It's not the blooms for me (although they are an added bonus). It's most definitely the leaves. Their thickness, texture, markings and subtle colouring. And the vines!

I have 400 different types of hoyas in my greenhouse... In Iran, for $1000, you can buy 150 varieties of hoyas, from common to collectible, for example, the price of a ten-leafed Hoya New Guinea Ghost plant in Iran is $15.

Brilliant! Thank you. I inherited a 70 year old Hoya and a cutting from her is now 23 years old. She is huge, like a bass viol, and she currently has about 10 new tendrils of five feet or so, gearing up for a grand spring, methinks. I made the mistake everyone makes with these plants - I found out that there is a world of Hoyas. Living in a small bachelor pad really is not conducive to collecting. Nine now. It'll be a trellis nightmare soon...💐🥳

I think why Hoyas are so popular is flowers, but also the foliage. So Hoyas have such beautiful foliage. Many are also forgiving and that also makes them popular. I love Hoyas as well.

As the saying goes”There is a fine line between love and hate.” I think most people don’t like like Hoyas because they don’t understand their growing needs. That and the slow growing rate is tough if you aren’t a patient person. They will respond to love and patience. That’s where the satisfaction comes from. Then you become a bonafide Hoya Head!

I also have my Australis Lisa trellised and the flowers and scent are just gorgeous ☺️ and finally I have the Gunung Gading and the sunlight has sun stressed it into an array of gorgeous colours. They are very addictive 😀 last count I had over 40 🤫

When I first got into plants I thought the Hoyas are 'meh' I wanted the compacta Hindu rope in both green and var but that was the only one that really drew me in. I tried to get excited about Hoyas simply because my biggest fear about house plants is my cats eating them. Hoyas being pet friendly and a blooming plant made me want to give them a try. I got a larger hanging basket of a Crimson/Krimson Queen and I watched how quickly it vined and grew and I was hooked! I loved that every leaf never really looked the same. Now I'm upward of close to 30 varieties and I've learned to appreciate the minor differences in the varieties. My Wayettii Var is also a slow grower but the Kentiana Var is faster yet they look so similar. Both grown in the same soil side by side in my cabinet both originally almost identical in size. My Wayettii likes to drop a leaves if I'm too light on the watering, yet will turn any touching soil to mush if I'm too heavy, it's been very finicky despite being in terracotta. The Kentiana Var is going wild and thrives in any watering conditions! It's vining and lush and full, never complains.

I’ve had Hoyas since the 1980s. When I saw my first plant, a plain green carnosa in bloom, I fell in love. It wasn’t just the flowers, it was everything about the plant - the vines, the scent of the flowers, the thick leaves. I got a cutting from that plant and still have it today. I had up to 80 at some point, but most I do not have anymore. They don’t really age well, cute fresh little plants grow into not so cute huge monsters that require a lot of space and light….I hate to say this, but they become burdens.

For me, it’s the ease of care. I have around 50 varieties that don’t need a tent or cabinet, and about 12 of them bloomed this year. I have less trouble with Hoya and they look better than just about any other house plant in my home/climate.

I inherited my mother's 60+ year old Hoya Carnosa. As far as I remember, it has only bloomed once or maybe twice. I have her in a west facing window and she is doing well. I have had her 3 months. I see a few new leaves forming. I am DYING to find some peduncles, but so far, just leaves. Since I got her, I have acquired a Krimson Princess, a Pulicaylix Hawaiian Purple and a small Compacta. I think I have developed an addiction!

My favorite part about Hoyas is honestly how easy care they are. Their water requirements are exactly what I give to my plants so they are always usually happy with the me. The variety is outstanding as well. Not only the variety of leaves and textures but also the ways they can grow, trellis, trailing, hanging, climbing, mounted, you name it. Another thing, which some people might think I’m crazy for saying, is their energy. In my experience Hoyas tend to have a cutesy, quirky, happy energy about them. So once you get one with that type of energy how can you not be any more of it around when they have so many options they offer haha

I fell in love with Hoya's once I discovered they are available in endless varieties outside of what is commonly find in nurseries. I was intimidated by them at first because they seem so elegant to me and I thought I would kill them. However, once I researched and discovered they are similar to succulents, I knew I could take care of them. I've been collecting them for almost two years and I have around 20. They are unique, beautiful and easy care plants.

