The John Adams Institute

Күн бұрын

On September 26, 2001, David Sedaris came to the John Adams Institute to discuss his work Naked and Me Talk Pretty One Day. In America, Sedaris is seen as the modern master of the short story. This genre was shocked into new popularity with his collections Barrel Fever, Holiday on Ice, Naked and Me Talk Pretty One Day. Sedaris is a also popular commentator for National Public Radio and his essays have been frequently featured in the New Yorker and Esquire. Previously living in Paris, Me Talk Pretty One Day was inspired by his move to France and his attempts to learn French. Another important inspiration for Sedaris is his family. We meet them in his work: the scientific enigma of his father, who produced six children who share none of his interests; his hardcore rap-loving brother who cannot speak without swearing; and his sister Amy, who delights in calling her father and impersonating women seeking an affair with him.

David Sedaris has gotten me through some rough times. My entire undergrad was Sedaris and REM. I am pleased to say that thirty-some years later, they still hold up.

How is this possible the person who wrote this masterpiece also is the best reader of it? I juat found David Sedaris at 65. It gives me Incredible hope to live longer, to have found this treasure at my age......life is fantastic!

I skipped it on your warning, then heard her interview David at the end, and she didn’t seem to listen, she clearly had a list of questions/points to make as if this was about her. Amazing how many “journalists” or critics are like that today. Everybody thinks their thoughts are as important as a great writer. Wasn’t like that 30 years ago. Write your own bestsellers, lady.

'Shamelessness' is now a national obsession in the USA. It wears much better on a comedian than with a politician.

It's horrifying that we have such cruel and often very stupid people who have elected people to Congress who truly do represent their most abhorrent beliefs and behaviors. 25 years ago, one had to listen to far-right radio to hear someone vilify POC and LGBTQ and call for their exclusion in America. Now this venom has infected an entire party.

The speaker doing the introduction did a thotful, analytical talk. It was longer than we do it in the US. I enjoyed it because it was different and detailed. It's only about 13 minutes. David was in a foreign country, not the US. Not everyone there knew Sedaris as well as an American audience. That's how they do it. Get over not liking it. You are not in Kansas anymore.

These recordings from the John Adams Institute really suffer from the inclusion of the pointless, self-indulgent ramblings by the incredibly uninteresting people introducing David Sedaris. Ugh.
