard times you never forget events like this. If you speak to anyone who was in Addis Ababa at that time they will all know what Michael Bread is and I know I will remember it for the rest of my life

I could not agree with you more. Good music will stir emotions, and not always tears. Today- March 4, 2023 as I write this. I believe it's the 30 year anniversary of Jimmy Valvano's epic speech at the ESPYs....everybody should watch....extremely inspiring. But in it he says that we should all spend time in thought everyday, laugh everyday and have our emotions move us to tears everyday. Thanks for being vulnerable and real with us during this reaction! ❤

“We Are the World" opens with Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Kenny Rogers, James Ingram, Tina Turner, and Billy Joel singing the first verse. Michael Jackson and Diana Ross follow, completing the first chorus together. Dionne Warwick, Willie Nelson, and Al Jarreau sing the second verse, before Bruce Springsteen, Kenny Loggins, Steve Perry, and Daryl Hall go through the second chorus. Co-writer Jackson, Huey Lewis, Cyndi Lauper, and Kim Carnes follow with the song's bridge. This structuring of the song is said to "create a sense of continuous surprise and emotional buildup". "We Are the World" concludes with Bob Dylan and Ray Charles singing a full chorus, Wonder and Springsteen duetting, and ad libs from Charles and Ingram.

Bruce Springsteen had one of the biggest records in the country during this. From what I’ve heard, he drove his own truck there while most of the others were dropped off in limos. When he got there, some of the rock guys were going to leave as they thought the song was too pop and might hurt their image. Bruce said I’m here to feed people. Freaking amazing

Thank you for using “iconic” correctly regarding this video. These are actual icons all in this video and this song really is iconic because that hook is (or should be) known around the world. This song came out in 1985, and I’m 17 and I’ve heard the song a few times in my life, it is iconic, but just recently I’ve seen the music video, all in one take, the talent in that room to bring unity to everyone is something that I believe can never be matched, nowadays people really are separated, and a lot of modern singers don’t have nearly the natural vocals like literally anyone who participated in the original recording, wish we had more of this in our world

Part of the reason Prince didn't do it. He wanted to rewrite the song, and when they told him no, he said he would just lay a gutiar track for it. And Quincy told him if he can be part of the group then he shouldn't show. So he didn't.

He was critical in getting most them to come over on Jan 28th, 1985 at 10pm since most of these artist had just attended the America Music Awards Ceremony right down the street.

If this song fails to make you emotional, your humanity may be in question. Back then, external forces were preaching unity, but today it seems the opposite. We have the control to fight FOR each other, instead of WITH each other. I know I ain't giving up, and this song serves as continued inspiration.

There were 46 recording artists/singers who came together to make this song. That doesn't include the famous members of different bands who came to help with their instruments: guitars, drums, piano, etc. FORTY SIX singers. Who were already famous, had their own careers and their own number one hits!!! AND - NONE of them got paid. They ALL did this FOR FREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They all came together from the goodness of their heart to do this, humble, and simply to do something great to help those in need!!!! EVERYONE came with no attitude, no stipulations, no demands - just their kind hearts and talent. ALL of the money that was made on this single went to help the needy in Africa - minus 10% that went to the homeless in America. This will NEVER happen again. Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie wrote this song the night before it was recorded. Everyone flew into LA the same day and Kenny Rogers lent his own recording studio to do this and it was recorded in ONE NIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! TRULY EPIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't be sorry, boo...I am 60 years old today. I was there when this debuted on MTV, and it made me emotional back then, and watching it STILL makes me emotional today, NO MATTER how many times I see it. You also MUST see the documentary about the making of this song. You also have to see the song that came first: "Do They Know It's Christmas." It was a bunch of British pop and rock stars you may not know, but a year before "We Are The World", they came together to do a charity video for a time when famine had hit parts of Africa HARD. When Lionel Ritchie saw this, he knew that American stars needed to do something like that, so he, MJ and Quincy Jones teamed up, and the result was this video.

This was such an honest and genuine reaction - the complete opposite of the sort of fake stuff often found on KZbin. Yours was a very natural reaction to what was a one-off moment in pop music history - it really was a song of unity and it raised millions of dollars for famine relief in Ethiopia in 1985. The idea was Harry Belaftone’s and then Michael Jackson wrote the chorus, Lionel Richie wrote the verse... and the rest was history. As you said, it was a beautiful moment. Happy new year.

Sweetie, don't apologize for crying or getting emotional. You should! I absolutely love what you said about how nice it is to see people united. You are SO right! This project showed the best of humanity and compassion and it's something we see very little of in today's world. The U.S.A. for Africa project brought together an astounding number of artists for the common goal of bringing some relief to millions of people who were affected by famine. Race did not matter. Class did not matter. Status did not matter. It was about feeding millions of people who were starving. Period.
