1:55 - Because inflation means that the same dollar amount is worth less, and because as games became bigger, with larger worlds, more complex systems and interactions, and more high-res graphics that aim at achieving perfect realism, the costs of producing games went up. 30 years ago a few friends could make AAA games in their garage on a shoestring budget. Now you need a studio with dozens of developers to achieve the present-day AAA. Meanwhile we still have hit indie games being made by 1 or two guys, and AA games being made by small teams. Those typically peak at $30 for the big releases, or about $10-$20 for smaller games. Some really small games can even go for about $5 despite offering better quality than AAA of 30 years ago. The main cost of physical copies is the cost of developing the game. A disk, even 20 years ago, was only a few cents. A jewel case is probably also only a few cents. The jacket also probably also a few cents. You could ship a box with hundreds of these for a few dollars, so again only a few cents each. The rest of the money is for recovering the sunken costs of development, and then once that's taken care of, for profits which then become part of the sunken costs of the next project, which will have to be even bigger to keep up with the state of the art and stay competitive in the AAA race to photorealism and game worlds bigger than the universe.

I agree with your video. I forget what youtuber said it but they said that all ps5 games were going to have a limited physical releases for all games because they want us to buy digital (otherwise known as You'll own nothing and be happy) which is crap and has been causing the prices of ps5 games and some ps4 games that have free ps5 upgrades to gain insane value over the past year because people want physical not digital. now the only reason why xbox one/series x games aren't worth anything is because the majority of them are available on gamepass and also none of the games are actually playable without internet connection because the xbox console needs to download the game from the internet even though you own the disc to the game. at least with playstation you can put the game disc in and play without an internet connection or even a psn account for the vast majority of playstation games. the only modern games that should be rare/expensive are collectors editions like the call of duty black ops 3 juggernog set that included the awesome mini fridge, or things like the 20th anniversary ps4 console that was limited to 1400 units same as the new ps5 pro 30th console. but the controllers and accesories that aren't limited to a set amount shouldn't be rare or hard to get. only time one should buy a digital game is if its way to expensive to get physically and the digital copy is either cheaper or on sale for a really good price. otherwise just wait patiently.
@Phil1Up_Collects24 күн бұрын
Yeah it's truly a shame what's happening, we're getting less and less and they're wanting us to be happy with it. But I'm not because when they say they're giving us options with the disk drives and console refreshes digital storefronts and subscription services they're not giving us options they're disguising the fact they're slowly taking it away from us by using other means that seem more convenient or easier/cheaper until they pull the rug out from under us in the subscription services are the only option They triple in price and you no longer have a video game console that can actually play physical media. If that ever completely happens we are at the Soul Mercy of Sony Microsoft into a lesser extent Nintendo. And I'm just not comfortable with that. Sony wants people to not buy physical games by removing the disk drive selling it as an attachment that's hard to get with its limited stock and making less games That's what Microsoft did and they destroyed people's desire to buy physical games The online check-ins you can't actually play it from the disc without an internet connection even though you have the disc and the higher required print sizes to where some developers and publishers don't want to pay to have physical copies manufactured. And the facts that game pass has made Xbox fans so complacent and lazy to want to buy a game in a store The storefronts don't want to carry Xbox. I think in a few years Microsoft won't put out a console anymore they'll just put out controllers and try to have an Xbox application on every other device where you could just pay for Game pass. Microsoft was never in this industry for the love video games. They only gotten the industry to disrupt Sony from entering the PC space and now because they started the whole console warn nonsense Sony has been corrupted and tainted by Microsoft's business decisions. Because Sony investors saw the money Microsoft was making for online subscriptions paid online to play games and all the PC like shenanigans they put in their consoles. The Sony we used to love and know is practically gone. The only game console and company we have left is Nintendo. But that all rides on what they do with their next generation and how they handle physical games. Thanks so much for watching.

