If little bo peep did have a secret meaning, i bet it would be something like this: A little girl plays a game where she pretends to shepherd her father's sheep. While playing she gets too tired to keep up so lies down for an afternoon nap in the field. When she wakes up the sheep are back but there tails have been docked (this is a legit thing we do to sheep for health reasons) but being young she doesn't fully understand. She does find the docked tails and, still playing her game, wants to be a good shepherd, so she tries to fix their tails.

Holy heck I had no idea sheep had long tails! I thought they were naturally bobbed... 😯
@westzed23
@westzed23 2 жыл бұрын
@@fluuufffffy1514 Only some sheep have bobbed tails.There is disease caused by flies that land on dirty areas of sheep. To keep the backside cleaner some are docked so their tails don't spread the dung around. Some sheep that live in high pastures are not docked to help keep their backsides warmer. Shepherds have to check the sheep regularly to make sure they haven't picked up fly strike, the disease. I only know of this in N. Europe and N. America, I don't know how widespread it is. 🐏🐑🙂

Elizabeth did have a cousin Mary who was a queen, of Scotland, and she did have an intense relationship with her because she was a contender for the English throne as well. She was a devout Catholic, so, many English Catholics were praying for her to take the throne. Elizabeth may be regarded as playing Bo-peep because she refused to meet, speak, or write to Mary. Mary could be considered to have lost her sheep because Scotland revolted and drove her out of the country. She dreamed of getting her sheep (I.E. Scotland) back by forming a military alliance with Elizabeth, but Elizabeth would have none of it and threw into a fancy prison for years then executed her on very suspicious charges. lesson: If you twist history hard enough, you can make any fairy tale fit in somewhere. You could just as easily make George III into Bo peep. He looked the other way when his 13 sheep (the colonies) asked for their rights, so he lost them. His Canadian colonies returned to him willingly, but he vainly spent the rest of his life trying to tack the missing parts of his empire back on without success and eventually lost his mind.
@okgibberish6771

Or you could say that Queen Mary whose portrait was shown had lost her sheep when, after her brother Edward VI there was an attempt to put her cousin Jane Grey the twelve days Queen on the throne instead of her but Mary rallied her supporters & took back the throne. The lost tails could refer to Mary being raised a Catholic & her father basically creating a religion to get rid of her mother. Mary wanted the country to convert back to Catholicism hence lost faith = lost tails & Mary was trying to convert them back. I don’t believe it but it sounds plausible… ish.
@JonSolo

CORRECTION: Apparently I used the wrong portrait of Queen Mary when discussing her feud with Queen Elizabeth. The Mary shown in the thumbnail and earlier in the video, the Queen of Scots, is the correct one. Thanks for the heads up! I’ve learned a valuable lesson. I’m going to use this mistake as a sign that I need to take a break from discussing the royal family for the time being. Not only do I find them incredibly boring, but my lack of interest in those inbred pompous dickheads’ lives is clearly affecting my ability to accurately research. It’s only a small mistake and my counter-arguments to the theory still completely hold up, but I’ll take any excuse to avoid having to think about them.

i grew up in a rural part of britain in the 80s. we were told that this was a list of hints and tips for young shepherdess. she wasn't watching the sheep (hence she's bo-peep) and she lost them. if your sheep wander off they will usually return home on their own by evening, they are creatures of habit, hence "leave them alone and they'll come home" the part about the tails being cut off is a reference to a common agricultural practice of docking lambs tails by constriction. a very tight rubber band is put on the tail of the newborn lamb (way back when, this was done with string) as the lamb grows the tail becomes constricted and drops off. not going to touch the ethics of this, it's done to help the adult sheep avoid nerfs leading to maggots. yes, nerf as in "scruffy looking nerfherder" means a poop-dreadlock on a sheep.

Right, as a person who lives near a LOT of sheep, here's my theory. When lambs are little they have long tails and are very friendly. As they get older, farmers will dock the tails (and testicles, sorry!). A child's sense of time is so skewed that it would seem that her pet lambs mysteriously disappeared, and then came back with various appendages missing. She probably would have been asleep as farmers get up really early to get on with their business. But that's Just A Theory A Sheep Theory

I don't think that every story, fable or rhyme has to have an underlining theory (using the rhymes as codes to talk about royalty for example). Sometimes, a story is just a story, or has a moral included to make the story more effective to the audience. Suffice to say, this one appeared to be more straightforward. Thank you for taking the time to research these stories, fables and rhymes!

