I love how Stephen starts with Richard Dawkins' definition of Meme (he's the one who actually invented them hilariously enough) then works his way down to what most people know it to mean nowadays lol. I've always wanted to say this long winded thing I'm about to but I must preface by saying I am not an anglophile but I don't like anything to speak of from my own country so I'm a big UK entertainment fan, period pieces being my choice 99.99% of the time. So, I was a little disappointed they had a regular American on Downton. UNTIL I got to know the character Miss McGovern plays. She's so perfect, I love her. But I can't think of another American whom I'd really like for this part, as many good actresses as there are here. McGovern has a sort of sweetness about her. Real or not, it comes across great on screen and she's SO not full of herself. AND, as an added bonus, not recommended, she's stunning.

I wish they had let Elizabeth McGovern keep more of her American accent in Downton. I get that she was 'American Money' who had lived amongst the Engish aristocracy. I just feel that her accent in Downton was alwas a little jarring and never quite right. It's the only real 'flaw' I've found in the show.

@@HungryHillSarah He does nothing of the sort. Only when Tom starts as land agent do we see or hear anything of the actual workings of the DA manorial tenant system. Direct discussions of the tenant system are very rare, e.g., Anthony Foyle comes in with some discussion of actual agriculture production. It's the first time that we ever hear about the manorial system of ag in the U.K. Tim Drewe getting his ancestral seat back. Also, Albert Mason keeping his tenant farm. That's it! Culture, the other thing peers are supposed to be about, is also thin on the ground. Maybe four Latin phrases get dropped, a reference to a John Keats poem (which Tom doesn't catch), the opera singer -- that's it. When they open their house to the public, the Crawleys are embarrassingly weak on their own history. No, I can very well imagine why Prince Charles is not a fan. Read his _Harmony: A New Way of Looking at Our World_ if you want to get a view into what a real royal thinks and believes. DA is fluff and just furthers stereotypes. Sure, it's fun, but it's completely fluff.

The show was incredible! The movie...whoever did the hideos makeup and the awful lighting should never work in the industry again. The foundations looked like they were caked on with a trowel and because of the lighting you can see how different the color of the foundation was and the actor's skin. It often varied between master shots and close-ups. What a ruin.