Some people just love a hard copy. And with how companies are so quick to tell everybody you don't own anything anymore and you have to constantly pay for subscription services and extra fees to get to enjoy any form of entertainment. I can't say for sure that all companies rely on artificial scarcity. With so many people buying digital it's easy to to understand why a company would prefer to print a limited amount of physical copies as opposed to having to discount or liquidate inventory. Storage is also costly, so the entire process is more expensive than most people think. It's the same reason companies like Sega and Konami are outsourcing production to companies like limited run, it removes part of the risk. With that said, it's still difficult to understand why they wouldn't make more copies when the demand is clearly there. And by the way, 3D all stars was only available and in production from sep to march, and production was high because people knew it was limited to a certain period. The price has increased, but Nintendo's sold over 5 million units
@Phil1Up_Collects16 күн бұрын
@@andreysegura2510 Yeah there's definitely a lot to factor in with that but there's nothing stopping these companies from reprinting them when they see that the demand is there I'm sure they know that some of these games go for crazy ridiculous prices on eBay They have the means to go search these games up just like you and I do So why do they sit there and ignore that? Why do they want to let the scalpers get rich off of the games they worked hard for? A simple reprint will knock down the aftermarket value of these games and make them money because people will want to buy it for retail cost overpaying a scalper double triple or quadruple the value. It really boggles the mind how out of touch they are with things like this. In certain situations I can understand but when it's a popular title like Final Fantasy Alan Wake or from a big AAA publisher it makes no sense. And when it comes to big AAA publishers it makes even less sense they would go through LRG to put out a standard or a collector's edition. Like for example Konami with Castlevania games, or how about the Dead Space collector's edition? Those are big companies and big IPs that people love all around the world You can't tell me that they wouldn't sell as a standard retail release. And you can't convince me that a dead space collector's edition wouldn't sell at retail when the original free games each had collector's editions that sold. It's craziness pure craziness.
@andreysegura251014 күн бұрын
@Phil1Up_Collects I definitely agree. Again, outsourcing to LRG makes sense, but just like Nintendo with the 'classic' consoles, they can certainly make more and meet the demand that is clearly there. Maybe in short print runs, a few thousands, measure the market and demand and make more if needed.

A simple solution is to just pre order your games before they come out at your mom & pop stores, gamestop, or online store. That way you get your game and dont have to worry about the secondary market value. As far as videogame values on the secondary market and reprints it is what it is. Comic books secondary market is similar. Sentiment and value goes hand in hand with supply and demand. You also got the speculation collectors who collect, buy, and sell based a games value and potential value due to rarity or pop culture significance.

@@Damackism I get what you're saying but you have to keep in mind that 60 to $70 for a game when there's so many games coming out all the time is hard for a lot of people to do. Especially if they live on a fixed income. Some people have to wait for some kind of sale. And then other times there's so many games coming out hundreds a week with physical releases collectors editions some people miss and announcement of a physical release and only find out about the game way after it's been out. Then when they go to look for a physical copy it's out of print and going for stupid prices. But like I said in the video any modern game that can be reprinted should not be going for expensive prices. Because as long as the factories are still throwing out switch, PS4, PS5, and Xbox discs. They only ones keeping us from having a physical is the developers publishers and license holders that don't want to reprint it.

@Phil1Up_Collects I feel you. All I can say it is what it is. Companies are trying to save money as well. Print runs of games these days are determined by popularity of game and demand i.e. pre orders. I work at Gamestop. We wont get many copies of games genres that are known to have medium to small print runs. Unless it gets pre ordered. Retail stores don't make a lit of profit selling new games. So thats why a there are only a limited amount of physical copies of the game. %60 of gamers buy games digitally. So most modrtn games are not going tp have a high physcal print run.