Neat little note in relation of Bo-Peep to Alice Causton locked in the pillery: In the 1934, Laurel & Hardy film, "March of the Wooden Soldiers," there is a scene depicted in which Tom Thumb sings a song to Little Bo-Peep during one of Bo-Peep's episodes of losing her sheep. While singing the song, Tom Thumb playfully locks Bo-Peep's legs into the village stocks and doesn't release her until the end of the song, at which point many of the other citizens of Toyland (all various characters from different nursery rhymes) have encircled the couple and return Bo-Peep's lost sheep, that they had found, back to the relieved shepherdess.

I agree that sometimes a children’s story should be just that, a children’s story. It’s cool to think about hidden codes to plot against the Queen hidden in nursery rhymes, but unfortunately, real life doesn’t work like that. And I’m sure Bob the peasant down the road is too worried about his 3 children dying of smallpox to have time to start a revolution.

I find merit to your approach. We often over complicate the origin or stories. Most people couldn't read, no TV, or Netflix, I'm sure many fables and stories were made up and crafted as a means of entertainment and moral instruction, getting passed down with variations from whoever is telling it.

I feel like some people who analyze nursery rhymes forget this or atleast don't take this into consideration. Most are hundreds of years old just to when they were finally written down. Back when the stories were originally created; they didn't have TV or internet or phones or radios. Their entertainment came from stories told by family or village elders. Over time the stories would spread out as slowly people travelled more and they would change for various reasons before being written down in the various areas they had spread to.

I do think these verses were written to make sense in some form. Falling asleep, losing sheep...okay we can all by that BUT someone amputating just lamb's tails while leaving the chops... what is the purpose here..and then to make sure we know you can't just take this verse straight up... She miraculously has the gift to re-attach and re-animate the tails.Cause yeah, that happens all the time in my neighborhood.

Interesting I do have a one word difference to what you said. I know the last line of the first verse to be "leave them alone and they come home, *wagging* their tails behind them". It is a small difference but surprised that you didn't find it as a variation. It also makes more sense when later in the rhyme they lose their tails.

I always thought it was about children working. Sheep loose their tails after docking, them she finds catkins and mistakes them for her sheep’s tail.

Ring Around the Rosie is about the plague, smallpox or one of those illnesses I can't remember the name of from several centuries back. Can't recall the explanation for the words either.

Ring a round a rosie refers to the sores from bubonic plague, the posies that were flowers people carried around hoping to keep them from catching the plague, ashes were from the burning corpses, and all fall down means we drop dead. People never talked about things, and dealt with everything through avoidance and denial, and so children children were left to their own devices to cope however they could through play.

I have a story for you, "The Bremen Town Musicans." Some say that it's the ancestor & inspiration for famous/infamous musical animatronic animals (Chuck E. Cheese's, The Banana Splits, Show Biz Pizza, Five Nights at Freddy's, Willy's Wonderland, ect.). Not exactly messed up, aside from talks of animal cruelty & minor violence the animals thrust upon the robbers. Moral of that story: "It's never too late to find a silver lining or second chance in life" or "being old doesn't mean you're useless."

In Western Europe, rhyming satire has been used to lampoon those in power since the Druids studied and performed it during the Iron Age. Facility in satire was one measure of the Druid's effectiveness in their social role. The measure of a wise and good leader leader in those days rested upon whether the leader took such treatment in stride. The Druids themselves were inviolate. Ridicule of the powerful has likely been considered an essential element and practice of a healthy society since long before that era.

Mary, Mary Quite Contrary is a poem that I believe was also about Mary Tudor's persecution of the non Roman Catholics.

I always thought that it was somehow connected to the rhyme “Mary, Mary, quite contrary, how does your garden grow?” which I have been told was related to Mary Queen of Scots and her inability to produce children (as she had numerous miscarriages throughout her life and if I’m not mistaken this also led to her cause of death)

I wonder if “Gammer” is a nickname for grandma. I don’t remember ever hearing Little Bo Peep set to music. Those incredibly long and detailed subtitles probably served as a combination what today would today be ad campaign and boom jacket blurb.

As alternate tunes go, this happens a lot. A friend of mine told me that all of Elizabeth Barret Browning's poetry can be sung to "Yellow Rose of Texas." 😳 It really puts a kink in the romantic vibe of "How Do I Love Thee? Let Me Count the Ways" or the somber, "Because I Could Not Stop for Death He Kindly stopped for Me."
