Just gotta to be confidence and just go do it. I know it take lots of guts and confidence to do all these but I had the same problems with my life and now everything changed. I personally talk to Jose for lots of ice breakers and other things to talk to group of people and meeting new people. It was very helpful. Anyway, if you want to talk to your crush or make a friend with that cute or just be friend with whoever you want, all you have to do is go up to them and start talking. Don't give a damn about what other people think and make sure when you meet a new person, you know how to act cool , when I say act cool I meant be confidence of course and have good eye-contact but don't be creepy and smile please, its free too. Its gonna be freaking weird and awkward when you meet new person even after 10000000000 tries so keep going but don't give up and relax and take baby steps. haha that's true, going up and saying that will come off awkward as hell. I think the way you work into conversations like that is to tie the question into a story and reason for asking. Using your color question as an example, you might want to say "hey lemme get your quick opinion on something. I'm trying to pick out a new phone case but I'm not sure what color to get for it. What's your favorite color, which one would you choose?". Introducing the question like that gives your approach a back story, opens the door for her to share her opinions, removes the weirdness of the question and gives you a chance to learn a little more about her.

I walk with my crush everyday after we have orchestra, and conversations are typically smooth and enjoyable. The problem is, this the only time I get to talk to her.