Yes this stuff sucks. Another thing that irritates me is how ports of older titles have remastered in the title. I get that it's been remastered but it's just ugly on cover art. An example is the thing game that came out in 2002 which just got a remaster. Like yeah we know a game that hasn't been on any platform since the original port would have some kind of improvements that doesn't mean it has to be in the name. Maybe I have ocd or something. I just really hate seeing "remaster" on my physical and digital games.
@Phil1Up_Collects28 күн бұрын
I guess that's done to entice new gamers or maybe there's some kind of legal reason where they have to put something in the title to separate it from the original release idk. My big issue isn't necessarily the flavor words. It's the fact that these remasters are inferior. Tomba has game breaking bugs and the physical release has them baked into the build after LRG specifically said that that issue wasn't in the physical and it would be patched out. Lollipop chainsaw also has a lot of issues that didn't plague the original release. And don't even get me started on the Dead Rising remaster. They straight up butchered and sensored that game. I also don't understand games that clearly don't need remasters like the last of us and Dead Rising getting them when they already had PS4 remasters. If you're going to bring back games either bring back games that really need it not ones that already have a physical on modern consoles and two if you bring them back make sure they're not censored and lastly three do not butcher the releases by introducing a bunch of new issues and problems that were never in the original releases. Because all that does is drive up value and interest in the original copies Wendy's so-called remasters and remakes fail to hit the mark. Now that there's a remaster of the thing I'm sure the original released copies are going to start going up in price if they haven't already.
@ドリフト180XАй бұрын
It’s strange some publishers would be against places like VGP printing more copies, since the publisher clearly wasn’t interested in producing any more and therefore making any more money on that title. It’s not like they make any money from resellers marking prices up, that’s all going to the seller. As for why not that many physical copies are made these days, it’s because of the digital to physical sales number split. Most people are fine with digital now sadly. So the publisher doesn’t make very many as they don’t want to over produce and lose money on that. Last I saw the digital to physical ratio was around: 80/20 on Xbox 70/30 on PlayStation 60/40 on Switch So the customers have spoken with their dollars and they have chosen digital unfortunately. If there is a game you really want to get physical, get it at MSRP while you can. Especially for publishers known for not printing very many copies like KoeiTecmo with games made by Gust. Or NISA and games made by Falcom.
@Phil1Up_CollectsАй бұрын
@@ドリフト180X yep the only way we can fix the demand for physical is also to lower the purchases of digital. Digital is convenience but look at what you're really giving up when you purchase it? PC used to have physical games. It was a bit cumbersome with all the floppy disks and multiple discs and installs. But everybody just started to purchase the digital games to the point that nobody thought it was important to provide district drives and PCs anymore and wanted to make the games physical. Now we are seeing both Sony and Microsoft pull out of the physical games. We'll have to wait and see what Nintendo does with their next system. I definitely don't want physical media to go away. But it's going to take all of us to change things. If we don't vote with our wallet then we can't cry about it later when physical media completely goes away. Thanks so much for watching.

