She made a great film. I hope she keeps up making the kind of films she wants to make, because The Love Witch truly is a very promising piece of work.

I'm a big big fan of Jacques Demy, he's probably the last one of this true magic cinema. I happened to have seen “The Love Witch” two weeks ago, which is a rare thing for me because I haven't followed today's cinema for years. No wonder I found it so sweet and nostalgia. Yeah, this is the stuff I love!

When I was very young, like 4 years old, I always chose to rent the Donkey Skin movie and could watch it several times in a day. I was a big fan of the pretty dresses. I rewatched it a few years ago, with very little memory of anything but the dresses, and that was a trip hahaha! Definitively a very 70s movie. But also, such a great visual inspiration. I'm kinda mad at myself that I didn't get the visual reference of the wedding scene! of The Love Witch I gotta watch more from both Anna Biller and Jacques Demy.

She’s hypersensitive to misogyny in films and yet makes a film about a female character who essentially JUSTIFIES misogyny. Oh, the irony…
@johnyzero20007 жыл бұрын
Male gaze? I think that severely limits your selection of movies. The male gaze is not a bad thing there are many directors who love women and show them in the most flattering light. A big chunk of Ingmar Bergman's films feature women in all the leads and he gave those actresses the best roles of their careers. Martin Scorsese has a string of actresses that have blossomed under his direction.

I think by "male gaze movies" she means films which are made under the assumption that they are for male consumption and are shot in a way that pleases men primarily. Not necessarily just all movies made by men. Jaques Demy is a man, after all
@ChristinaAndJuli6 жыл бұрын
The male gaze theory pinpoints the sexual objectification of women in films, devaluing their worth. Films that morph the image of women to satisfy men (the main audience). Ofcourse this is a very short description, but I hope it helps you understand about the theory a little bit.

She inspires me so much. I didn't know she loved Peau d'âne so much, it's also a movie I have seen recently. I know what she means about visual pleasure for women. Both Love Witch and Peau d'âne seem to have such a complete understanding of what that means and how to accomplish it. I hope she knows all her passion and hard work just for me to have 90 minutes of fantasy, is so appreciated and NEEDED

"Male Gace Movies" Ugh. And then she crams as much nakedness as she can into "The Love Witch", but it's totaly different because she's a woman
@jasonmarcel48237 жыл бұрын
I think you're confusing the FACT of nudity with the ATTITUDE the movie takes of the nudity. When she undresses for the college prof, it isn't meant to titillate us. It's more about the notion of what she thinks she's SUPPOSED to do to attract a man. She's not doing it because she actually feels sexy. The inner conflict is there the whole time. I think my favorite moments are the ones where she turns all this stuff on its head, like when she literally can't stand to be in the bedroom with the whiny, needy college professor, calling him a pussy from the living room couch where she's taken refuge of him. That sequence also gets inside the contradictions even within feminist notions that men should free themselves from the prison that says to show emotion is "weak". After all, when college professor does, it's annoying af to her.