Hello! I'm a Foliage lover. Hoyas leaves are so unique. If I get one flower to bloom fine but, I don't want sap and ants either! I love your update. Your hoyas are healthy and beautiful. I want that undulata! The one thing fascinating is one Hoya grower will swear by orchid mix, another soil, another leca and another moss. I've tried them all including fluval stratum and find leca to work best because it doesn't attract mealy bugs, fungus gnats or root rot. So out of 60 (still counting) 98% in leca. Thanks for sharing! For me is that they stay relatively small :))) You don't need half a room to have mature blooming beautiful hoya. Aroids are tough in that sense. Also they don't mind trailing, which is another space-saving feature. Try trailing any monstera, runners for days :)

I love growth update videos like this 🥹I just started collecting houseplants 3 months ago and I already own more than 20 hoyas lol they’re so addictive. None of them are blooming rn, but the foliage is what gets me. I LOVE touching them! They have all kinds of stuff textures even fuzzy ones! Btw normally when sellers put a color at the end of the hoya name, it refers to the colour of their flowers. However, a lot of asian export sellers sell “red” versions of hoyas to get more money, it’s just the sun stressed version of their green plants.

I'm wondering with your undulata red if you let the new little leaf grow out and then snip that off with the vine, you may be able to propagate and trellis that part of the plant successfully and keep the compact growth of the mother plant as well. And if you don't end up liking the trellised one's growth pattern at some point you could sell/swap it.

I just found your channel last night and am trying to catch up with at least a few of the episodes. However, I am continuously distracted by the repeated mention of tendril/s. Hoyas don't have tendrils. Many have twining stems and that is what the plants use to push themselves into the canopy. Tendrils are separate organs that emanate from the stems, often coiled or grappling. 6:02 that depends on the species involved. Some species, particularly from higher elevations with higher annual rainfall require more water than those from low altitudes with long dry periods. 8:10 species names are not capitalized. Thus 'Hoya burtoniae'.

I love my hoyas, they’re some of my favorite plants. I really love the tiny cute ones like Mathilde and curtsii. 🥰 Ngl, I kinda struggled with some of them, I think just due to their humidity needs. They may not need much water, but some of them don’t like it when the air is too dry. So the last 3 cuttings I’ve gotten I’ve just left in water (adding food now and then). I’ve found that hoyas really flourish this way for me! Although I’m very jealous of your Burtonaie’s growth!! My cutting did nothing for like 6 months and now it’s finally giving me some actual new leaves lol.

OH and hearing that a variegated compacta went for $6000 had my jaw dropping!! 😱 But I also kinda get it, that’s been another extremely slow grower for me. I have a feeling it’s gonna be YEARS before I even think about propping that guy. 😂

The Wilbur Graves is my one and only plant splurge. Make sure you get the Russia if you get one. The China looks different. I'm dying to get a Super Silver Krohniana. I love the silvery blue hoyas too!! I'd love to see a video on your Hoya wishlist plants!

Wow the hoya undulata is a tough grower!!! Can you share what you did? Do you let it dry all the way out? What contains is it in? I’m so excited to hear back from you ❤❤❤❤

Nice collection. Liked the fact pop ups. I guess I’m you a couple years ago, I don’t get the Hoya love. Just don’t do it for me, but then I’m alocasia, aroid and carnivorous obsessed.

Hello Claire. Possibly the reason your Hoya sarawak isn't growing it could possibly have false spider mites. You really need a micro scope to see them there so small. Check out Betsy Begonia channel she does a great talk on the subject.

Answering your question from the beggining of the vid, Im on a stage of hoya haters and this video disnt change my mind. BUT im aware it might change because I was hatet of alocasias and now I love them all and frydek and micholitziana are my favourites 🍃 but in general I love them all 😍

One more thing, Claire, would you consider a “craft” video on how you make your beautiful pots and hangers? They are so pretty. Inspirational. 🪴🪴🪴