The argument about "artificial rarity" overlooks several critical factors in the video game industry. To expect developers and publishers to manufacture copies of games perpetually to prevent high resale prices is not just impractical; it misunderstands the logistics and economics of production. Estimating Demand is Not Simple: Predicting how many copies of a game will sell is not an exact science. Publishers must balance the costs of production, storage, and distribution with the game's anticipated demand. Overprinting can lead to unsold stock that takes up warehouse space and incurs ongoing costs. These unused copies can become financial burdens, especially if the game underperforms. Where Would Unwanted Copies Go? The suggestion to overprint games assumes there’s infinite storage for unsold products. When a game’s lifecycle ends, the remaining stock must go somewhere. Without demand, those copies would sit in warehouses or be destroyed, both of which cost money and resources. The Economics of Reprinting: Printing another run of a game isn’t as simple as hitting a button. Publishers need to evaluate if demand justifies the costs of production, licensing, and logistics. If the market for a game is limited to niche collectors or secondhand buyers, the financial viability of reprinting may not make sense. Resale Prices Reflect Scarcity, Not Publisher Malice: The high prices in secondhand markets reflect supply and demand dynamics. If a game becomes rare and sought after, its price rises-not because publishers deliberately withheld copies, but because production naturally ends at some point. It’s not realistic to expect perpetual availability of every game ever made. In summary, demanding that games be overproduced indefinitely to prevent secondhand price inflation is shortsighted. It's an unreasonable expectation for companies to cater to niche secondhand buyers at the expense of financial and logistical viability. This take is dismissive of the complexities involved in manufacturing, estimating demand, and determining the cost-effectiveness of reprints.
@Phil1Up_CollectsАй бұрын
@@startedpvmer4117 That's a lot of fancy words and I'm pretty sure you had some solid points there. I wasn't implying that they need to reprint games indefinitely to where it becomes a financial burden. My point was they have the ability to reprint these games and there's nothing stopping them from doing so. But they should only do it if there is demand. It makes no sense to reprint things when there is next to no demand. That would be silly and to suggest that's what I implied is even sillier. But if you want to worry about the financial burden and cost of reprinting games. How about we talk about all the times these big AAA companies in the game industry waste tons of money not to mention taxpayer dollars on stupid things nobody asked for like Concord. A 200 to 400 million dollar flop. On top of the overspending of marketing and live action cutscenes for games that are unnecessary. The foolish waste of spending for game awards and big events that don't matter when they could just do something cheaper like a live stream. So I don't really want to hear that reprinting games is a financial burden and is going to put a company in the hole. When these companies waste money flavorlessly all of the time. By doing things that gamers that should be their target audience don't want in favor of other audiences or investors who don't even play games or care about games or are completely out of touch with games.
@startedpvmer4117Ай бұрын
@@Phil1Up_Collects Your argument oversimplifies the complexity of game reprints and company spending. While reprinting games may seem straightforward, the reality involves substantial financial and logistical considerations, including licensing, production, distribution, and marketing costs, even if the demand is moderate. It's not merely a matter of pressing "reprint" when gamers request it-each decision must factor in long-term profitability and the broader strategy of the company. Moreover, your critique of "wasteful spending" overlooks the importance of large-scale marketing and events in maintaining a company's competitive edge in an oversaturated market. For instance, extravagant campaigns and high-profile projects like "Concord" may fail sometimes, but they also represent efforts to innovate and capture market attention, which is vital for sustained success. These ventures are less about immediate ROI and more about building a brand and staying relevant. While catering to gamers is important, AAA companies must also consider their obligations to investors and the need to attract new audiences. These groups contribute significantly to a company's growth, and decisions are often made with long-term strategic goals in mind, rather than purely gamer satisfaction. Therefore, suggesting that reprinting games should always take priority over other investments oversimplifies the multi-faceted nature of decision-making in the gaming industry.

It's because video game companies want to squeeze as much profit out of games now days. If Square Enix makes five million copies of Final Fantasy 7 Remake and only two million physical copies sell, merchants will eventually either return overstock and get a refund on the unsold product instead of sitting on them or Square Enix will have to drop the price of these games at MSRP and issue a reimbursement cost for unsold copies. This means that the profit margin will be lower as gamers are able to then buy the game at a lower cost. This also will effect digital costs as if you've got millions of copies for $20 available physically, who in their right mind would buy a $70 copy of the game digitally? Because of this, publishers are trying to produce as many physical copies as they think will sell and depending on how quickly they sell they'll print more, but at some point once the sales slow, they'll stop printing them so they can gain as much money as possible. During previous generations when physical gaming was still big they just printed a lot more and we were able to get video games cheap, but physical gaming is more expensive than it's ever been for those patient enough to just wait. Everyone feels like they're following Nintendo and almost never dropping their prices and would rather have their games go out of print and not allowing anyone to purchase them at all rather than losing a single cent. I feel like the main cause of this is all these limited companies. Publishers are looking at LRGs limited print games and seeing that people wait for their preorders after paying 32 years earlier and publishers are just keeping their prices high with a low supply, limiting the amount they release just like these limited print companies.

