I always thought the "three impossible dresses thing" meant that it was impossible for a fabric to match the natural changes of the sky, the moon and the sun: -The sky is ever changing, it's not always blue (sunset, dawn, stormy days, night skies, cloudy days...) -The Moon is constantly changing in her different phases and different colours like the Red moon or a lunar eclipse even. -Likewise, the Sun shifts its light during the day, it can appear golden or pearly or orange/red, and its light can shine differently... That's why I thought it would be impossible to make just a dress with each of these natural elements.

No. It's really as simple as what he's described: textile making in the original era of these stories. Context is important.

This impossibility as you describe is shown in the French film "Donkey Skin" with Delphine Seyreig and Catherine Deneuve. (I'm probably misspelling those names.) The dresses are displayed with startling special effects that stand up rather well to the test of time.

I have a request for a story, when I was little my teacher told a story called (sorry if the title is wrong but from what I remember) ‘Flowers an Salamanders’ what I remember about the story was about two girls. Their mother spoiled one while abused the other. The abused one goes to fetch water and comes across a old woman begging for food. The girl gives her what little food she has and fetches the old woman water. The old woman was so taken by her kindness she said ‘Every time you speak may a beautiful flower or precious stone fall from your lips’ the girl doesn’t believe her at first but when she goes home to tell her story boom flowers and jewels fall from her mouth. The mother sends the spoiled one to get the same treatment but as you can guess that doesn’t happen. She insults and belittles the old lady and when she talks; salamanders and toads come out. That’s what I can remember, granted I learned this story in kindergarten, if your for it why not do this story? I just did a google search and found the story is called “Diamonds and Toads” well as I stated before I couldn’t remember the title just the plot

Before the princess reached womanhood, the queen grew ill and died. The king mourned for one year as he sat by her tomb. Eventually he called upon a matchmaker, and told her that he wished to marry again. He took the anklet from his deceased wife and told the matchmaker he would marry the foot the anklet fit. The matchmaker searched throughout the kingdom but found no single girl whom the anklet would fit. Finally, the anklet slipped onto a princess' foot. This princess agreed to marry the king without knowing who she was to marry.[2] The night before the wedding, the princess asked the minister's daughter why so much talk filled the palace. The princess bribed her with her golden bangle, so the minister's daughter told her that the bridegroom was her father. The princess turned pale then sent everyone away and escaped. She first went to the tanner's home and gave him a handful of gold. She requested him to make her a suit of leather from head to toe; she left when it was completed. In the morning to king entered the bridal chamber to find that the princess had left. Soldiers at every gate asked if she had seen the king's daughter and she replied: My name is Juleidah for my coat of skins My eyes are weak, my sight is dim My ears are deaf, I cannot hear I care for no one far or near Juleidah ran until she collapsed. She passed out and a slave girl noticed her. The slave girl called upon her queen to show her the great pile of leather outside of her palace. They asked her who she was and the princess said her refrain once more. She was invited to join the servants and slaves. The queen's son noticed her and wanted to ask her hand in marriage. He prince asked Juleidah where she was from and she replied that she was from the land of the paddles and the ladles so the prince decided to travel there. Without the prince noticing, Juleidah slipped his ring off his hand. At the palace, Juleidah wanted to help the cook but the cook was reluctant. Eventually she was given a piece of dough to shape and she placed the prince's ring inside of it. For the prince's trek, he was given the bread holding the ring. Once he discovered it he ordered everyone to turn back. The two wed shortly after. The king put the matchmaker in chains. He searched from city to city until he reached the city where Juleidah resided. When the king reached the palace, Juleidah invited them in. She gave them food and a place to stay. Juleidah revealed to her father that she was his daughter. After it was revealed that Juleidah was the princess, the matchmaker was thrown into a ravine. The king gifted Juleidah and the prince, half of the kingdom and they lived happily ever after.[3]

I would love to see more messed up origins of Japanese mythologies and Japanese urban legends because some of them are really messed up and tragic but are very intriguing. Also Donkeyskin's story sounds a lot like the real story of St Dymphna (patron saint of mental illness and incest victims). The difference between the two is that while Donkeyskin got a happy ending, Dymphna didn't.

Deerskin has been one of my two favorite books for two decades. I wouldn’t call it a snuff film fairytale, lol, but it certainly is dark. In fact, my dog, a sighthound, is named Lissar after the heroine. Thanks for covering it!! I was very excited to see it!

@@JenniferRodriquez Plus I’m pretty sure someone has to die and stay dead for it to even begin to qualify 😂 The dark tragedy in it is that it IS realistic. These things DO happen, which is why we’ve been writing stories about them since we could write. I’ve also heard some people describe it as a horror book, which I take issue with as well. It’s a book where some horrible things happen, but it’s ABOUT overcoming and healing from these very realistic scenarios. If you stripped away the fantasy setting, it’s a story far, far too common. The main “fantasy” element, I’ve always felt, is that she’s believed at the end, sigh.

The princess was basically raped and impregnated while she was sleeping and when she woke up and searched for the father, the king's wife gets jealous, cooks the children and makes her husband eat them. And I think Sleeping Beauty was accused of being a witch and was sentenced to be burnt at the stake. European fairytales are just medieval torture porn

I somewhat knew this story as a kid by the title “Princess Furball”. More of a children’s version, she ran away because her father promised her hand to an ogre in exchange for wagons of silver. I think she hides the dresses in walnut shells. I loved the illustration.

I've never really deep-analyzed that story. I remember there was a film on it too and it didn't click at the time that it was a really bad story - I was too young. So for kids, there's the dresses, the prince, etc. For others, there's the immoral father that we all want to beat the s. out of, the condition of women that can be differently interpreted according to the time we're in. I think it's a very sad story and for nowadays if people read it, it might get them disgusted by it and maybe refrain from such behavior... Although I may be too wishful here.

Well, the thing is...fairy tales weren't originally meant for children. They were entertainment in fashionable salons, which is where Perrault's and other French fairy tales got their start. And even by the time of the Grimms, when they were labeled as "children's and household tales," these were stories from a harsher time where illness and early death were common, so the stories often reflected this much harsher world. Stories reflect their tellers and the times they're told in, after all.

They called this story sapsorrow in the Storyteller by Jim Henson Productions, they didn't have donkeyskin they had Feathers & Fur I guess. Then there was the Grimm's Fairy Tale classics by Sabon that had one that was called the coat with many colors which was kind of dark but it was good.

I read a more ‘kid-friendly’ version of DonkeySkin at like 7, I can’t remember the name of it - where, instead of it being her dad who wanted to marry her, he wanted to make some marriage alliance with an older neighbouring king- & she asks for various unusually made gowns, she gets all of them, & is kind of despairing- then asks for a cloak made from every kind of fur- & uses that to sneak out (with her fancy dresses- hidden in a case shaped like a golden walnut shell). She gets work at the kitchens of yet another neighbouring king- & learns he’s to throw a succession of balls for the noble maidens of the land, to find his bride. She goes to the ball, they dance, he’s attracted, blah, blah, blah. She leaves a short time later. Next day, she drops an earring in his food. There’s another ball- lather, rinse, repeat with another dress. His attraction has apparently increased, but she still returns to ‘that peasant life’... Next day, same deal. The other earring, this time. Third & final ball- she pulls out the finest of the dresses- & this third night, he’s apparently madly in love with her- yet she still goes back to the kitchens. Next day, the king goes to the kitchens, & sees her about to drop a ring into his meal- he proposes on the spot... I was only 12 when I read the **real** & uncensored version- I gotta say, I prefer the kid-friendly version of this tale...