I understand what point you're trying to make. But I'll have to counter that point by Why is this one particular Final Fantasy game The only one that is the exception to the rule? How many copies of Final Fantasy 15 16 and pass Final Fantasy games have they reprinted? It just makes no sense. It's like they'll do it for some games but not for the remake of one of the most popular Final Fantasy games of all time? You're going to tell me that 15 a mediocre in lame excuse as a Final Fantasy game and 16 a brand new entry that does not have the cultural phenomenon or impact that seven does one of the most marketed Final Fantasy games of all time where they constantly throw the characters on everything Final Fantasy related whenever it pops up. Is not worthy of getting a reprint? I'm sorry but I cannot get behind that logic It makes zero sense. If they reprinted it right now everybody would rush out and buy it it would sell millions. Instead you have people paying $100 for used copies and then having to go buy the DLC or $150 to $200 for a scalped copy of a game that was a PS5 version of a PS4 game that came out a couple of years ago. That's just insane to me. My theory is squaring it says no clue what they're doing because they listen to investors instead of listening to their fanbase. Ot truly is artificial rarity. But we do know why. Because they want to be all digital. The wanna keep full control and ownership of "your" game. There really should add amendments to the piracy, copyright and patents laws. Ehen it comes to frequencies there are regulations that prevent companies to hold them and not use the for a certain number of years. They are forced to sell or use them. Piracy is punished, even when there is no alternative. If a company wish to stand in and reprint a product no longer in production for years. They should be allowed to pay a fair licensing fee. Better yet. Remember "greatest hits" companies should, after a game been out for 2-5 years. Re-release the game with patches and updates included. Like FF15 Royal Edition. There is zero excuse for them to not reprint. They arent making more by low production. The scalpers are the ones benefiting.

The all, they all did, but now they won't. It's not money they want. It's power. They wanna be in control of what you play and when. They already have some games Re-release on subscription services. @Omizuke yep that's exactly correct I've said this before and everybody who pays for subscription services like Game pass Nintendo online PSN they're helping slowly kill game preservation and physical games You used to be able to buy classic Nintendo IPs digitally now you can't even do it unless you pay for a Nintendo online and you can argue Well it's only 20 a month unless you want the N64 games GBA then you're going to have to pay more. Game pass prices went up so it's no longer as good of a deal same with PSN. This is no different than Netflix Amazon Prime etc they all started out as a "good deal" and a "convince" overgoing to a movie theater or buying physical movies and now look what happened. Movie theaters have slowly been dying a lot of them have gone out of business. And stores like Best Buy no longer carry physical movies. Walmart bins are filled with discounted films that nobody will buy. It's only a matter of time till they start getting rid of physical DVDs and blu-rays and Amazon drops movies all together. You're even seeing higher prices charged for physical movies wasn't the still book edition of Wolverine and Blu-ray like $50 or $60 and the standard is $30? Their purposely making physical movies more expensive so they could eventually get people to stop buying the movies and just pay for a subscription service. They're strong arming you in order to give up physical films and embrace subscription services owning nothing. And video games are going the same route. With Sony offering disk drive attachments as a "option" over just building in the disk drive in the console like they did in the beginning and let people have the real option of either using it or buying the game digital. Microsoft releasing a slew of Xbox Series systems that have no disk drive whatsoever they're on the fast track of putting a nail in the coffin. We'll have to see what Nintendo does with their next generation hardware. But I hope they decide to continue physical games. They're already slowly being corrupted by a charging for online and locking those classic IPs behind a subscription service. But they haven't yet given up their IPs to PC or released to digital only systems yet so I guess that's the silver lining. The way it's going the evercade will really be the only physical game console we got left If Nintendo Sony and Microsoft don't course correct. Thanks so much for watching.

Devs need money and fans to make games. I will say that Companies like LRG are price gouging people, because publishers wont do reprints. And we're producing the physical for it at Premium so that's pretty awesome. But yeah it's unfortunate that some companies are putting artificial limits on certain games. Especially if there's a lot of demand and they could do more reprints of it. When it comes to LRG then releasing physicals for things that should have retail releases like Persona 3 and Persona 4 is weird to me. VGP sells out of copies of that whenever they get it in. But had that been a retail release that Sega/Atlus put out there wouldn't be a supply issue. In fact if I was Sega/Atlus I would reprint my own batches of that right now. I know Koei Tecmo and NIS did a widespread retail restock on various titles when they saw how well the VGP reprints sold. So it's definitely possible that these companies can do that If they would choose to.

@@thatssomegoodpie Tell that to all the people who constantly shove out So much money for physical copies. Even now with all the Black Friday sales out of stock here out of stock there. A lot of times the physical copies are heavily discounted more than a digital code could ever be. At least when it comes to consoles because they have locked digital storefronts. Now on PC with multiple options to get those digital games at various different prices. You get a pretty good deal A lot of times even better than the discounted physical copy. But we are there yet with consoles. And as long as they have locked digital storefronts where they make all of the money we will never have fair and competitive digital prices. Which means those physical copies will be what people seek out. Especially when they can actually sell those copies and make money back. Unfortunately we can't sell a digital code of a game once we used or redeemed it. Maybe in a perfect world that would be possible. I just wish when they did put out a physical release they cared enough about making it complete and fully functional. Digital games should be cheaper than the physicals. I agree with 95% of your video. There does seem like supply and "projected" demand is such a strictly monitored thing with the majority publisher now. Sadly with physical media being pushed less and less is because of lower physical sales aren't as strong now digital is winning over more and more consumers. A lot of them don't realise our side of it or understand how important physical is to the market. It's a hobby at the end of the day. Reprints can be done, however it's less and less feasible when they see less and less returns on a physical purchase verses the digital. For the most part, at least the majority of modern games aren't good anyway! So I've been mostly just picking up things a week or so after release even if i don't start them for a bit. I'm even less incentivised with newer consoles as effectively they're a disguised digital copy anyway, especially PS and Xbox.

@@bigcheese6417 Yeah and that's how social media and the entertainment industry has ruined future generations.. kids now are growing up with cell phones and tablets They know they can just watch a movie or a show through a streaming service They can click a button and download a game They didn't grow up in the time where they had to go to a movie theater and pay for a ticket to watch a movie or go to the store and physically buy a game to have it They have become so desensitized and spoiled by modern conveniences that they have no real attachment to anything. My 5-year-old niece gets spoiled on birthday and Christmas every year with tons of toys and goodies she cares about none of them All she wants to do is sit on her tablet and consume KZbin video after KZbin. Video Game Collecting is a spectrum. On one end is the pure gamer that only cares about playing video games, and the other end are people that never play video games and it’s a pure collection hobby. Neither side and anywhere in between is wrong. The pure gamer end needs to recognize that holding and growing value is important to a large % of the current market because the hobby has grown beyond playing the games themselves. Honestly if just playing the game is the goal just get a PC and emulate. While I agree companies can reprint modern games it’s not in their best interest. The rarer, sought after, talked about, and valuable your physical games are that’s free marketing for them. If you want something just buy it regardless of price if you can and want to afford it.

Well Nintendo is currently the only console that has true exclusives and the only place you can play those games. Whereas PlayStation and Microsoft have given up pretty much exclusives. You can get them on PC people that would have once bought a PlayStation or Xbox system are no longer buying it because those games are on PC. So the market for those who buy those consoles has shrunken. A lot of people will just wait for the inevitable PC version. But besides that cartridges are more expensive to manufacture than Blu-ray disc. Luray disc has been around for quite a while now. But these Nintendo switch cartridges are customized and unique a cartridge format that isn't used for any other device on the market. So because of that It makes it more expensive. If the switch cartridges were used for music and movies it would be a different thing.
